POPE FRANCIS ''God’s mercy transforms human hearts; it enables us, through the experience of a faithful love, to become

merciful in turn. In an ever new miracle, divine mercy shines forth in our lives, inspiring each of us to love our neighbor and to devote ourselves to what the Church’s tradition calls the spiritual and corporal

works of mercy.

These works remind us that faith finds expression in concrete everyday actions meant to help our

neighbors in body and spirit: by feeding, visiting, comforting and structing them. On such things

will we be judged...' Message of His Holiness Pope Francis for Lent 2016

November 20, 2016 Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe Page 3

Virtue comes from the Latin word cardo which means hinge. All the various Christian virtues are hinged to at least one of the cardinal virtues. Those cardinal virtues are prudence, justice, fortitude, and temperance. As Christians, we are asked to support those virtues by the daily practice of them. Only a critical thinking mind can process those virtues with a deepened sense of commitment and honesty. In order for critical thinking to work in relationship with the Christian message and mission, there needs to be an appreciation and discernment for universal truth. Universal truth is the staying force and ra-tionale for the habitual practice of virtues on a dai-ly basis. Without universal truth, we are subject to the whims and capricious wants of human selfish-ness and ego-centricity. You might well note that universal truth is created and originated by a su-pernatural source, which by the way we call God. It is most definitely not an invention of mankind. Our only disposition, as believing Christians, is to be able to influence the force of universal truth by either giving it freedom or enslavement. Enslavement does not offer the invitation for others to join in the quest to become virtuous. Like any invitation, the appropriate response is actually based on freedom which is derived from virtue, itself. When virtue is practiced, its spirit and behavior challenges others to integrate and dignify their own lives with virtue. The constant exposure of virtue will greatly assist and encourage others to identify and modify their own existence as humans in our democratic society. The constant practice of virtue presents a good example for an educative process by others to adopt such virtuous thoughts and be-haviors. Sharing instances and tales of virtue helps to offer the opportunity to continue the growth of virtue within us. When we communicate virtuous examples, we present specific aids in assisting others to strive for the achievement of such high ideals and goals. In addition, God’s grace is offered to us to purify and strengthen our all our efforts to become more virtuous. Truly, virtue is an act making us identify and cooperate with the Kingdom of Heav-en as it assists us to answer “Yes” when Heaven is offered as an invitation stemming from God’s love to join Him in the Kingdom of Heaven.

Beware! Virtue is always hampered by sin. If you don’t see virtue in operation, you will surely know that sin is at work. Please through prayer and the sacraments let us open ourselves to the gifts of the Holy Spirit and God’s grace so we can feel support-ed in our quest to be a virtuous people. Remember the theological virtues of faith, hope, and charity are in particular those virtues that relate directly to God. At our baptism, these virtues are infused within us as gifts from God. We must, as Christians, give them freedom as we live out our baptism to increase the well-being of human growth and to strengthen us in faith. Look at the Ten Commandments, they forbid cer-tain sins, but they also point to certain virtues that will help us to avoid sin. Virtues such as generosity, poverty of spirit, gentleness, purity of heart, temper-ance, and fortitude assist us in overcoming and avoiding the seven deadly sins known as capital sins – pride, greed, envy, anger, lust, gluttony, and lazi-ness. These seven deadly sins the main reason for encouraging other sins. Please make every attempt to ensure your growth in virtue and to share it with everyone you meet. You may ask why; because virtues play an important role in the life of every true Christian. The role of virtue is to act as the oversight judge of true Christian morality. “

Meet Mary

Bring your friends and family to experience beautiful, devotional virtual pilgrimages to Fatima, Lourdes, and Medjugorje. This series presented by three pilgrims to the apparition sites, including our own Deacon Mike Zibrun, will run from December 5-8th at 7 p.m. and includes the Vigil Mass for the Immaculate Con-ception on the 7th. SCHOOL NEWS

On Friday, November 11th our 6th-8th graders along with their teachers participated in Feed My Starving Children Mobile Pack which took place at the Suter Company in Syc-amore. They packed enough meals for 237 chil-dren for one year! Friday evening the 6th-8th grad-ers enjoyed the Harvest Dance sponsored by the student council. Friday afternoon the school celebrated Veteran’s Day with Mass at 1pm. Many children invited fam-ily members or friends who were veterans. It was a very touching moment when our children moved around the church blessing the more than 25 vet-erans present by making the sign of the cross on their foreheads. Many thanks to school staff members Lisa Stoner, Dawn Rodriguez, and Kim Hulmes along with the 4th grade class for plan-ning the Mass and the beautiful ceremony and reception afterwards. Construction on the playground fence began this past week. A huge thank you to all who contribut-ed to this project.

Casino Night was held this past Saturday night. Thank you to everyone who donated, attended, and volunteered to make this night such a suc-cess! On behalf of the school staff and the reli-gious education staff, we cannot thank the com-mittee enough for the tremendous amount of work that was put into this event!

We are looking forward to the completion of our Greens fundraiser. They should be arriving the week of November 28th. Thank you to Michelle Eklund and Lauren Brandmeyer for making this happen.

There will be no school this coming week for Thanksgiving Break. However, parent/teacher conferences will take place this coming Monday and Tuesday. We wish all of you God’s blessing on this Thanksgiving.

Give thanks to the Lord for He is good, His loving kindness is ever-lasting!

Jan Benson, Principal

Playground Fence Project Thank you to everyone who donated towards the playground fence pro-

ject . We needed approximately $7,000 to be able to provide the supplies necessary to get the go ahead. We have reached our goal through many generous donations, a parishioner match, and a do-nation from the School PTO. You will begin to see this project take place over he next couple weeks. Thank you again for your generosity.

ADORATION

I did not even know who Christ was, that He was God. I had not the faint-est idea that there existed such a thing as the Blessed Sacrament. I

thought churches were simply places where people got together and sang a few hymns. And yet now I tell you, you who are now what I once was, unbelievers, it is that Sacrament, and that alone, the Christ living in our midst, and sacrificed by us, and for us and with us, in the clean and perpetual Sacrifice, it is He alone who holds our world together, and keeps us all from being poured headlong and immedi-ately into the pit of our eternal destruction. And I tell you there is a power that goes forth from that Sacrament, a power of light and truth, even into the hearts of those who have heard nothing of Him and seem to be incapa-ble of belief.

DEAC’S CORNER… GODS’ PROMISES

IN 26 LETTERS OF THE ALPHABET “Although things are not perfect, Be-cause of trials or pains, Continue in thanksgiv-ing and Do not begin to blame…Even when times are hard, Fierce winds are bound to blow, God is forever able.

Hold on to what you know, Imagine life without His love…Joy would cease to be, so Keep thanking Him for all the things Love imparts to thee, and Move out of “camp com-plaining”, for No weapon that is known, On earth can yield the power. Praise can do it alone. Quit Looking at the future and Redeem

the time at hand. Start each day with worship, for to Thank is a command, Until we see Him coming Victori-ous in the sky….well, We’ll run the race with gratitude, Xalting God on high, and Yes there’ll

be some good and yes some bad times too, but Zion waits in glory, Where none are ever

sad. So just remember that the shortest distance to a problem, is the distance between your knees and the floor, and the one who kneels to the Lord can stand up to anything.
