Founding History Mission San Gabriel
Arcángel was founded by Father Junipero Serra on September 8th 1771
It is the 4th of the 21 missions
It is named after Gabriel, The Holy Prince of Archangels
The nickname of the mission is Pride of The Missions
Missionaries from San Gabriel guided the development Church of our Lady of the Angels at the pueblo de Los Angeles, founded in 1781.
Location Located nine miles away
from down town Los Angeles San Gabriel sat astride three
prominent trails It is located at the
intersection of Mission Boulevard and Junipéro Serra Avenue
The mission is found in the city of San Gabriel
Settlers, military expeditions, and travelers often stay at the mission

Take a Stand
The mission system started in 1769 and ended in 1834. The Spanish missionaries wanted to spread Christianity around California, so the Native Americans had to forget their culture .First , the Native Americans had to follow a strict schedule by waking up when the bells rang. They had to believe in Christianity otherwise the Native Americans were severely punished. Lastly , the Native Americans were infected with many deadly diseases.
