This month we
celebrate Lag
B’Omer and I want to
share with you some
of the ways the holi-
day is celebrated in Israel.
Bonfires – This is currently the most
common custom of Lag B’Omer. Through-
out Israel great fires are lit. Young and old
gather around them, dancing and singing.
The tradition of lighting fires originated in
the Kabbalistic book Zohar (“Radiance”).
When Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai (Rashbi)
died, his house was filled with an intense,
unearthly light. This was credited to his
deep knowledge of the Torah and the dis-
covery of its deepest secrets, because the
Torah is likened to light, as written in
Proverbs 6:23: “For the commandment is a
candle and the Torah is the light.”
Celebrations at the tomb of Rabbi
Shimon bar Yochai – On the day of Lag
B’Omer, tens of thousands of people gather
at Rabbi Shimon’s tomb on Mount Meron.
A big bonfire is lit there. Campfire songs
are sung in honor of Lag B’Omer and in
memory of Rabbi Shimon. Music and danc-
ing continue throughout the night.
Archery – On Lag B’Omer, children go on
outings and play with bows and arrows.
This tradition is dedicated to the memory
of participants in the Bar Kochba revolt,
who fought bravely with their Roman op-
pressors for the freedom of Israel. In Kab-
balistic tradition a bow, “keshet,” is close-
ly linked to Rabbi Shimon. Keshet also
means rainbow, which became a symbol of
the reconciliation of man and G-d after the
Flood. The Almighty promised not to de-
stroy more people, no matter how they had
sinned, and showed them a sign—a rain-
bow. When a rainbow appears in the sky,
it means that people have behaved badly
and deserve severe punishment, but G-d
remembers His promise. The sages say that
during the life of Rabbi Shimon, a rainbow
never appeared, because his righteousness
was so great that it was enough to atone
for the sins of a generation.
“Halaka” (boys’ first haircut) – Also
known as “upsherin,” this custom originat-
ed with Rabbi Isaac ben Shlomo Luria, the
Kabbalist known as Ari, who lived in Safed.
Boys who are three years old receive their
first haircut on Lag B’Omer. The ceremony
may take place at the tomb of Rabbi Shi-
mon on Mount Meron. There is singing and
dancing, and guests are treated to wine
and biscuits.

On Tuesday, May
6 we celebrate
Yom Ha’atzmaut,
the rebirth of the
nation of Israel.
Below are excerpts (including all of the
signatories) from both the Declaration of
Independence, as read aloud by David Ben-
Gurion 66 years year ago, and the Decla-
ration of Independence, as composed pri-
marily by Thomas Jefferson in 1776. Both
documents are cherished by us as both Jews
and Americans and critical to understand-
ing why our nations must remain free and
independent. We are thankful for all of the
brave men who signed these documents at
the risk of their own lives so that we could
live to enjoy and prosper in free societies
formed by immigrants to each land.

On the 29th November 1947, the Unit-
ed Nations General Assembly passed a
resolution calling for the establishment of
a Jewish State in Eretz-Israel; the General
Assembly required the inhabitants of Eretz-
Israel to take such steps as were necessary
on their part for the implementation of that
resolution. This recognition by the United
Nations of the right of the Jewish people
to establish their State is irrevocable. This
right is the natural right of the Jewish peo-
ple to be masters of their own fate, like all
other nations, in their own sovereign State.
WE DECLARE that, with effect from the
moment of the termination of the Mandate
being tonight, the eve of Sabbath, the 6th
Iyar, 5708 (15th May, 1948), until the es-
tablishment of the elected, regular authori-
ties of the State in accordance with the
Constitution which shall be adopted by the
Elected Constituent Assembly not later than
the 1st October 1948, the People’s Council
shall act as a Provisional Council of State,
shall be the Provisional Government of the
Jewish State, to be called “Israel”.
THE STATE OF ISRAEL will be open for
Jewish immigration and for the Ingathering
of the Exiles; it will foster the development
of the country for the benefit of all its in-
habitants; it will be based on freedom, jus-
tice and peace as envisaged by the prophets
of Israel; it will ensure complete equality
of social and political rights to all its in-
habitants irrespective of religion, race or
sex; it will guarantee freedom of religion,
conscience, language, education and cul-
ture; it will safeguard the Holy Places of all
religions; and it will be faithful to the prin-
ciples of the Charter of the United Nations.
WE EXTEND our hand to all neighbouring
states and their peoples in an offer of peace
and good neighbourliness, and appeal to
them to establish bonds of cooperation
and mutual help with the sovereign Jewish
people settled in its own land. The State
of Israel is prepared to do its share in a
common effort for the advancement of the
entire Middle East.
WE APPEAL to the Jewish people through-
out the Diaspora to rally round the Jews of
Eretz-Israel in the tasks of immigration and
upbuilding and to stand by them in the
great struggle for the realization of the age-
old dream - the redemption of Israel.
PLACING OUR TRUST IN THE “ROCK OF IS-
RAEL,” WE AFFIX OUR SIGNATURES TO THIS
PROCLAMATION AT THIS SESSION OF THE
PROVISIONAL COUNCIL OF STATE, ON THE
SOIL OF THE HOMELAND, IN THE CITY OF
TEL-AVIV, ON THIS SABBATH EVE, THE 5TH
DAY OF IYAR, 5708 (14TH MAY,1948).

We hold these Truths to be self-evident,
that all Men are created equal, that they are
endowed by their Creator with certain un-
alienable Rights, that among these are Life,
Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness—That
to secure these rights, Governments are
instituted among Men, deriving their just

ity of the good People of these Colonies,
solemnly publish and declare, That these
United Colonies are, and of Right ought to
be Free and Independent States; that they
are Absolved from all Allegiance to the Brit-
ish Crown, and that all political connection
between them and the State of Great Brit-
ain, is and ought to be totally dissolved;
and that as Free and Independent States,
they have full Power to levy War, conclude
Peace, contract Alliances, establish Com-
merce, and to do all other Acts and Things

We are delighted to announce that
Rabbi Amy will be with us for a two-
part program entitled “Dynamic Changes
in the Jewish Community” beginning on
Thursday evening, May 1, at 7:30 pm.
At this time, Rabbi Amy will speak
about “Reflections on the Pew Study and
the Jewish Community.”
The second presentation will be on
Tuesday, May 20, at 7:30 pm, and Rabbi
Amy’s topic will be “Busy Lives, Changing
Lifestyles and Jewish Engagement in To-
day’s Families.”
Both sessions will be interactive with
an opening guided discussion led by Rabbi
Amy and then “a conversation” with the
participants. Her presentation will include
selections from Jewish and secular news-
papers and journals, along with selected
quotes from Jewish text to frame the voice
of Jewish values in the discussion. Par-
ticipants are urged to bring questions and
concerns!
Rabbi Small is rabbi and director of a
new organization, Deborah’s Palm Cen-
ter for Jewish Learning and Experiences,
based in Morristown. She was ordained
from the Reconstructionist Rabbinical Col-
lege in 1987 and served on the faculty and
administration from 1995 to 1998. She is
a member of its Board of Governors. She
is a senior rabbinic fellow of the Shalom
Hartman Instituted in Jerusalem, a fellow
of Rabbis Without Borders (CLAL) and a
Storahtelling Maven. She recently returned
from an eye-opening trip to Pakistan.

About a mission to Cuba?
About a trip to Europe geared for families with
Bar and Bat Mitzvah age children?
About an intergenerational trip to Israel?
We need to hear from you if any of these are of interest
to you. We will organize an itinerary once we know
there is interest.
The Cuba Mission may be planned for January or February
of 2015. It would be 8 days and the cost per person would
approximately be $2500 with 20 people, not including air
to and from Miami.
The trip to Europe might include stops in Munich, Amster-
dam, and Prague and last 10 days. We would visit certain
Holocaust related sites including Dachau and Anne Frank’s
house. We would tour historical local sites. This trip would
cost approximately $ 5500 per person including round trip
airfare, children staying in parents’ rooms will be less, based
on 25 participants. This might take place in summer of
2015 or 2016.
An intergenerational trip to Israel could take place in late
December 2015, or summer of 2015 or 2016 depending on
interest. This would be a 10-day trip with 8 days in Israel.
Cost would be approximately $5500 per person, including
round trip airfare, children staying in parents’ rooms will be
less, based on 25 participants.

Yana and Roman Goldberg invite the
congregation to worship with us on
May 3, when our son David Meron is called
to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah.
David is a seventh-grade student at
Randolph Middle School. He is passionate
about soccer and has been playing for the
Randolph Bulls for the past three years. His
other passion is music, and he enjoys be-
ing a part of Randolph Middle School Jazz
Band as a first tenor sax.
For his mitzvah project, David chose
to volunteer at the Jewish Relief Agency
of MetroWest, where he has been helping
to pack and deliver kosher food to elderly
Russian immigrants in Newark. This has
been a rich and fulfilling experience for Da-
vid, because as a first-generation American
he had a chance to actively help and see
first hand where his parents and grandpar-
ents started out their life as immigrants
in the United States. David has decided to
continue volunteering at the Jewish Relief
Agency after his Bar Mitzvah.
David is grateful to share this day with
his parents, his younger brother Elan,
grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins,
who are a very special part of his life.

May 10
Rebecca and Mitchell Gold, along with
proud grandparents, Deborah and Philip
Brody, joyfully invite the congregation to
celebrate with them when their son, Jona-
than Asher, is called to the Torah as a Bar
Mitzvah on May 10. Jonathan, a seventh
grader at Briarcliff Middle School in Moun-
tain Lakes, loves music day and night! He
is an avid drummer, singer and guitarist.
Jonathan performs frequently with School
of Rock in Chatham, where he has been
studying and rehearsing all types of clas-
sic rock since he was 9. He most recently
performed at the Highline Ballroom in New
York City and is heading to Chicago in June
to compete with his bandmates against 60
other Schools of Rock.
Jonathan loves hockey and, like his Dad
(a Chicago lad) is an avid Blackhawks fan.
He and his older brother, Jamie, spend
many hours playing Magic, watching sa-
tirical videos and, of course, fighting (in
a loving and brotherly way). They also
continue to be in touch with their Israeli
brother, Amitai Edri, the Rishon from Fed-
eration who lived with us in 2010. We cel-
ebrated with him and his parents in Israel,
where Jonathan led a morning service and
read Torah on Masada this past December.
Jonathan has been helping out with spe-
cial needs children at the Friendship Circle
and Ally’s Camp since he was in third grade
and became an official Friendship volun-
teer many months before his Bar Mitzvah!
He spends Monday afternoons on the bas-
ketball court shadowing the kids. It’s as
much fun for him as it is for them, and
he has a strong commitment to continu-
ing this mitzvah for years to come. He also
hopes to volunteer his time on Sundays for
the Friendship Circle music program.
Jonathan plans to attend the ALP pro-
gram at MJCBY with Rabbi Shmule Green
and Rabbi Nesson, as well as be an active
participant with the Minyonaires.
We are so proud of Jonathan—he bright-
ens our lives. We wish him only health and
happiness in life and on his continued
Jewish journey.

Kimberly and Mark Schuchman warmly
invite the congregation to celebrate
with them on May 17 as their son, Josh-
ua Gabriel, is called to the Torah as a Bar
Mitzvah.
Joshua is an honors student at Randolph
Middle School, where he is a percussionist
in the seventh grade concert band. In ad-
dition to playing music, Joshua is currently
training for his black belt in tae kwon do.
He is also a passionate techie and PC gam-
er, an avid reader, and a frequent player
at Magic the Gathering card tournaments.
For his mitzvah project, Joshua chose
to volunteer at the Jewish Relief Agency
of MetroWest. On one Sunday each month,
Joshua volunteered to pack fresh produce
and nonperishable kosher food and deliver

town. Joshua plans to continue volunteer-
ing with JRA after his Bar Mitzvah.
Joshua looks forward to celebrating his
Bar Mitzvah with his parents, his sister So-
phie, extended family and friends. We are
so proud of you, Joshua, for all your hard
work to achieve this significant milestone.

Matthew and Julie Guss Schneider are
pleased to invite the MJCBY congre-
gation to join us when our son, Coby, is
called to the torah as a Bar Mitzvah on Sat-
urday, May 24, 2014.
An avid learner and a consistent Honor
Roll student, Coby is in seventh grade at
the Hebrew Academy of Morris County.
Coby’s sporting interests include base-
ball and golf. He is also a talented sing-
er and enjoys performing in musicals. Of
course, his favorite activity is when he
is spending time with his family and his
friends (perhaps on Minecraft, as well).
Coby also has a big heart for animals.
His experience with our family dog, Maui,
whom he had known his entire life and
whom we recently lost at the ripe old age
of 14, helped direct him towards animal
care.
For his mitzvah project, Coby has been
volunteering to help animal shelter con-
ditions by creating a supply drive for the
Mount Pleasant Animal Shelter. He contin-
ues to look for any opportunity to care for
animals in general.
Coby enjoys the tradition of becoming
a Bar Mitzvah on the same bimah where
his mother became a Bat Mitzvah. He is
very much looking forward to celebrating
with his sister, Sabrina, his grandparents,
Stephen and Toni Guss, also members of
MJCBY, his cousins, aunts and uncles and
other family and friends. He has been hard
at work preparing for this special day.

Jeffrey Grayzel and Lynn Castrataro
warmly invite the congregation to
celebrate with them as their son Jacob is
called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on May
31. Jacob is a seventh-grader at the Red
Oaks School in Morristown, a Montessori
school he has attended since preschool.
Jacob’s favorite subject is math and he is a
member of the school math team.
Jacob is a competitive jump roper who
has competed at the US Junior Olympics
for the past five years and has won sev-
eral medals. In 2013, Jacob was the overall
bronze medalist and in 2011 he was the
overall silver medalist for his age division.
Jacob will attempt to make the Junior
Olympics team again in 2014. He also en-
joys skiing, tennis and playing the piano.
Jacob and his family recently returned
from an 9-day trip to Israel, where he
celebrated his Bar Mitzvah with a service
atop Masada. The service was a beautiful
and special experience for both him and
his family, that will long be remembered.
It was Jacob’s first trip to Israel and he
loved it.
For his mitzvah project, Jacob raised
money for the Abayudaya Jews living in
Uganda to support the coffee cooperative
they have established. Jacob sold bags of
coffee and hand-knit kippot made by the
village members. In addition, Jacob also
volunteered at the Teen Pride teen center
in Morristown, holding a weekly after-
school jump rope session as an alternative
fitness program for interested teens.
Jacob’s parents, brother Alexander, and
all his grandparents are so proud of Jacob
and his accomplishments. They, along with
his aunts, uncles, cousins and friends look
forward to his special day.

School News
The school year is coming to a close.
Religious School is ending on May 18.
Our classrooms will be lonely on Wednes-
day afternoons and Sunday mornings, and
it will be many months until laughter fills
our hallways at those times again.
As we reflect on the past year, we are so
pleased with the vast amount of learning
that has happened in our Religious School
this year. Watching our third and fourth
graders follow prayers in a siddur, their
desire to learn is so apparent. Hearing
our sixth and seventh graders talk about
Israel-Arab conflict, play in the band, and
discuss Jewish values is inspiring. Watch-
ing our youngest children proudly carry
home the Jewish crafts they have made in
Religious School is heartwarming. We are
so proud.
Time in Religious School represents time
spent with Jewish friends, time learning
and saying prayers, time learning about
Jewish history, traditions, and culture.
Summer is a long time to be away from
that…so we have a few ideas to live a
Jewish summer.
Is your child a reader? There are fabulous
books—fiction and nonfiction—on Jewish
subjects for children of all ages. Logon to
Jewishlibraries.org and Jewishbookcoun-
cil.org. Find links that list Sydney Taylor
and National Jewish Book Award winners
through the years (all Jewish-themed
books). These books are a fabulous way to
keep your child connected to his/her heri-
tage over the summer.
Is your child a chef? Prepare for
Shabbat together. Teach your child to
make the best matzah balls ever, roast
a chicken and bake a challah. Do you
have that recipe for your grandmoth-
er’s strudel in your recipe box? Take it
out and tackle that challenging recipe
with your child. Kids love to cook.
Is your child a traveler? Take a road
trip. See the Jewish Children’s Museum in
Brooklyn, the Holocaust Museum in Wash-
ington DC, the Lower East Side Tenement
Museum. Visit Ellis Island and the Statue
of Liberty. Drive to Newport, RI, and see
the oldest synagogue in the United States.
Share information about when your fami-
lies came to this country. There are so
many fascinating Jewish places to see!
Is your child an athlete? The 2014 Mac-
cabi Games are in August in Cherry Hill,
NJ. Check out the games together. Did you
know that the National Jewish Sports Hall
of Fame and Jewish Museum is located in
Commack, NY? We didn’t. But it will prob-
ably be one of our road trips this year!
We’ve left the simplest ideas for last.

Just as the Jewish slaves were reborn in
the Passover story, we now feel alive
again as we embrace the warmth of May.
The dreariness of months past is now re-
placed with the color green, which sym-
bolizes rebirth. At Shalom Yeladim we feel
rejuvenated and eager to continue learning
about our special Jewish holidays, two of
which fall this month.
Yom Ha’atzmaut is Israel Independence
Day. The children at Shalom Yeladim will
stand behind a large paper bus and walk
from classroom to classroom as if they were
touring the land of Israel. In each room,
the children will experience the essence of
a major city in Israel. They will see pictures
of the city and participate in a hands-on
activity related to that city. We will sing
“Happy Birthday” to Israel and have special
birthday cake.
On Friday, May 16, we will celebrate
Lag B’Omer—a festive holiday celebrated
by having children go to parks to play. On
this day, the children will play in our play-
ground, do an outside craft and sing songs.
We will also celebrate our moms on Fri-
day, May 9, by having them be our special
guests at our Shabbat service, which will
be followed by an “Oneg.” The children will
have some special surprises for their moms
to help them celebrate their special day.
Shalom Yeladim is now welcoming all
families regardless of denomination. Curric-
ulum will remain the same. Please SPREAD
THE WORD to friends and neighbors. We will
not disappoint!

Youth News
Once this school year draws to a close,
our Carmel and her third-grade class-
mates, will be stepping up to Sababah.
Consequently, as this year’s Junior Sa-
babah programmers, we would like to in-
vite an interested parent or parents who
may like to volunteer to run the Junior
Sababah program in the upcoming 2014
to 2015 school year to reach out to us.
The goal of Junior Sababah is to have a
program one day after Religious School ev-
ery other month during the school year. We
found bagels and ice cream followed by a
fun icebreaker activity and then an Israel-
related learning exercise to be a winning
formula. The only limitation is your cre-
ativity. We sincerely enjoyed putting to-
gether the programs and sharing in the fun
with the Junior Sababahniks. We are sure
you will too!

Morristown USY had a great time trav-
eling through Israel at our Amazing
Race - Israel Edition event on April 27. We
were happy to have the eighth graders join
us once again and everyone learned some-
thing new about the different regions in
Israel. This month we are looking forward
to Roller Skating and having fun at Flor-
ham Park Roller Rink on May 18 after the
Annual Youth Picnic in Lewis Morris Park.
We are always looking for more USYers to
help lead the group and plan activities and
next month we will be holding our board
elections so please keep an eye out for the
board applications in your inbox!

What a great April we had at Kadima! From
our Purim Party where we made delicious
hamantaschen to the amazingly creative des-
erts we made at our Iron Chef, we had a sweet
month all around! It’s been such a great year
at Kadima so far, and we want to make sure we
end it on the right foot. We hope to see many
of our eighth graders at the regional eighth
grade Shabbaton in Wayne, and can’t wait for
our exciting May events! We hope you can join
us for our mystery event on May 7 as well as
the End of Year Kadima Party on the 14th where
we will be welcoming the fifth graders. Hope
you had an amazing Passover and can’t wait for
the exciting end to the already amazing year at
Kadima!

pation of a fun and relaxing summer,
we want to thank all of our members for
their support over the past year. We have
had such a fun and interesting array of
programs and events with another very
important program coming up this month.
On May 15 we will host a program on the
Kindertransport. All are invited—please
see this newsletter for details on the pro-
gram.
June brings with it the installation of
our new Board; some of our members will
be continuing and some stepping down. All
of our Board members have worked togeth-
er to make this one of our best years ever
and we are grateful for the opportunity
to collaborate with such smart and hard-
working women.
