your hospital and serving you...our community.
We work for you.

Cottage Hospital
had a combina-
tion of progress,
opportunity and
challenges for
2009. Through it
all we stayed focused on you, our
community, and bringing you the
quality healthcare that you expect
and deserve.
This year we implemented an Elec-
tronic Medication Administration
Record, this will reduce the potential
of medication errors and allow a more
efficient process. Looking toward the
future, we will focus on Computerized
Provider Order Entry, this will allow
the physician to directly order patient
medications from a number of
different locations, eliminating chance
of a medication error. With the closure
of this electronic loop, we will have
reached a national safety goal!
We also dramatically improved our
Core Measures performance this year.
New Hampshire ranks number one in
the country for compliance with the
Quality of Core Measures, and Cottage
Hospital’s performance is equal to or
better than New Hampshire. You can
view how Cottage is doing by going to
the bottom of our website and clicking
on the NH Quality Care link.
We did not fare particularly well
financially this year. We believe the
general economy and unemployment
rate has caused many people to be
uninsured, and newly designed
insurance plans with high co-pays and
deductibles have had an impact on our
bottom line. Our volume this year was
essentially static on in-patient admis-
sions and there was a decrease in our
out-patient services. This problem was
not unique to Cottage and we echoed
what was happening nationally. Last
year approximately one-third of U.S.
hospitals were in the red, and as this
year closes, the American Hospital
Association reports that the number
will jump to fifty percent.
During the course of the year, we also
implemented the electronic record
portion of the Quality program, which
enables our Quality department to know
how we are doing with Core Measures
and other Quality data in “real time”.
With the completion of CPOE and the
determination from the federal govern-
ment as to what “meaningful use” of
this healthcare electronic information
is, Cottage will have completed the
federal
requirements
for electronic
health records
ahead of most
other hospi-
tals. I believe
we will meet
our goal of
achieving a full Electronic Health
Record within the year.
All of these factors are driving the
current push by the government for
healthcare reform. Reform will impact
the hospital strategically and financially
more than any previous legislation.
Some challenges facing us in 2010 will
be to incorporate additional Quality
Core Measures required by CMS and the
additional reporting required by our own
state agencies. These types of directives
are another way that we can work to
increase transparency in healthcare.
Our Goals for the upcoming year are
to implement Telepsychiatry, which
will allow patients in our Emergency
Department to have access to White
Mountain Mental Health via computer
connection. We are also actively
engaged in looking at Teledermatol-
ogy, as this is a very needed service,
given the lack of dermatologists in the
North Country.
This year there will be a number of
changes on the Board and the
corporate members will be asked to
vote on several new Board members.
There appears to be a lot of talent
among these individuals.
Cottage Hospital will also see some
transitions in the management team
as we have hired a new Medical
Surgical & Pediatric Director, Holly
McCormack. Maria Ryan our current
COO/CNO, will transition into my role
as Chief Executive Officer.
Looking ahead, the Strategic Planning
Committee will bring in a Consultant
Group to help Cottage face future
issues. Now, more than ever, we’re
going to need the engagement of the
medical staff, the community, and the
hospital management to plot a course
for the future. In this light, Cottage
Hospital joined the New England
Alliance for Health. The intent of this
organization is twofold: first, as a
group purchasing organization, and it
is anticipated
that Cottage
will save
thousands of
dollars. More
importantly,
however, this
group is also
involved in a strategic view of the
Upper Valley, including both VT and
NH hospitals, including Dartmouth
Hitchcock Medical Center. We all
believe that the healthcare market is
starting to consolidate and Cottage
wants to be collaborating with our
partners as we begin to look at how
we’re going to be providing care
regionally, and ultimately, to you as
the community that we serve.
As a final note, this will be my last
written report and I want to thank the
corporate members and the commu-
nity, as it has been a true privilege and
honor to have served this community
for the last seventeen years.

VOLUNTEER REPORT
2009 Volunteers:
The mission of the Cottage Hospital Auxiliary is to support and enhance the hospital and its facilities and services.
The Auxiliary continued their various fund raisers. One of the most enjoyable is talk-
ing with travelers at the Interstate 91 Rest Stop, while providing coffee and treats.
A donation jar is available and people are wonderful, frequently putting in far more
than the value of the snacks they choose.
Other fundraisers included: Our Books Are Fun Sales, The Easter Dinner Basket
Raffle, a Thanksgiving Bake Sale, and the Christmas Memory Tree. Each year, we also
make Christmas Stockings big enough to take a newborn home in and the first baby
born each January receives a basket of useful items for baby and parents.
Our biggest fundraiser was our 7th Annual Golf Tournament netting $3,300 that we
donated to the Cottage Hospital Annual Appeal. We had a full field of sixteen teams;
and every tee and green was sponsored. Many gift certificates, rounds of golf, and
prizes were donated. We are grateful to Lisbon Village Country Club and the gener-
ous businesses and players who supported this event.
Each year Cottage Hospital hosts various events to raise money
and awareness for the hospital. This gives us an opportunity to raise
money for much needed equipment and also educate the community
on a variety of health topics!
In April we hosted the 18th Annual Cottage Hospital Variety Show. The
money raised from this event helped us purchase a Cardiac Monitor for
our Emergency Department.
September welcomed the 19th Annual Cottage Hospital Walk-A-Thon and
Road Race. This event was a huge success with over almost 200 partici-
pants and raising over $15,000 for the purchase of a portable ventilator.
We also were busy this year getting involved in our community and
working to educate you on healthy lifestyles. We were excited to con-
tinue our Cottage Corner Column with The Bridge Weekly Sho-Case,
set up a booth at the North Haverhill Fair and we even found time to
get into your grocery carts with our dietary staff doing presentations
at our local Shaws Supermarket.
