Mud, rain, mud, snow and more mud. That is what Audrain County and a few other counties are dealing with.

Hello, I am Matt Deimeke from Mexico and the Northeast District. I will be serving as your President this year—wish me luck! As president, I will do my best for this organization. If anybody has any questions or suggestions, don’t hesitate to call.

In the Mexico area, we have been really wet since fall. There is not much corn planted but anhydrous has progressed. I would bet that what went on was plenty

wet just by what we have done. It is raining here now with already an inch and a half with more to come.

Just remember, as you dry out and get into the fields: always be safe. We put in long hours and start to forget things like safety. Safety is number one. The joy of coming home to a family is very rewarding after a long day. And as always, no matter how busy you get, always take some time out for the family.

Do not forget to come out to the Mexico Truck and Tractor Pull on June 8th. The summer tour will be held in Chillicothe August 4th-6th. Watch the website for more information. Hope to see everyone there and wish everyone a safe planting season!

Update from the President

Global market access has always been key to the Missouri Corn Merchandising Council’s (MCMC) efforts to find new demand for corn, ethanol and distiller’s dried grains with solubles (DDGS). In the near-term, exports of corn, ethanol, corn-fed meat, and other corn co-products are the number one opportunity for increased corn grind. Given the current economy, MCMC is laser-focused on maintaining and growing international demand.

Longstanding partners like the U.S. Grains Council and U.S. Meat Export Federation help in this mission. In 2017/2018, the U.S. set a record for the second consecutive year for exports of corn in all forms, with roughly 4.5 billion bushels. Ethanol exports accounted for over 1.6 billion gallons, a 19 percent increase.

Countries around the world have adopted pro-ethanol policies to combat air quality concerns and take advantage of this cost-effective octane source. Countries like Brazil, Canada, India, Japan, EU, and Mexico are leading the way. The momentum is building, and we are seeing the benefits of ethanol reverberating globally.

Our southern neighbors are crucial customers of corn, ethanol, and DDGS. The Missouri Corn checkoff has made significant investments to

maximize Mexico’s potential as a grain customer, since 2014. In the 2017/18 marketing year, Mexico ranked as the largest buyer of U.S. corn and DDGS, with sales of each increasing from the prior year. As our #1 corn customer, Missouri corn farmers are closely involved in trade discussions around this market.

Now is not the time to be complacent. MCMC’s volunteer grower-leaders are charging forward to build markets at home and abroad and improve the long-term profitability of Missouri’s corn farmers.

Theodore (Ted)

DeVault has been the Adult Agriculture Instructor in Mexico since 2005; he received his BS in Agricultural Systems Management in 1999 and Masters in 2008. He has been

married to Dr. Treena DeVault for 20 years, together they have three children: Samuel, Noah and Daisy. Ted and Treena own the Mexico Animal Hospital managing 20+ employees. Ted also farms with his father and brother on a large cow-calf and row-crop operation. He has served as Elder at Southside Christian Church where he has taught the high school Sunday school class for 18 years. DeVault is a Mexico native whose parents were charter members of the Mexico Young Farmers. As an FBMA instructor (Farm Business Management Analysis), each farm he works with sets one year, five year, and long term goals. They pick five areas to benchmark and track for

improvement. Ted believes confidentiality is critical, with a willingness to shift gears, admit when you don’t know and when wrong, and have stick-to-it-ness, with the ability to think outside of the box. Then, apply common sense and logic: never ask someone to do something you haven’t done or wouldn’t do. He believes you need to be honest, real, and while you do not have to be the expert in everything, you need to become educated where you can, and build relationships. The Mexico Young Farmers are preparing for their 14th annual Truck and Tractor Pull that has an average attendance of 3,000 people. While it takes over 100 volunteers the night of their truck and tractor pull, Ted says it’s been worth it seeing the difference

in the community. It has been voted Pull of the Year by Excalibur, is family friendly, and has been the Mexico Young Farmers source to give $56,000+ towards scholarships to Mexico graduates; $37,000+ on the Audrain 4-H fairground improvements; and sponsor educational trips and charter buses for FFA and YF members to farm shows and tours. During Ag Week each spring Mexico YF and Mexico FFA take a bus trip. On even years to the Western Farm Show and on odd years they take Ag industry tours. This spring was their second trip, which was to Hermann, Mo. The first trip being to Kansas City two years ago. The Mexico Young Farmers also adopt one to three families each year through the local Help Center so that a few more kids in Mexico may experience the joy of Christmas. Ted also sees the importance of being active at state and national levels in Young Farmers by attending state tours, conventions,

district and state workshops, as well as national institutes.Through Young Farmers, Ted works hard to build local

partnerships; co-sponsoring farm tours, conferences; marketing meetings, pool parties, hay rides, open gym nights, open shop nights, volleyball and shop hockey tournaments, super-farmer contest, and serving on agriculture advisory boards. Through the Animal Hospital, Ted and Treena strive to be a family owned business that puts faith and family first. They work to make it a place other people want to work, and where people want to bring their animals (large or small) for trusted care. Through the farm Ted wants to raise his children to be good stewards, appreciating hard work by seeing the fruits of it. Growing a safe reliable food source for generations to come and trying to “leave it a little better than we found it”.

Missouri’s electric cooperatives are proud to sponsor the activities of the Missouri Young Farmers. Electric cooperatives were founded 80 years ago when existing electric utilities refused to bring service to the farm because they could not make a profit from the few people living beyond the city limits. In most cases, the original incorporators of these cooperative utilities were farmers. That tradition continues today as farmers and ranchers make up a good portion of the directors who lead their electric cooperative today. In the eight decades since electric cooperatives brought power to Missouri farms, the quality of life has improved dramatically. Farmers quickly learned how to use this newfound “wiredhand” to increase productivity and profits. As demand for electricity increased, so too did our efforts to ensure you have all of the electricity you need at a price you can afford.Today’s electric cooperatives are deeply ingrained into the communities they serve, so much so that a new cooperative principle — Concern for Community — was added to the list of guiding principles under which cooperatives operate. You will find your local electric cooperative helping out wherever a community need exists. This community involvement comes naturally, because electric cooperatives are a part of the community. Its employees live in the area and its directors are members of the cooperative too.Nationwide, electric cooperatives power 1 out of every 8 Americans. They serve 42 million people on farms, small towns and bustling suburbs. Electric cooperatives generate more than $45 billion in revenue, employ 71,000 people and create an economic impact of nearly $57 billion. And while we energize the countryside, we actually get our power from you.

Proud to Serve You

Trend-BTrend toward better yieldsEvery year about this time, corn health becomes a concern—and for good reason. It’s rare that we have a year when diseases aren’t present. Timely fungicide applications can knock out those diseases and protect the crop’s yield potential.

Push yield even further by applying new Gold Advantage™ Trend-B slow-release nitrogen with the fungicide at tasseling. That’s when corn is rapidly using nitrogen for growth, and Trend-B delivers targeted foliar nutrition when it’s needed the most. Trend-B also includes boron, which is important for reproductive functions in corn but is often deficient in Midwest soils.

Proper timing is critical to get the most out of these applications. Talk with your Crop-Trak consultant or other MFA experts about the benefits of combining fungicides with Trend-B foliar nutrition.

Rain, Rain, Go Away—Flooding 2019Over the past month or so, the Midwest region has received an incredible amount of rain. Strong and severe storms have ravaged our local area. As spring ends and summer rolls through, let’s hope that the weather lightens up so everyone can get back in their fields.
