Pastoral Ponderings
by Rev. Ross Varney
Dear Friends,
The old adage to keep newspaper in one hand and Bible in the other is tough to follow
in an incendiary political climate, but it’s near impossible to avoid PATRIOTS news in
Massachusetts. Maybe the collective hysteria over the Brady-Belichek dynasty will give us
a needed respite from politics, an escape and a uniting around some common hope and
dream; winning the big game!
Actually my job to find Bible relevance is rather easy in this case. In the New
Testament, Paul often uses imagery from sports to make his case for the spiritual life. The
most famous verse is probably in his letter to the Hebrews, Chapter 12:1: “Let us run with
perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our
faith…” Besides running, he talks about boxing and the practice and discipline that it
takes. (1Corinthians 9:25: “Every athlete exercises self-control in all things…… I do not
run aimlessly, nor do I box as one beating the air).
So my pitch, with Paul, is to think of the efforts we go to for physical well being, and
consider how we could be doing the same thing for our spiritual well being. The Boston
area news is spending enormous amounts of effort to let us know that the Patriots still do
many practices and drills, that their success is due in part to a great work ethic, a continued
focus on basic skills, physically and mentally.
What Paul advocated then is not much different from what we need now. Following
Christ and our own better angels is often an uphill climb. It is tempting to give in to
negativity, death and decay. Let’s move ahead with faith, trusting that "looking to Jesus as
pioneer" (disciplined focus on Christ as head of the church) will always keep us on a good
and productive spiritual path.
