USTFCCCA TFRI RANKINGS

Welcome to #JavU• Last year, Mississippi State became the first program in NCAA history to see three men throw the javelin over 80.00m. Two of those three throwers return this season in NCAA Champion Anderson Peters and USATF Champion Curtis Thompson. • Freshman Tyriq Horsford has joined the contingent this season threw 78.78m at the NCAA East Prelims. His mark along with those of Peters and Thompson gives MSU the top three spots in the NCAA this year. The trio boasts 28 of the top 30 throws in the NCAA while holding spots No. 1-23.• The USTFCCCA's #EventSquad rankings rate the average of a team's top four athletes in each event. The Bulldogs do not qualify in the men's javelin with only three throwers, but even with a fourth throwing 0.0m, State would still rank No. 16 in the nation.• The Bulldog women have also stepped up this year. Sarah Blake has broken MSU's school record in the javelin at 52.73m. Caroline Standley broke the Dawgs' freshman record with a throw of 43.98m.

Sweeping is Sweet• #JavU swept the SEC podium, marking the first 1-2-3 finish by the Bulldogs in any event at the conference meet, then followed that with a clean sweep at the NCAA East Prelims.• With the top three qualifiers in the javelin, the Bulldogs are set up to make more podium history.• Last year, Anderson Peters and Nico Quijera gave Mississippi State the first 1-2 finish in the javelin at the NCAA Championships since North Carolina did so in 2007.• State's trio marks the 14th time a team has placed three athletes in the NCAA men's javelin final. The Bulldogs are just the sixth team to do so since the javelin was redesigned in 1986.• There have been 10 total podium sweeps across various events at the NCAA Championships including six by men's teams and four by women's programs. The most recent came in 2010 in the men's 1500m (Oregon).• There has only been one men's javelin podium sweep in NCAA history when a trio of Oregon seniors accomplished the feat in 1964.

Peters on the Pinacle• Anderson Peters boasts the No. 6 javelin mark in the world and top throw in the NCAA so far this season after winning the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays with an MSU-record throw of 86.07m. That is the third-longest throw in NCAA history, and Peters now holds 10 of the top 25 throws in NCAA history.• Excluding fouls, each of his attempts is among the top-25 throws of the year, including all of the top 12 marks.• The reigning NCAA javelin champion, Peters is one of 10 athletes on the men's post-conference championships watchlist for The Bowerman, collegiate track and field's highest honor.• As a freshman, Peters captured the NCAA javelin title in June with a meet-record toss of 82.82m (217-9) on his third throw in Eugene, Oregon.• He would be just the third MSU athlete in any event to win consecutive NCAA titles, joining Olympian C.S. Cochran in the 440yd (1922, 1923) and Tiffany McWilliams in the 1500m (2003, 2004).

Middle Distance Might• The Bulldogs ran an eye-opening 800m at the Crimson Tide Invitational, finishing 1-2-3 to land among the national leaders. • Marco Arop broke the meet and facility record at 1:45.50, which was second in the nation and No. 13 in the world (as of 5/26). He had finished second at consecutive NCAA Championships (2018 outdoors, 2019 indoors), but did not get out of East Prelims this year.• Dejon Devroe clocked a personal-best 1:47.50, which ranks 14th in the NCAA this year, No. 81 in the world and fifth in MSU history. Arop is the top Canadian, and Devroe is the No. 21 American.• Arop shattered the MSU and Canadian record in the indoor 800m on Feb. 9 at the Tiger Paw Invitational, running 1:45.90 to win the event, a mark that ranked second in the NCAA during the indoor season.• For the women, Alon Lewis ran the fourth-fastest time in school history (2:04.98) to advance from the East Prelims. Charlotte Cayton-Smith's 2:05.23 to take bronze at the SEC Championships ranks sixth among Britons and is fifth in school history.

Records Were Made to be Broken• MSU athletes have posted 23 marks inside State's outdoor top five, including six school records, across multiple events this season. The Bulldogs have also broken two freshman records this year.• State set seven such marks at the SEC Championships and broke two school records at the East Prelims.• Forty current MSU athletes hold marks inside the top five in outdoor school history. Alon Lewis leads the way with 11 such marks.

Rejuvenated Jones• Junior Stephen Jones has exploded into the steeplechase and was the SEC silver medalist in the event despite running it competitively for just the third time in his career. He had never done so before this year.• In his fourth career steeplechase, Jones ran of 8:42.68, breaking the oldest untied, championship-event school record in the MSU record book to earn a spot at the NCAA Championships.• Jones redshirted the indoor season to recover from knee surgery in November. Since his return to the track, he has also run the fourth-fastest 5000m in MSU history this season.• After training for the steeplechase in practice as a freshman, he returned to the event this year, running his first collegiate steeplechase at the Al Schmidt Bulldog Relays where he placed second. Last year's SEC steeplechase champion, Arkansas' Kyle Hosting, is a friend of Jones' and encouraged him and offered him tips as he learned the event.• At the SEC Championships, Jones became the first MSU man to score in multiple individual events (excluding relays) since Nathan Arnett and Emanuel Mayers both picked up points in the 110m hurdles and 400m hurdles in 2012.

A Championship Weekend to Remember• MSU's nine medals at the SEC Championships were the most since 2003. The Bulldogs saw 19 individuals and the men's 4x400m relay team finish higher than they were seeded entering the competition.• The Bulldogs collected 23 season bests and 17 personal bests. Nine athletes improved their seeding for the East Prelims, including three who broke into qualifying position for the first time this year.• Both teams posted their third-highest score since 2010. Their combined total (94) is behind only 2015 (103 points) and 2010 (100 points) in that span.

Bounding Bulldogs• Three-time All-American Logan Boss returns NCAA Championships for the first time since she placed third in the high jump at the 2018 indoor meet. She redshirted the 2018 outdoor season to return for a fifth year.• The graduate student's indoor school record of 1.92m is No. 3 in SEC indoor history. Only one other athlete in the field (Alabama's Stacey Destin) has cleared 1.90m in her career - indoors and outdoors. • Tiffany Flynn broke her own school record in the triple jump to place second at the SEC Championships with a wind-aided 13.87m leap. She now ranks third nationally.

Returning Qualifiers• In 2018, MSU's men sent 12 athletes to nationals. Eight returned for the 2018 season, and all eight qualified for the NCAA East Prelims. On the women's side, State's women advanced five qualifiers to Oregon last year. Two of those, Alon Lewis and Riley White, qualified for the first rounds this year.• Eight Bulldogs will make at least their second career Championships appearance this year, while Stephen Jones and Tyriq Horsford have reached the finals site for the first time. Five of those athletes made it to the finals last season; however, Sarah Blake was competing for Kentucky at the time.• The Bulldogs' broke their 2016 record for athletes at the East Prelims (24) with 28 individuals over 27 entries, including nine first-time qualifiers. State's record for entries is 35 set in 2017. • State has won mulitple events at the NCAA East Prelims in three of the last four years after Tiffany Flynn (triple jump) and Anderson Peters (javelin) did so this year. Peters and Marco Arop (800m) did so in 2018 while Marta Freias (1500m) and Brandon McBride (800m) won their events in 2016.
