PRE-REQUISITE SKILL

• DIVIDE AND ROUND TO THE NEAREST TENTH

• 8 ÷ 3 = 2.7

• 19 ÷ 6 = 3.2

• 52 ÷ 8 = 6.5

• 67 ÷ 9 = 7.4

MIXED NUMBERS

• A Mixed Number indicates the sum of a whole number and a fraction. A number like 11/3 is an example of a mixed number.

• 1 1/3 = 1 + 1/3

Improper Fraction

• If the numerator is greater than the denominator, then the fractions ae called improper fractions.

• Mixed Numbers can written as improper fraction.

MIXED NUMBERS AS IMPROPER FRACTIONS

• Draw a model for 4 1/6, then write 4 1 as

6

Improper fractions.

Since the mixed number is greater than 4, draw 5 models that are divided into 6 equal sections to show sixths. Then shade four wholes and one sixth.

CONFIDENTIAL 7

Write 4 1 as an improper fraction 6

• There are twenty-five 1/6 s. So, 4 1/6 can be written as 25

Now your turn!

• Draw a model for 3 3/8. Then write 3 3/8 as an improper fraction.

3 3/8 = 27/83 3/8 = 27/8

Mixed Numbers as Improper Fractions

• Multiply the whole number and the denominator. Then add the numerator

• 6 ½ = (6 x 2) + 1 = 13

• If the numerator is greater than the denominator, then the fraction is called improper fraction.

• To convert a mixed number into improper fraction, multiply the whole number and denominator and to the product add the numerator.

• To convert an improper fraction into a mixed fraction, divide the numerator by the denominator and use the remainder as the numerator of the fraction.
