The Shamash across Generations: A Tribute to Leonard Cohen

“Passing through, passing through. Sometimes happy, sometimes blue, Glad

that I ran into you. Tell the people that you saw me passing through.”

These lyrics are by Leonard Cohen who passed away on November 7, at the age of 82.

In this month of Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights, I call Leonard Cohen our Shamash because too many of his generation and even to this day, his words and his humanity are to us a mixture of darkness and light. He was truly a poet and bard in his “yiddishe neshama.” He inspired countless performers and fans as his profound lyrics and soulful melodies touched our hearts and opened our minds.

His signature anthem, “Hallelujah,” has recently joined the pantheon of melodies for Lecha Dodi on Friday night and has become a regular at our MJCBY special musical Shabbat services in the park and throughout the year.

Leonard grew up in the heavily Jewish Westmount section of Montreal in a prominent orthodox family. His grandfather was a talmudic scholar in Lithuania and on display in Congregation Shaar Hashomayim, his family’s synagogue, is a Menorah dedicated to his grandparents. He was observant throughout his life, even as he dabbled in other avenues of spirituality (e.g. Zen Buddhism). His debut album, “Song of Leonard Cohen,” came out in 1967 when he was 33 years old. Always shy as a performer, Judy Collins made his haunting ballad, “Suzanne,” a worldwide success.

His Judaism definitely influenced and touched his works. In Hallelujah, he incorporates the bittersweet tale of David and Bathsheba and the ends words are unmistakably – Leonard Cohen.

“I did my best, it wasn’t much. I couldn’t feel, so I tried to touch. I’ve told the truth, I didn’t come to fool you. And even though it all went wrong I’ll stand before the Lord of Song. With nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah.”

Abraham Joshua Heschel writes in his God in Search of Man:

“There are those who sense the ultimate question in moments of wonder, in moments of joy; there are those who sense the ultimate question in moments of horror, in moments of despair. It is both the grandeur and the misery of living that makes one sensitive to the ultimate question. Indeed, our misery is as great as our grandeur.”

These words by Heschel epitomizes this humble yet brilliant

man, Leonard Ha Kohen. From his son at his funeral, “With only immediate family and a few lifelong friends present, he was lowered into the ground in an unadorned pine box, next to his mother and father. Exactly as he’d asked.”

In his 1988 album “I’m Your Man,” he writes his own eulogy with the final words:

“You’ll be hearing from me baby, long after I’m gone. I’ll be speaking to you sweetly from a window in the Tower of Song.”

In the words of this immortal 16th century bard and poet,William Shakespeare:

“Now cracks a noble heart. Good-night, sweet prince; And flights of angels sing thee to thy rest.”

Leonard, you will be remembered.

MOVIE NIGHT Sunday - December 11 - 7:00 pm

DOUGH

A lonely widower whose London bakery is on the verge of bankruptcy doesn’t have much joy in his life these days, other than his granddaughter. His wife is gone; his son has decided to become a lawyer and his only employee just quit.

Forced to find a new apprentice, Nat takes a chance on Ayyash, a 20-something from Darfur who’s secretly working for a local drug kingpin. When Ayyash accidentally drops some marijuana into the challah dough — and then reluctantly bakes it anyway — the customers show up in droves. Apparently, no one questions the resulting euphoria; everyone’s just hungry for the giggles.

An interesting discussion will follow the showing. As always, the movie, popcorn and drinks are free.

Dedication of the Gateway Totem Pole was held in front of Grow It Green Community Garden in collaboration with Morris Arts on Early Street in Morristown. Synagogue News

MJCBY Women took over the synagogue kitchen Wednesday morning, 11/16, to make and “take” challah, performing one of the 613 commandments that is particularly associated with women. After learning how to braid 4,5, and even 6 strands into straight and circular Challahs, the women shared stories and customs of Challah baking from their families.

The bakers ranged in age from 6 months old (in arms) to grandmothers, all of whom thoroughly enjoyed themselves and hope to bake together again soon.

Youth News USY

Our USY chapter continues to grow and evolve, and we were really busy in November with two chapter

events and Hagalil USY’s Fall Kinnus. All who attended had a wonderful time!

We are looking forward to a delicious night on December 11 at our Iron Chef event. Focusing on foods traditionally consumed on Hanukkah, USYers will create a three course meal utilizing a special ingredient in each of them. Keep an eye out for the January - June calendar that will be out at the end of the month.

If you have a 9th-11th grader who is looking for a leader-ship opportunity, please reach out to our USY Advisor, Aly Greenstein, at [email protected]. USY has many leadership positions that are a great way for high school students to learn and grow.

We hope that all 9th-12th graders will join us on Decem-ber 11 from 6:30-8:00 at MJCBY.

SABABAH

Our third, fourth and fifth graders met after Religious school for a Fall Fest, their second Sababah event! Thanksgiving themed events included ‘Pin the Beak on the Turkey’ and “Sweet Potato Relay.” We also played ping pong cups and made mesmerizing

calming tubes with glitter glue and glitter (A LOT of glitter!). We chatted, collaborated and laughed a lot!! Our kosher turkey sand-wiches, apples, applesauce, fresh veggies and apple cider were yummy! Everyone left smiling and ready for Thanksgiving!

Don’t let your third, fourth or fifth grader miss out on our next event....CUPCAKE WARS!! January 29, 2017!! Evite to follow!

KADIMA

Our Kadima chapter continues to grow as we have more events and more Kadimaniks attend! In November, we had a great time in

our Iron Chef competition. There were 20 ingredients displayed, and those gathered were asked to make three dishes: an appetizer, a main course, and a dessert, comprising of at least 18 of the ingredients throughout. The teams came up with some very imaginative ideas that tasted out of this world!

We look forward to our next event, Minute to Win It, happening on December 18, after Religious school. Please let our Kadima advisor, Dania Rothenberg, know if you can attend at [email protected]. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to reach out!

The Kadima Krew!

Hundreds of USYer’s at their opening dance!
