Gospel SummaryFrom time to time our children live in a “me first world,” but Jesus wasn’t too impressed with the self-centeredness of the Pharisee in today’s Gospel. The Pharisee was quite certain that he was a good and righteous man–better than most. For sure, he was better than the tax collector. But as Jesus often did in his teachings, he turned society’s ideas upside down. It was really the humble tax collector recognizing his own sinfulness that Jesus said would be exalted.Refl ection for ParentsWe are very important in the lives of our children, but do we allow them to see us walk humbly with God? Do we allow them to see us on our knees and hear us admit our weaknesses to God? Consider how you might represent the tax collector to your children. How might they see you like this Pharisee?Bringing the Gospel into Your FamilyPrayer is an important part of this scripture. With your child(ren), create a prayer space in your home. Allow them to place objects they find appropriate such as candles, the Bible, pictures, fabric, figures and other items. Use the space together every day.Discussion StartersI was especially humble before God in prayer when . . .I know I’m not a perfect parent and I need God’s help to . . .One time I was like the Pharisee when . . .Questions of the Week

Adults: When have you felt self-satisfied in observing the mistakes of others? What should we remember at such times?Children: Have you ever thought you were better than someone else? What is the problem with such thoughts?

Refl ection and questions from RCL Benziger. http://rclblectionary.com

Ways to grow your children in faith while at the store. (This continued series is from Making Faith Fun by Amy Viets, ACTA Publishing). While you wait. (This next series is ideas for all those times of waiting – in

line at the grocery store, in the waiting room at the doctor’s office, at sports practice…)Body part inventory (probably especially appropriate as you wait at the doctor’s office). Talk about the different body parts and relate them to Jesus (eyes – Jesus healed the eyes of blind Bartimeus, toes – Jesus wore sandals so his toes probably got dirty…) Whatever you think of is a way of keeping Jesus in the forefront of your child’s mind.

We meet for FFF this weekend. See you there!

Help Needed with Sacred LinensThere are many ministries in the Church that meet the needs of our parish. Some are very public, such as singing in the choir or serving as Lector. Some are done behind the scenes such as counting the the weekly collection or cleaning the church.

One of these unseen ministries that needs more helpers is the washing of sacred linens used on the altar at Mass. The work is done in your own home, takes a few hours about every other month. It requires access to a

washing machine and iron. This is an equal-opportunity volunteer position...All are invited to join this ministy! If you would like to help with this or any other ministry, please contact the parish office at 805-781-8220. Thank you for your willingness to serve our parish.
