Origins of Black History Month
The story of Black History Month begins in 1915, half a century after the Thirteenth Amendment abolished slavery
in the United States. That September, the Harvard-trained historian Carter G. Woodson and the prominent
minister Jesse E. Moorland founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (ASNLH), an
organization dedicated to researching and promoting achievements by black Americans and other peoples of
African descent. Known today as the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH), the
group sponsored a national Negro History week in 1926, choosing the second week of February to coincide with
the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. The event inspired schools and communities nationwide
to organize local celebrations, establish history clubs and host performances and lectures.
In the decades the followed, mayors of cities across the country began issuing yearly proclamations recognizing
Negro History Week. By the late 1960s, thanks in part to the Civil Rights Movement and a growing awareness of
black identity, Negro History Week had evolved into Black History Month on many college campuses. President
Gerald R. Ford officially recognized Black History Month in 1976, calling upon the public to "seize the opportunity
to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our
history."
Since then, every American president has designated February as Black History Month and endorsed a specific
theme. The 2013 theme, At the Crossroads of Freedom and Equality: The Emancipation Proclamation and the
March on Washington, marks the 150th and 50th anniversaries of two pivotal events in African-American history.
Black History THEN... Abolitionist Harriet Tubman was born Araminta Ross around 1820 in Bucktown, Maryland. Although reared in
slavery, she married a free black man –– John Tubman –– in 1844. He opposed her plans to flee north, so she
escaped alone via the Underground Railroad in 1849. Over the next decade she led nearly 300 Maryland slaves to
safety, including several siblings and her elderly parents.
Known as “the Moses of her people,” Harriet Tubman was devoutly religious and a believer in decisive action. She
helped John Brown organize his 1859 raid on Harper’s Ferry, Virginia, but was prevented by illness from
accompanying him. During the Civil War she repeatedly went behind enemy lines to spy for the Union, and recruit
slaves to fight in the army.
Black History NOW... In 1988, Whitney Elizabeth Houston broke a US chart record with seven consecutive number 1 hits, overtaking
the previous record of six achieved by The Beatles and The Bee Gees. The singer and film actress was born in
Newark, New Jersey and is the daughter of gospel singer Cissy Houston. Whitney Houston was an American
recording artist, singer, actress, producer, and model.
In 2009, the Guinness Book of World Records cited her as the most awarded female act of all time. Houston was
one of the world's best-selling music artists, having sold over 200 million records worldwide. She released six
studio albums, one holiday album and three movie soundtrack albums, all of which have diamond, multi-platinum,
platinum or gold certification. Houston's crossover appeal on the popular music charts, as well as her prominence
on MTV, starting with her video for "How Will I Know," influenced several African American women artists who
follow in her footsteps.

DEALING WITH DEBTThe greatest threat to successful Christian money management is the
problem of debt. Some believe that God prohibits Christians from ever
borrowing money. We could simplify the situation if we could locate a
verse in the Bible that declares, “Thou shalt not borrow!” However, no
such commandment exists. Paul’s words to the Romans have
sometimes been used to prevent borrowing money. “Let no debt
remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another.”
Romans 13:8
Those words have been interpreted as indicating that we must never
owe anything except love. We are instructed to meet all obligations. As
long as the obligation is met, debt is acceptable. If the payment is made
according to the contract, then the obligation is fulfilled.
If all borrowing is forbidden, Scripture would have to prohibit lending.
However, lending is allowed under certain conditions (Deut. 28:12; Ps
37:26, Luke 6:34-35). In a parable, Jesus condemned the man who hid
money rather than lending it out with interest (Luke 19:23).
Although the Bible does not prohibit borrowing, it does not encourage
debt. Debt is always discussed as a negative factor. The biblical
principle is that borrowing is seldom an effective method of money
management. To borrow money is not a violation of
