LEADERSHIPDoing what is necessary

“Leadership” is a concept we often resist. It seems immodest, even self-aggrandizing, to think of ourselves as leaders. But if it is true that we are made for community, then leadership is everyone’s vocation, and it can be an evasion to insist that it is not… everyone follows and everyone leads.

> Palmer, Parker J. (2000). Let your Life Speak

LEADERSHIPDoing what is necessary

The only guidance we can get on the inner journey

comes through relationships in which others can help us

discern our leadings.

~Parker Palmer, A Hidden Wholeness

LEADERSHIPDoing what is necessary

This is a story about four people named Somebody, Everybody, Anybody, and Nobody. There was an important job to be done.

Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it, but Nobody did. Somebody got angry about it because it was Everybody’s job. Everybody thought Anybody could do it. Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn’t do it.

It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

LEADERSHIPDoing what is necessary

• Always pretend to know more than everyone around you.• Put up barriers between departments.• Ask for a 200 page document to justify every new idea.• Call lots of meetings.• Place the biggest emphasis on the budget.

LEADERSHIP: Doing what is necessary

What are 3 or 4 or 5 words or phrasesthat express leadership in the courts?

How does leadership relate to mission?

How do you lead? How have you seen others lead?

LEADERSHIP AND SERVICE

We must be silent before we can listen. We must listen before we can learn. We must learn before we can prepare. We must prepare before we can serve. We must serve before we can lead.

William Arthur Ward as quoted in Leadership . . . with a human touch.

June 1,1999. p.11.

"I don't know what your destiny will be, but one thing I know: The ones among you who will be really happy are those who have sought and found how to serve.“

Albert Schweitzer

SERVICE THROUGH TACTICS AND STRATEGIES

The right strategy makes any tactic work better. The right strategy puts less pressure on executing your tactics perfectly.

Seth Godin, January 04, 2007

"Strategy is doing the right things, tactics is doing things right."

Peter Drucker

When you next hire a new employee, decide whether that employee would do a strategic or a tactical job

• A responsibility to take care of something owned by someone else.

• The individual’s responsibility to manage his [or her] life and property with proper regard to the rights of others.
