Inside this issue:
From the Pastor’s Pen
Hello darkness, my old friend
I've come to talk with you again
Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in
my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence
Last month I had the opportunity
to attend the pastor's retreat in
Tucson. My roommate, a colleague
whom I've known for several years
is one who can talk all day long.
Obviously the word silence is not in
his vocabulary. Even though he
knows I joke about it, I really came
to appreciate the gift of silence, a
luxury I didn't have at the retreat.
As you may know Simon & Gar-
funkel wrote 'Sounds of Silence"
after the JFK tragedy and one
thing I have found very interesting
is that the common ambiance the
person and crowd are going through
is silence. At the end of every verse
you will find a comma in a form of
silence. Silence, something not very
popular in our culture, not even in
our texting, email, twitter world
killing silence with the click click of
our thumbs and fingers. We even
have degraded it in our relation-
ships when we call it the "silent
treatment".
One of my favorite theologians,
Richard Rohr says that "God is al-
ways found at the depths, even the
depths of our sin and brokenness.
And in the depth, it is silent." It is
March 2013
in the silence that we really know who we
are, we come to terms with ourselves. It
is in the silence that I find inspiration,
work on my sermons, my devotionals.
Rohr mentions also that "words are nec-
essarily dualistic. That is their function.
They distinguish this from that, and
that's good. But silence has the wonderful
ability to not need to distinguish this
from that! It can hold them together in a
quiet, tantric embrace. Silence, especially
loving silence, is always non dual, and
that is much of its secret power. It stays
with mystery, holds tensions, absorbs
contradictions, and smiles at paradoxes-
leaving them unresolved and happily
so." (Sojourners March 2013. Vol. 42, No.
3)
During Jesus trial before the Sanhedrin,
he remained silent. For me it is intri-
guing why Jesus gave the "silent treat-
ment" to the priests? Is he fulfilling the
Isaiah 53:7 prophecy?Or is he trying to
refrain himself of saying something he
shouldn't? After all he is part human He
could ask God to annihilate Pilate, the
roman soldiers and priest! Or is it that in
the sound of silence he is trying not to
distinguish what his enemies are yelling,
but to hold those words together in a
"quiet, tantric embrace", trying to find
strength? Is he trying to hold the tension
in that silence, to stay with mystery and
to smile at the paradox he faces? So, I in-
vite you for this second half of Lent and
Easter to invite silence in your life. Who
knows? Maybe God can give you a vision,
"softly creeping" and leaving its "seed"
through silence.
Peace
Pastor Javier

Lay Leader’s Corner
By
Chris Spencer
I am constantly amazed at what I don’t know. A
few Saturdays ago I participated in Central East
District’s training for church leaders. In the
morning I went to a workshop for Lay Leaders
and in the afternoon I decided to venture out of
my comfort zone and attend Social Media. I felt
so proud when I introduced myself saying I have
a laptop, use an Iphone and use an Ipad. I get
around in the internet and Facebook fairly easi-
ly. Then I glanced around the room at the
“younger” participants in their 40’s and learned
they design websites, write blogs, and tweet on
twitter. I sank back a bit in my chair.
I did learn that twitter is the noun and tweet is
the verb – what you do on twitter is tweet! And
tweets should be less than 140 words. And Face-
book is almost a thing of the past as new social
media is “out there” now. I learned that blog is
short for web log and one writes on their blog
site. Blogspot and tumblr make it easier for you
to follow other people’s blogs (their comments
and opinions.) Blogs should not be more than
500 words and pastors are encouraged to have
them on the church’s website. Then one partici-
pant asked the leader about something called
hashtags and I decided I might have reached my
brain limit at the moment. I must say it was a
challenging and inspiring hour and a half work-
shop.
Now if you are still with me, read on. This event
started me thinking about how much we all need
to learn to communicate with the younger crowd.
How do we attract our grandchildren to our church?
Should we tweet each other across the aisles about
what the pastor is preaching, kind of like saying
amen or hallelujah? Should we text one another dur-
ing the service? Should we show more youtube vide-
os?
And should we talk about our music? Did you hear
the joke about the man who would change everything
for his granddaughter except his music? I read re-
cently about a man who was a classical music lover
and soloist and was asked why he sang in the praise
band? He replied he couldn’t stand the music, but he
would do it to attract new people.
For those of you who regularly use the internet, have
you checked out our church website at http://
www.paysonumc.com? Pictures of our activities are
regularly updated. Check and see if your picture is
there! Ana Marie Mower updates the church calen-
dar every week, so if you miss a Sunday service, you
can catch up our events for the week on the website.
Discussions have also been taking place about offer-
ing the option of the newsletter on our website or
sent out by email to cut paper, ink and mailing costs.
Several of you have responded yes on a survey; that
you think this is a great idea. Some of you want to
continue receiving the paper version of the newslet-
ter. Why not do all three? Snail mail, email and in-
ternet! Would it be helpful and would you attend if
our church offered a class on how to use the internet?
Or how to do email?
I have much to learn and this keeps my brain a bit
sharper. I know I must continually challenge myself.
How about you?
Thank You
Bud Collette would like to thank the congregation and other friends and family who came to
Jean’s memorial service and lunch. He really appreciates the love and support he has received
during this difficult time. He would also like to thank the ladies who worked so hard to prepare the
lunch following Jean’s service.
Marian Crevar would like to thank everyone for their prayers and support during her recent
surgery.

BOOK TALK
How Coffee Saved my Life by Ellie Roscher
This new book in the category of Education for Mission is by a young woman age 25, a self described
rich, white North American and overachiever, who decided to spend a year in Lascano, Uruguay. She
reveals her physical and emotional struggles and how, though spiritually tried and tested, she eventual-
ly flourished beautifully. She discovers that God has accompanied her all along the journey. This poign-
ant memoir shows much wisdom from such a young soul.
MUNCHIES FOR THE MILITARY
DeEtta Maloney invites us to participate in a program with Presbyterian women. "Munchies for the
Military" are sent to members of our military stationed in Afghanistan who do not receive packages from
home. This is how it works:
• You bake cookies, cookie bars, breads like pumpkin bread, banana bread, etc., and brownies (NOTE:
Chocolate from November to March only)
• Put them in a plastic bag and mark on the bag: FOR THE MILITARY.
• Deliver them to the Presbyterian Church kitchen by noon on the 3rd Thursday of each month or call
Judi Tennien, at (928) 300-9396 for pickup.
It is that easy. This is not a monthly commitment, just when it is convenient for you. Imagine the joy of
receiving homemade treats from someone you don't know back in America? It is a way for us to let our
guys and gals know we remember them, appreciate them and want to give them a little-bit-of-home.
UMW Rummage Sale will be Friday, May 3 and Saturday, May 4. Clean out those basements,
garages, and closets and save items for our sale. If you have questions, contact Sue Bernhardt or DeEtta
Maloney.
* Date change for the May All Daughter’s tea. It will be the first Wednesday in May, 5/1/2013

FRAN DAY (Friends, Relatives, Associates and Neighbors)
What is FRAN day? It is a coordinated effort within the congregation in which all participants are en-
couraged and motivated to bring at least one guest to church. This will take place on Easter Sunday
March 31 at our three services (Sunrise 6:00 am, Informal 8:30am and Traditional 11:00am). You
choose a service you want to invite the person. We will have food, coffee, tea, fruit and pastries after
sunrise and between informal and traditional services.
On March 3rd, you will find information about FRAN in your bulletins and on Sunday March 10 there
will be an insert in the bulletin that requests your first name (who will be inviting) and the names
and addresses of the people who you are inviting. By Sunday March 24 you have to return those
names in. On March 25th we will be mailing those people you invited to our FRAN day. And on the
same day (March 25th) we will be praying for those people. The church grows the most by invitation,
so get involved in FRAN day.
