Father Gary Writes

As announced in last week’s bulletin, our new School Principal is Dr. Anne Penny, current Principal of St. Charles Catholic School in Winnipeg (Canada). With both American and Canadian experience as a university professor, teacher and administrator, she has spent her career teaching children, developing teachers and initiating educational programs. Dr. Anne will begin her tenure with us at the beginning of July. We look forward to welcoming her to our family of faith.

The parking lots are in the process of being resurfaced - they receive a lot of wear and tear! This cost is being covered by last year’s land sale. Having just replaced the roof, internal renovations, repairs and upgrades will soon begin at the rectory. This building has not been touched since it was built in the 1980’s. The work will take some four to five months. The cost is being covered by a recent Bequest. As I have stated before, we have to maintain our buildings and grounds while continuing the essential mission of Christ’s Church, which is to evangelize! We are blessed to have Steve Walker as our Maintenance Director. All of our projects are under his professional care and watchful eye. No project is under-taken without the approval of the Bishop and our Parish Finance Council. I think you will agree that we are taking good care of our buildings. Every summer we also have ‘maintenance projects’ at the school. May we continue to be good and faithful stewards of all that God has entrusted to us!

Today we celebrate Mothers Day! We pray for all mothers, for all they do, and for the lives they’ve nurtured: for expectant mothers, wondering and waiting; for new mothers with new responsibilities; for those who are tired, stressed or depressed; for those who balance the tasks of work and family; for those whose children have physical, mental or emotional disabilities; for those who raise children on their own; for those who struggle to feed their children due to poverty; for those who selflessly place their child for adoption; for those who adopt a child into their family; for those who have lost a child; for those who care for the children of others; for those whose children have left home; for those whose desire to be a mother has not been fulfilled. We love our Moms, at least I hope we do!

On Saturday, May 20th, Elixavier “Xavy” Castro will be ordained to

the Sacred Priesthood by Bishop Gregory in the Cathedral of St. Jude, St. Petersburg, at 11am. Everyone is invited to attend! There will be no morning Services here next Saturday. Next Sunday, May 21

st, we will celebrate our First Communion Masses at 930 and

1130am. The children are excited and so are we! Ordinary gifts of bread and wine take on extraordinary meaning through the power of God’s Word and the presence of the Holy Spirit! At the 5pm Sunday Mass, we celebrate the Graduation of our eighth-grade students, followed by the Senior Dinner and Blessing for those who are finish-ing High School and preparing for College. Please pray for all our beloved young people!

CARNATIONS FOR MOTHERS DAY Sunday, May 14

The carnation is the traditional Mother’s Day flower: white in memory of deceased moth-ers and red for our mothers who are still with us. There will be red and white carnations available for sale after all Masses outside of church on May 13 and 14. The suggested donation is $1 per flower. All proceeds from the sale of the flowers will benefit Kimberly Home pregnancy center. Please take one flower for every dollar donated. Thank you!

MOTHER’S DAY NOVENA There are Mother’s Day Novena envelopes at the church entrances. These envelopes will be placed on the altar for nine days beginning on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 14 and the vigil on May 13. All Mothers are remembered in prayer during these days.

A COMMUNITY OF FAITH, KNOWLEDGE AND SERVICE

Science in the Intermediate Grades

The third, fourth, and fifth graders have been studying a wide variety of topics in Science class. The fifth graders designed models of atoms and electric circuits. As part of a unit on organ systems, the students imagined their own original animals and created diagrams of them. They wrote reports about “discovering” their new creature, describing its sensory organs, as well as the organs it uses for support, protection, and movement.

The fourth graders enjoyed learning about energy and the importance of using clean, renewable energy sources. They produced diagrams depicting the history of water energy, including sawmills, hydroelectric dams, and tidal energy stations. During a unit on heat energy, the class wrote advertisements for convection ovens and made lists of the “Best Insulators” and “Best Conductors.”

In third grade, we studied plant structures and how plants respond to the environment. The students took apart lima bean seeds and identified the seed coat, embryo, and stored food. The class enjoyed making booklets explaining the functions of each part of a plant.

In all three grades we recognize and praise God for the wonders of our natural world. Each class concludes with an intercessory prayer to Saint Albert the Great, the patron saint of science.

The students are always amazed at how Math seeps into their everyday lives. Even those students in the primary grades recognize the importance of math in their lives. When they go shopping at the school store in the morning they practice counting their money and change. When they buy items at lunch they continue to strengthen that skill. They are beginning to recognize that telling time, on a clock or calendar, is a mathematical measurement. Math is everywhere and we cannot escape it!

Just recently the fifth and eighth grade students put their math skills to the test. The fifth graders ran a city for the day at Enterprise Village. They became employees and consumers of many different companies and kept balanced budgets. The eighth graders had their own experience at Finance Park where they had to support themselves and some even a family on an assigned salary. The students experienced firsthand the difficulty of providing life’s necessities on a budget.

The Math program at Our Lady of Lourdes goes beyond teaching the standards. It provides the students real life opportunities to use those standards in a very realistic way.

Where would we be without Math?

REJOICE IN HOPE

RELEASING THE HOLY One day God noticed a huge racket going on around a man in Italy. Day after day, this man hammered and chiseled away at stone; it was as if he had discovered something alive inside it and with determination and pas-sion he labored to set it free. From pieces of marble that he himself had chosen from the Carrara quarries, he set about “releasing” magnificent figures. Yet even God was surprised at what was emerging out of the stone this time. The man was trying to set God free! God went to visit the sculptor. “Michelangelo,” God said, “what exactly are you doing?” “Lord,” he answered, “I am setting you free, so everyone will recognize you, not only in this stone, but in all those who suffer unjustly and die violently at the hands of others and those who mourn for them. I don’t want people to forget what you did for us.” And the Lord spoke again to Michelangelo: “Hmm. In times past I have stayed in rocks and mountains, wells and tombs, and in the Ark of my Temple, but I don’t remember living in the stone you are working on now.” And Michelangelo answered, “Lord, as I see it, since your Son came to us, you don’t have to pick and choose your places of rest. He left your Holy Spirit everywhere; we just have to search it out, discover it, touch it, and reveal it to others.” The Lord was more than happy with what Michelangelo had said and left him to get back to work. Michelangelo chipped away at the huge piece of marble and slowly, very slowly, the sculptor set free the figure of a woman holding the body of her dead son in her lap. WE ARE CHANGING LIVES

SCREENS, HYMN BOOKS AND ELECTRONIC DEVICES

As you are aware, since the installation of our screens, we have dramatically reduced the number of “Breaking Bread” books. We encourage those with electronic devices to use them to access the readings and the prayers we use at

Mass. There are several apps for this; the USCCB app is the recommended one. Visit your App Store and search for USCCB. (Wi-Fi Code for Lourdes guest: 7277333606). Rather than distribute the “Breaking Bread” books across the church, we have now located them in Book Stands by Mary’s Statue and next to the Calming Room (Cry Room). If you require a book, please take it from one of the book stands and kindly return it after Mass. Thank you! You may also purchase the Sunday Missal in our gift shop.

PINELLAS HOPE DESSERTS Brownies Needed Monday, May 22

Thank you for providing desserts for the residents of Pinellas Hope; we are very grateful for your support! If you would like to bake or purchase brownies, please bring them in a disposable container to the Parish Office on Monday, May 22 between 9am-4pm.

IN OUR PARISH AND THE AREA

FORMED FEATURE OF THE WEEK

In 1917, three children named Lucia, Francisco and Jacinta experienced a great miracle. While herding a flock of sheep outside the tiny village of Fatima, Portugal, the Blessed Mother visited them, not once, but many times, telling the children great and wondrous secrets that would affect all of creation.

When the children tried to share the joyous news of Our Lady of Fatima, no one believed them, until the day the sun seemed to dance in the sky. It soon became clear that they had been chosen by the Blessed Mother to share her message.

The Day the Sun Danced is the inspiring true story of Lucia, Francisco and Jacinta, whose great faith and courage brought the message of Our Lady of Fatima to the entire world.

Check out more features at www.formed.org! PARISH CODE: 4M3GQG

PARKING LOT MAINTENANCE Maintenance work is underway on the campus parking lots and will continue through the end of May. It will include asphalt repair, sealing, and re-striping. This will require closing down sections

of the parking lots for short periods of time. Thank you for your patience while we do the necessary maintenance and repairs.

40 HOURS OF EXPOSITION Thursday, June 15 - Saturday, June 17

Sign ups and candle donations after all weekend Masses May 21 - June 4

Our Lady of Lourdes will be having 40 Hours of Exposition for the Feast of Corpus Christi beginning with Mass on Thursday, June 15 at 7pm, followed by the Exposition. The concluding liturgies begin at 9am on Saturday, June 17 and include Led Holy Hour, Procession, and Benediction. The traditional Catholic procession is a beautiful way for the RCIA and First Communicants, especially, to participate. Memorial candles will be offered for purchase and will be lit and displayed in honor or memory of loved ones. Their name will also be included on the Corpus Christi banner which will be displayed during the entire celebration. To make this glorious event a tremendous success, we will be in need of people to sign up for a one hour increment of prayer throughout the 40 hours. Please plan ahead as to the hour(s) you and your family will participate. All church ministries are asked to allocate times for their members as well. Sign-up sheets and candle donations are in the Narthex of the Church after weekend Masses May 21 - June 4 or you may contact Lisa at [email protected] or (727) 733-3606 to sign up. If you would like to volunteer to help with the 40 Hours devotion, please contact Lisa.
