MIT1525 SALES MESSAGE AND STRATEGY
The current Megger MIT range of 5 kV and 10 kV range was launched in May 2012 building on a success story of experience and innovation. Since then the success has continued building a huge customer base just like their predecessors. Over the years customer have summed up their reasons to buy as, “We buy these instruments because they work!”. The latest range has proven to be an unrivalled combination of testing performance, simplicity to use, toughness, reliability and convenient small size and light weight. Megger is now the first company to develop an instrument that combines all of these attributes with a 15 kV output. The MIT advertising tag lines
Megger – the name in insulation testing (used in April 2012 launch) Or Works where ever you work – and now in applications that require 15kV
With new developments in insulation material technology the trend is moving towards the use of higher test voltages, indeed Megger has seen a big increase in 10kV instrument sales over the last 3 years. Apart from the obvious benefits of increasing test voltage relating to the increase in test current, higher test voltage requirements have appeared in a number of standards, notably 10 kV in IEEE43 :2000. However 15 kV is now in demand as engineers experience earlier degradation detection and better fault detection on high voltage equipment. Many power utilities in South America have already incorporated 15 kV testing into their procedures and this trend is now spreading into Europe, Middle East and Asia. In the US NETA standards specify 15 kV. The NETA Pearl reconditioning standard / NETA MTS-1997 specifies 15 kV testing on equipment with a maximum voltage rating of 35 kV and above. Motors tested to NETA ATS 2007 with 34,500 V or above on their name plate also require testing at 15kV. Introducing the complete MIT industrial insulation tester range - now four models 5 kV to 15 kV DC

Downloading of saved results, logs and real-time streaming of results is possible via a USB cable interface. The 15 kV test voltage is an important feature enabling customers to measure motors and generators above 34500 V (NETA ATS 2007. Section 7.15.1) and equipment rated above 35 kV (PEARL Reconditioning Standard / NETA MTS-1997 Table 10.1).
Insulation test output
MIT1525: preset voltages are 1000 V, 2500 V, 5000 V, 10000 V, 15000 V and a user settable ‘lock’ voltage from 40 V to 15 kV; voltage outputs are adjustable using up/down arrow buttons and are specified within the range -0% to +4%.

Insulation resistance ranges
Digital : 30 TΩ @ 15 kV for MIT1525 Analogue : 10 TΩ
The insulation measuring ranges have been chosen as a result of extensive feedback obtained from the industrial user. In these environments higher TΩ ranges tend to be heavily influenced by ambient conditions.
Insulation resistance accuracy
MIT1525, ± 5% from 1 MΩ to 3 TΩ, ± 20% to 30 TΩ
The new MIT1525 has been designed to provide the accuracy where it matters most. High insulation measurements fall in the 100 GΩ to 500 GΩ range, with a few readings reaching 1TΩ. The measurement accuracy is most important in this range. For this reason the new MIT1525 15 kV insulation tester provides ± 5% accuracy from 1 MΩ to 3TΩ.
Insulation test modes
Basic IR test Timed (auto-stop) IR test DAR PI DD SV Ramp
Diagnostic tests in summary:-
Dielectric Absorption Ratio (DAR)
Short version of PI test, typically with readings taken at 30 second and 1 minute Can be performed with other test times Used on thin, low absorption insulation
Polarization index test
Readings taken at 1 minute and 10 minutes. PI = R10m / R1m PI value - generally above 2 is okay and > 4 is good Detection of damp or contaminated insulation
Dielectric Discharge (DD)
Measures the discharge currents 60 seconds after an insulation test has been completed
Reabsorption current at 60 seconds indicates insulation condition Slow reabsorption points to a problem The DD value = Current flowing after 1 minute (mA)
Test Voltage (V) x Capacitance (F) DD value generally less than 2 is acceptable Used to show up single layer of poor insulation
Megger Instruments Ltd. Page 17 of 19 Product Launch Sales Guide MIT1525 Jan 2014
Copyright© 2014 Megger Instruments Limited, Archcliffe Road, Dover CT17 9EN
Step Voltage Test (SV)
Increase voltage in steps (usually 5 steps) Test voltage constant between steps for about 60 seconds Insulation reading should remain constant Any marked or unusual resistance reduction is an indication of weakness. Shows up cracked or dry insulation
Ramp Test
Test voltage is gradually increased (ramped up) to a final
voltage level Advantage over step voltage is that the ramp test is less
likely to result in unpredictable damage due to the sudden large increase in test voltage experienced in the step voltage test. In addition the ramp test allows the user to separate the leakage current from the capacitive and polarisation currents. This means small defects in insulation can be detected more easily.
As the voltage is increased the insulation leakage current is graphed and continuously monitored during the test. Should a sudden increase in leakage current be observed the operator has the opportunity to terminate the test before a full breakdown occurs, potentially damaging the insulation.
The ramp test is specified in IEEE 95-2002, The IEEE Recommended practice for insulation testing of AC electric machinery (2300 V and above) with high direct voltage.
IEEE 95-2002 recommends a slow and continuous increase of test voltage of typically 1kV per minute. (the 15 kV insulation testers default to this rate)
Comparing the resulting current curve with the example curves in IEEE 95-2002 allows detection of various faults.
T
he TThe Bureau of Reclamation recommends the use of the DC Ramp test on a wide range of machines with polyester, asphalt and epoxy-mica insulations
Another possible application for the ramp test is to test voltage suppression devices by monitoring the applied voltage at a specified current.
During this test measurements on the MIT1526 may be streamed live to a PC via a
USB cable to the supplied Power DB Lite software. The current curve is plotted live in Power DB Lite during the test allowing the user to monitor progress as recommended by IEEE95-2002.

Voltage measurement / detection:
Dedicated voltmeter function; 30 V to 660 V DC or AC with frequency (45 Hz to 65 Hz), used as a safety feature to check for induced voltages
Voltmeter display shown in resistance test modes as a warning of live voltage if a voltage 50 V or above is detected at the terminals
Guard Terminal:
An important feature of any IRT is the performance of the Guard terminal specified as; 2% error guarding 500 kΩ leakage with 100 MΩ load
When in use the guard terminal performance is part of the measurement uncertainty therefore it is important to provide a specification for this function.
The guard terminal is an important tool to avoid low insulation resistance values caused by the effects of leakage currents
User Safety
MIT1525 is safety rated at CATIV 1000V The CATIV 1000V rating is maintained to an altitude of 3000 m Some utilities specify CATIV as for use on their distribution network
Operating Temperature Range
