MJC Welcomes “Old Pro” as New Legal Director: Meet Kyla Motz If you have volunteered at the Milwaukee Justice Center at any time over the past four years, chances are you have met Kyla Motz. Kyla started as a volunteer at the MJC in the summer of 2012, following her first year at Marquette University Law School and, with a few exceptions, she has been with the MJC in some capacity since that time. Kyla served as an interim Legal Director in fall 2014 during leadership transition at the MJC. She began as the MJC Legal Director, overseeing the family forms assistance services, on August 1, 2016 following the departure of former Legal Director, Angela Cunningham, to the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office. “I don’t remember exactly why I began volunteering at the MJC. I know I was looking for an opportunity to get legal experience and had an interest in family law, so the MJC was a fit with my professional interests,” Kyla said. “I do remember, though, why I stayed. I love getting the opportunity to empower people to help themselves. Clients come to the MJC with problems, sometimes very complicated problems, and we work with them to find solutions. I love the feeling you get when a client leaves better off than when they came in.” Outside of the MJC, you might catch Kyla on the bowling lanes. “I’ve bowled a 300 before. Although, maybe you already know that since I’m fairly certain I used that in a Volunteer Spotlight back in the day,” Kyla said (she did, back in the Autumn 2014 edition of the MJC Quarterly). “I also see, or try to see, all of the Oscar-nominated movies in the theaters every year.” Welcome to the MJC team, Kyla! We are glad you are (still) here!

MJC Welcomes “Old Pro” as New Legal Director: Meet Kyla Motz

If you have volunteered at the Milwaukee Justice Center at any time over the past four years, chances are you have met Kyla Motz. Kyla started as a volunteer at the MJC in the summer of 2012, following her first year at Marquette University Law School and, with a few exceptions, she has been with the MJC in some capacity since that time. Kyla served as an interim Legal Director in fall 2014 during leadership transition at the MJC. as an attorney. In her free time, Aimee enjoys reading and spending time with her two dogs. For the full spotlight, visit the MVLC website.

Student Advisory Board Member Spotlight: JJ Moore Jason “JJ” Moore is currently a second-year law student at Marquette University Law School. PRAISE FOR VOLUNTEER ATTORNEY, JENNIFER BAUMLER “The meeting with Attorney Baumler was extremely informative and helpful. She was thorough in her responses to my

questions, explained things in a way I could understand easily and most importantly, she offered suggestions on where we could turn for further help. Finally, although it was a short meeting, I did not feel rushed and felt our questions were

completely addressed.” – MVLC Client at the Milwaukee Justice Center

Volunteer Spotlights

Beginning July 1, 2016, new court rules affect how some personal information should be filed with the circuit court. Some numbers are now considered “protected information” and should either be not included or redacted from documents filed with the court if they are not needed for the case. These include:

• Social security numbers • Employer and tax ID numbers • Financial account numbers • Driver’s license numbers • Passport numbers

If these numbers are needed, they should be submitted only on a special form entitled “Confidential Disclosure of Protected Information” (GF-241). If other information should be protected, a motion to seal the information may be filed using the Motion to Seal or Redact a Court Record (GF-246) along with the Confidential Disclosure of Information to be Sealed or Redacted (GF-245). Some types of information require the parties to inform the court of their existence using the Cover Sheet for Confidential Records (GF-244). These types of cases and documents include:

• Child pornography as evidence • Criminal competency determinations • Criminal mental disease reports • Family maintenance payment records • Public records for an in camera inspection • Treatment records of criminally committed individuals • Wiretaps and electronic interceptions • Insurance proceedings for judicial review • Medical incapacity of attorney petition • UCCJEA Petition where risk of harm is alleged • Party denied periods of physical placement • Records previously sealed by the court

For more information, please see Wis. Stat. sec. 801.18, 801.20 and 801.21 as well as the court website.

The Marquette Volunteer Legal Clinics are expanding the current basic estate planning program, Wills for Veterans. Starting this fall, the basic estate planning program will be rolled out to other MVLC locations to provide basic estate planning services to low income residents in Milwaukee. If you are interested in volunteering with this program, contact Katie Mertz at [email protected] to train and sign up for shifts this fall. No estate planning experience is required!
