God’s plentiful harvest fields are in faraway lands and within the Eastern North Dakota Synod. Our ELCA missionaries continue to make a world of difference in answering our Lord’s call to go out into God’s harvest field. Our ELCA missionaries, alongside our global neighbors, strengthen medical ministries, preach the good news, equip pastors, help build churches and advocate for the poor. Thanks be to God for the congregations in our synod who sponsor our global ELCA missionaries. Thanks be to God for our companion synod relationship with the Central African Republic and for our synod’s Global Mission Committee.

Thanks be to God too for the harvest fields that are right outside our front and back door and for our synod missionaries. A new opportunity is being provided for every congregation in our synod to sponsor a synod missionary in 2012 and beyond. The hope is that every congregation will sponsor a global ELCA missionary and a synod missionary. Missionary sponsors – congregations, women’s groups, organizations, individuals and families can join hands with our missionaries, helping to make the ministries in God’s harvest field possible. This folder provides the names of our synod missionaries, their harvest fields, and in what ways you can become a sponsor.

Jesus said: Jesus said: Jesus said: The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.” ~ Matthew 10:37-38

The Sudanese Lutheran community is worshipping weekly at a building in south Fargo called The Gathering. They are growing and have potential for further growth. Jacob Mayen is serving as the Lay Minister. The Sudanese Lutheran community is longing to share the gospel with even more of the estimated 2,000 Sudanese people residing in the FM area.

Mission Partner support from other congregations will encourage the Sudanese Lutheran community to grow outward and to enable Jacob to serve in a fuller capacity as a lay minister while he accomplishes his seminary education through the TEEM (Theological Education for Emerging Ministries) program.

Rev. Larry Thiele serves Dacotah O`Yate Lutheran Church on the Spirit Lake Nation. He serves to further reconciliation efforts between the Dacotah people and Christianity, and restore the relationship with God and the Dacotah people through the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Larry began serving Dacotah O`Yate as a Synodically Authorized Minister in 2002 and was recently ordained as a pastor in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

Rev. Larry Thiele Dacotah O’Yate

“We, the baptized members of Dacotah O`Yate Lutheran Church, believe that we are called to respond in faith to the call of the Holy Spirit to carry out God’s mission of salvation through Jesus Christ by the preaching and teaching of the Word of God, administering the Sacraments, witnessing, and reaching out to the unreached people in the community.”

"My ministry is not contained within the four walls of my office. My ministry reaches into the Dinka Community, the community of Fargo-Moorhead, and across the globe to Africa.”

The Project F-M makes a space for 20/30-somethings in the Fargo-Moorhead area who are not connected to a faith community. The Project F-M, creates opportunities for young adults to bring their questions about faith, God, spirituality, and church.

In 1982, a group of Lutheran Christians was invited by the State Industrial School (now known as the North Dakota Youth Correctional Center) to worship every Sunday with the youth on campus. A mission was born as well as a church! Heart River Lutheran Church has been worshipping with the youth at NDYCC for over 30 years now, involving them in nearly every aspect of communal worship life, as they serve as readers, communion assistants, musicians, and ushers. Since the youth are unable to continue to worship with Heart River after they are released, this led the congregation into discernment as to how they might best continue to support the youth in their faith journey and in their lives after they leave campus. Thus, the local and statewide re-entry ministry of Heart River Bridges of Hope was created:

Heart River Bridges of Hope is an outreach and re-entry ministry on behalf of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and the whole Church. As an expression of God’s grace and love, this ministry will provide youth opportunities for community worship, mentorship, wellness, and mutually enriching relationships. Trusting and believing that God heals and creates new life, our intent is to accompany and empower youth toward a future with hope.

Since young people from all over the state end up at NDYCC and return to all corners of the state as well, Heart River Bridges of Hope seeks to work with faith communities wherever youth may be returning. Q: Q: Q: Why sponsor a synod missionary?

A: A: A: Sponsors of our ELCA missionaries globally and locally have

experienced renewal personally and congregationally as a result of sponsorship. Through daily prayer, frequent communication and the occasional “missionary visit,” there is a sharing of each other’s stories, joys, burdens and gifts.

Q: Q: Q: What does missionary sponsorship pay for?

A: A: A: It is only with generous support from congregations, ministry

organizations, and individuals that our synod missionary support covers housing, health insurance, training, compensation to support the missionary and his/her family as they serve full time on our behalf, etc.

Q: Q: Q: How can I be a sponsor?

A: A: A: E-mail [email protected] to receive more information on synod

missionaries and their mission field.

Complete the EaND Synod Missionary Sponsorship form on the back page of this booklet and return it to the Eastern North Dakota Synod office.
