  • M I S S I O N C R I T I C A LGenerators for data centres COMBROPOW002_A 11/2018

  • The unprecedent growth of IoT and big data is changing the way we store, handle and analyse a vast amount of data. Hyperscale data centres and campus models that offer cross-connection between customers and their networks / cloud computing platforms are experiencing significant momentum. As a consequence, the constant flow of data is becoming an imperative for all data centre operators, in turn driving a greater need for reliable energy facilities to power the equiment continuously and in the event of a power outage or emergency.

Technology is a key requirement in many industries and data centres are perhaps the most critical area in an age where each computer, mobile and application is data dependent.

  • DATA CENTRE BACK-UP POWER

The new future-proof data centres have more stringent requirements that offer an optimal solution for back-up power that guarantees business continuity.

Increasing server densities and associated heat generation fuel the drive for greater efficiency

Increased availability and uptime needed as defined by uptime institute*

Visibility and control through monitoring system parameters

*The Uptime Institute defines four levels of Tier standards, ranging from a basicinfrastructure with no redundancies (Tier I: 1729 minutes maximum annualdowntime), to a fault tolerant site infrastructure (Tier IV: 26 minutes maximumannual downtime)

The power path is composed by a rectifier that converts the incoming utility AC current to DC, in order to charge a battery system, and an inverter that converts DC back to supply the IT load. The system provides temporary power via its batteries when the utility system fails, and then transfers the critical load to a stand by generator that supplements power for longer outages.

    • UPS modules can be added in small increments as the load demands grow

    • Dedicated cooling system due to UPS energy losses

    • Installed inside the building

    • Exclusively static in the range 20 – 500 kW

    Static UPS

When utility power is lost, the dynamic UPS retrieves stored kinetic energy from its cinetic energy accumulator to support the critical load, until the diesel engine takes over in cases of utility power failure.

    • No power electronics, synchronous machine transferring input voltage

    • No air conditioning requirement, only ventilation

    • High energy efficiency

    • High fixed losses to power flywheels, controls and auxiliaries

    • Space / weight savings

    • Installed outside or in special enclosures

    • Starting generally from 500 kW

  • Marelli Motori has unmatched industry expertise in data centre applications by supporting end-users, system integrators and genset makers, from the early design stage to field monitoring. Our extensive experience, coupled with a long collaboration with many major diesel and gas engine makers, has allowed Marelli Motori to reach outstanding levels of product performance and reliability.

We design and manufacture synchronous generators that meet the most demanding and stringent data centre requirements: • Low Voltage up to 6.500 kVA (MJB series) • Medium / High Voltage up to 14.000 kVA (MJH series) Alternators are, in fact, key elements in such a critical environment: the winding must maintain low values of harmonic distortion and interference with telecommunications; the power supply to the AVR should be independent from unexpected sudden loads, and special arrangements should be taken for the insulation and enclosure in case of high levels of humidity.

    MJH 50 / 60 1.000 - 15.000 500 - 12.500

Our MJB and MJH series have special features that perfectly match the standard market requirements, from the reinforced mechanical structure and state of the art winding / impregnation technology, to the PMG excitation system and terminal box configuration. All products can also be fully customised to meet specific needs such as extreme environmental conditions.

  • MECHANICAL FEATURES

    • Reinforced construction to withstand high vibration levels• Single or double bearing configuration• Form or random wound• Second shaft extension (UPS dynamic systems)• External ventilation system to increase efficiency

    REACTANCES

Subtransient reactance is a factor that influences the maximum peak during short circuits. Low values are crucial to minimise harmonics and consequently limit the voltage distortion. However, sometimes customers may require high values in order to minimise the cost of razing short circuits.Marelli Motori specialises in designing alternators with fully tailored values of subtransient reactance depending on specific project requirements.

    INSULATION SYSTEM

Marelli Motori has developed multiple VPI insulation systems and, according to specific project requirements, can select the optimised design and manufacturing process, in order to reach maximum generator performance. After impregnation, a further protective treatment is applied, making the generators suitable for harsh environmental conditions, such as high temperature and level of humidity.

    MAIN FEATURES

    WINDING

Expert winding design enhances voltage waveform and minimises values of harmonic distortion and interference with telecommunications. Maximum quality standard is further guaranteed by the new automated department for coil manufacturing & insulation.

    • Fully tailored reactances• High power density• Winding protection against harsh external atmosphere• THD < 2% - TIF < 50 - THF < 2% (no-load values)• Radio Interference according to Class B Group 1 as per

    EN55011

    TERMINAL BOXES

    • Large terminal box with multi-direction cable entry and customised arrangements

    • Separate terminal boxes (main phases, neutral, heaters, PT100 and auxiliaries) to facilitate installation and maintenance activities

    7

  • Our alternators are designed and manufactured in Arzignano (Italy) where we achieve the highest quality standard through continuous investment in R&D and production technologies. Our high quality standards in all areas of our operations are third party certified to ensure outstanding product quality, allied to best-in-class service performance with minimal environmental impact.

    OPTIONALS

    • Anti-condensation heaters• Temperature monitoring• Measurement and protection current transformers• Auxiliary winding or varicomp as over-boosting• Redundant AVR system• IP protection through air filters• Insulated bearings and grounding device• PMG heavy loads starting

    AVRS

Analogic AVR are specifically designed by Marelli Motori to maximise alternator performances, keeping the voltage accuracy at values within 0.5% of nominal. The 100% fully proprietary Marelli Motori digital AVR can achieve even 0.25% accuracy. They are all protected against moisture, salt, sand and corrosive environments.

    MANUFACTURING EXCELLENCE

    PMG EXCITATION

PMG is an option available for all our generators to guarantee an independent power supply for the excitation system. The PMG ensures a three phase short-circuit current (Icc) three times higher than the rated current (In) and makes the excitation system itself less sensitive to voltage waveform distortion. It also guarantees a constant voltage, even with high non-linear loads.

    • Heavy loads starting• Independent AVR feeding• No influence due to voltage waveform distortion• Reduced influence from non-linear loads• Different feeding voltages according to AVR

    • 0.95 lead to 0.9 lagging pf operation• 0.9 lead to 0.8 lagging pf operation (extreme conditions)• Harmonic Voltage Distortion
