These grants will be managed by the AKC CHF. A Request for Proposals (RFP) was issued in early May, 2017 in order to meet the timelines that will allow for funding decisions for schools to enter the residency match. This RFP includes a residency application link which details the questions and supporting documents necessary for submission. Applications received by June 14, 2017 will be reviewed by a panel which will return a decision by August 1, 2017. The first two residencies determined by this process will begin in July 2018. The Foundation is greatly appreciative to the AKC and AKC CHF for their insight and diligent effort necessary to bring this residency program to a structured and secure path. We applaud their commitment to invest in the training of theriogenologists who will ensure the health and well-being of purebred and purpose-bred dogs. And we hope that the spirit of partnership that started this residency program will extend to other opportunities which advance the discovery and management of canine reproductive health. Mission StatementThe Theriogenology Foundation is a global resource that supports education and research in reproductive medicine; ensuring that future generations of animals continue to enrich our lives through service, companionship, and food for a growing human population while conserving our natural resources.

Everyone’s talking about those Residents! When the AKC/TF Companion Animal Residency Program was first launched in 2014, it was an exciting boost to theriogenology. Residents succeeded in building their clinical/surgical repertoire, engaged in teaching/research and ultimately fulfilled the requirements necessary to achieve ACT diplomate status. Colleges reported increased caseloads to their teaching hospitals and expanded their community outreach to canine fanciers and breeders. But department heads clamored for better application guidelines and, due to a mismatch in budget cycles, universities were unable to coordinate with the VIRMP (Veterinary Internship & Residency Matching Program). We knew the concept was a home run, but it lacked the framework to sustain and succeed. So we fixed it.

We are pleased to report that we have received approval for funding for two AKC/AKC CHF/TF Theriogenology Residencies with an emphasis on canine medical genetics per year for the next three years (2018, 2019 and 2020). These grants will be managed by the AKC CHF. A Request for Proposals (RFP) was issued in early May, 2017 in order to meet the timelines that will allow

for funding decisions for schools to enter the residency match. And we hope

that the spirit of partnership that started this residency program will extend to other opportunities which advance the discovery and management of canine reproductive health.

I can assure you that none of this is fake news.

Thank you all for your continued enthusiasm for the Theriogenology Foundation!

Dr. Cliff Shipley Dr. Shipley was raised on a diversified farm in Southwest Iowa. He attended Northwest Missouri State University where he got his BS in Animal Science and then attended Iowa State University where he got his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree. He practiced in Northeast Iowa before going back to his hometown where he practiced for three years before taking a position at the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine. There he was the head of the ambulatory practice, and small ruminant and swine extension veterinarian for the state of Virginia. He subsequently relocated back to Iowa to manage a large swine operation and consult with a local feed company. Since 1991, he has taught veterinary medicine at the University of Illinois where he became board certified in theriogenology. He currently is the attending veterinarian for Agricultural Animals for the University of Illinois, teaches theriogenology,

consults with deer farmers across the country and has his own elk, whitetail deer and mule deer farm. He is currently on the board of directors for the North American Deer Farmers Association, an advisory board for Pneu-Dart, the Illinois Livestock Advisory Board and the scientific advisor for the Illinois Deer Farmers Association. He has presented talks nationally and internationally on cervidae. When not working he plants and attends to his trees, food plots and hunts!

Theriogenology Foundation Committees and Task Forces

Externship Grant Report - Elisha PerrinMy name is Elisha Perrin, and I am a fourth-year student at Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine. My career interests are in large animal medicine. I was awarded a student externship grant from the Theriogenology Foundation which I used to travel to Mill Creek Veterinary Services in Visalia, California. MCVS is a primarily dairy cattle practice that graciously hosts students from all over the world to allow them to be immersed in the life of a dairy cattle veterinarian.

While there, I gained extensive experience in the use of rectal palpation and ultrasound to diagnose pregnancy in dairy cattle. Every day I went on herd checks with one of the clinics 11 veterinarians. While there, I followed behind the vet and checked cows on my own. At herds where ultrasound was used to diagnose pregnancies, I used the ultrasound that I borrowed from BCF through their student loan program. In the afternoons, I would help in the clinic’s milk lab labeling samples and interpreting culture plates. I rode along on emergency calls as well where I helped with dystocias and fetotomies. Other calls included hernia repairs, a pneumonia outbreak at a feedlot, and developing protocols for calf raisers. This externship allowed me to build a foundation in dairy cattle reproduction that will serve me for the rest of my career, and I am extremely grateful to the Theriogenology Foundation for helping to make this opportunity reality.

Externship Grant Report - Russell MillerMy externship with Mobile Veterinary Practice (MVP) in Amarillo, Texas was focused on equine reproduction and medicine. During my four weeks, I worked directly with Dr. T.J. Barclay and Dr. Chris Morrow. The reproductive services that I was involved with included being able to palpate and ultrasound 10 mares, castrate five colts, collect 10 stallions, and assist with two cryptorchid surgeries. While at MVP, I had the opportunity to learn how to properly collect and ship equine semen by both cooled and cryopreservation techniques. Furthermore, this experience allowed for me to

participate in pre-purchase and breeding soundness exams.

This experience provided wonderful hands-on experience within equine reproductive industry. I am thankful to the veterinarians at Mobile Veterinary Practice for their patient and supportive encouragement as well as the Theriogenology Foundation for their consideration of my externship grant request.

You Choose How to GiveTF Donor RecognitionPlanned GivingPlanned Giving provides the opportunity to donate to the Foundation through your trust, will, and other assets as you choose, to leave a legacy for a cause you are passionate about. The “Plan-a Gift” section on the TF website is particularly helpful for guidance on gift options. There are giving options for all levels and numerous tools for choosing the gift that best suites your needs. An attorney’s counsel is also recommended.

Annual GivingYour yearly contribution can be used to sustain existing projects or spearhead new research to advance the science and practice of animal reproductive medicine. You determine your level of giving and direct your contribution towards education, research or achievement recognition. Every donation counts!

Honor GiftsHonor gifts serve as a meaningful way to recognize someone special while supporting the important work of the TF. Acknowledge the accomplishment of a friend or family member with an honor gift. Celebrate a special event, birthday or anniversary in the life of someone important to you. Make a tribute to an animal which has made an impact in the life of someone you know. A letter acknowledging your gift will be sent to the recipient.

Memorial GiftsA memorial gift can be made to recognize the loss of a beloved family member, friend or colleague. Memorial gifts pay tribute to the individual by affirming their passion for science, education and the continued advancement of knowledge in our specialty. The Foundation will notify a designated contact in writing to both acknowledge your donation and convey sympathy for their loss.

Corporate/Club GiftsCorporations and organizations may contribute to the Foundation’s general fund or may restrict their donation to champion a specific project or species.

Creative givingUse your creativity, motivation and commitment to launch a TF fundraising event through your hobby club, book club, sports team, office or service group. Share your personal achievements and passions for running, swimming, baking or biking by making it a fundraising event that includes friends and family.

Therio Raffle TicketsThe Annual Therio Raffle funds help support the TF and offers participants the opportunity to win a free registration to the next years’ Therio Conference, a three night hotel stay and event tickets. Only 200 tickets will be sold for $50 each. The drawing is held at the Therio Conference Awards Dinner, you do not have to be present to win. Available online anytime!

Administrative costs (office supplies, accounting and board meetings) totaled 5.2 percent and fundraising expenses (brochures, planned giving, postage, credit card, website fees on donations) were an additional 11.9 percent. These contributions keep the Foundation on track towards reaching our goals of expanding research and knowledge in the field of theriogenology. Your continued contributions will enable the Foundation to move forward with this work in future years.

Your tax deductible support and philanthropic investment brings us ever closer to the goals we have set for theriogenology and our Foundation. Donating to the Theriogenology FoundationDid you know that there are several ways that you can make a donation to the Theriogenology Foundation that will not affect your current lifestyle, or will even pay you an income? You can leave benefits from a Retirement Account, Life Insurance policy, real estate or personal property (collectibles, art, books). Take advantage of the many creative ways to benefit yourself, your beneficiaries and the Theriogenology Foundation while saving tax dollars in the process. Please take a moment to explore the Planned Giving page on the Theriogenology Foundation’s website, http://therio.plannedgiving.org. There are worksheets available and additional information to help you consider all of the options.
