I- Presentation of the company
A – STOROpack international company
STOROpack is a German company founded in 1874 by J. REICHENECKER, and specialized in protective
packaging. The company is divided in two divisions:
- Molding division: This division makes technical parts in EPS (Expanded PolyStyrene) and EPP
(Expanded PolyPropylene) for customers of car industry, food industry, and building. Molding
division is present in Europe and Asia. I work in this division in France.
- Packaging division: This division design and manufacture machines and systems which are
implant in the process of customers to make flexible packaging to protect some products.
Plants of Packaging division are in North America and Europe. I did my mission abroad in this
division on two plants of STOROpack North America.
Composed of eighteen plants, STOROpack North America is present in a lot of states of USA and in
Canada (Toronto), as you can see on the map below.

1- Cincinnati Service Center
The team of service center is managing by Mr. FLOCK who supervised my mission in service center.
The role of service center is to renovate old machine and to adapt them for the needs of the
customers.
The machines are using to make flexible packaging. They are integrating in the process of customers
in various applications (food industry, commerce website…). There are 3 types of machines:
- The range Paperplus®: this type of machine
transforms paper rolls into packaging material
for any application from speedy light-weight
filler to strong cushioning pads.
- The range Airplus®: Airplus® machine fill in
patterned film with air to make some “Bubbles”
who can protect the products.
- The range Foamplus®: this machine product
foam by the mix of 2 chemical products.
2- Cincinnati Distribution Center
Mr. Mouk manages the team of distribution center and
supervised my mission at distribution center. This plant
product and ship the rolls of paper and film for Paperplus®
and Airplus® machines.
Airplus film is making from beans of plastic transform with
a blow film extrusion to master roll. Paper is receiving in
master roll. Master rolls are unrolling and transform in
small rolls then they are storing before shipping.

B – Description of the actual organization
Service Center was dividing in different areas for
posts of machines’ modifications or for storage.
You can see on the map of the next page the old
organization of the factory at the beginning of the
project.
Legend of the map below:
1 – 3 posts of PAPERplus classic’s preparation
2 – 2 posts of FOAMplus’ preparation
3 – Painting area for machines

C – Focus and Study
The goal of my mission was to reduce the time necessary to prepare one PAPERplus classic’s
machine to begin and other machine if I had time to do it. Mr. Flock thanks that the preparation of
one machine is too long and he wants that the process will be more efficient. To understand the
process I spent 2 or 3 days to work with technicians and write all the moves and operations did by
the technicians, and the time necessary to did it.
After these days I did a VSM (Value Stream Mapping or nicknamed “Spaghetti diagram”).The VSM is
a drawing of all the moves on a map of the factory (you can see it below). On this map you can see
the flows to make just one Paperplus machine. We can’t see all the flows because they are too many.
To improve the efficiency of Paperplus classic’s process, I use the advices and wishes of Mr. Flock
who was inspired by the process of a German plant, goals were:
- To reorganize the factory to decrease moves which are waste of time. The VSM is a good
tool to show that the actual organization needs to be improved.
- To store the parts and tools necessary for the technicians near his post. Before the study
technicians spent lot of time in warehouse to found the good parts because the parts of all
types of machines are mixed in the warehouse.
- To dispatch tasks of the process on different posts. Before the study one technician did all
the preparation of a machine from paint drying until crating. With that new organization it’s
not necessary to have all tools and parts to prepare a machine one each post and the
production is in line.

D – New process of Paperplus
On next page you can see the new Paperplus classic process that I designed with production team.
The process will be composing of two lines of 3 or 4 posts. Lines are separate by table which will be
use by technicians to work. On both side of the process parts necessary will be arrange on racks. On
each side two or three persons can work, the new process is adjustable.
First solution – Team of 4 persons:
• 2 technicians (one on each side) disassembly and clean machine, and reassembly parts of
cut, advance, forming and electric function
• 2 technicians (one on each side) assembly parts for protection and unroll function, put
accessories, clean the machine and do all checking and test.
Second solution – Team of 5 persons:
• 2 technicians (one on each side) disassembly and clean machine, and reassembly parts of
cut, advance and forming function
• 2 technicians (one on each side) assembly parts for electric, protection and unroll function.
• 1 technician put accessories, cleans machine and do all checking and test for both line of the
process.
Third solution – Team of 6 persons:
• 2 technicians (one on each side) disassembly and clean machine, and reassembly parts of cut
and advance functions.
• 2 technicians (one on each side) assembly parts of forming, electric and protection
functions.
• 2 technicians (one on each side) assembly parts of unroll, put accessories, cleans machine
and do all checking and test.

Picture 10 : New PAPERplus' production line
After design of the new process I had to decide where each part must be stored. This stage of the
project was very long because there are a lot of different parts to store. I checked and dispatched all
parts with the help of Jamie (the inventory control). After dispatching I tried to organize each rack
with the parts necessary. I did a map of each rack on Excel to organize it and to verify if didn’t need
more space to store (see on next page).

The map below is a draw of the future organization of the service center. The crated area, Foamplus
area and Airplus area will be keeping. The Paperplus classic area, integration area, chevron area,
paper shooter area and machine storage will be move. All the tools to customize machine will be
gather in the painting area. The warehouse will be reduce, a lot of parts will dispatch on each post.

The future organization will decrease the moves as you can see on the example below with the
moves of Paperplus classic’s process

Dispatching of parts on each post can avoid a lot of moves for technicians and they don’t waste time
to walk from their posts to the warehouse. Furthermore it could be easier to found the part needed
with a less important choice of parts on the rack and only the parts necessary for the
concerned.
Cédric MARTINEAU – FIA 2011/2014

III- Second Mission:
A – Value Stream Mapping
I began my mission at distribution center by a VSM (Value Stream Mapping) like at service center.
To understand the flows of distribution center I worked 4 days with each team, film production and
paper production. You can see below the VSM of distribution center after observations of process. In
blue moves of Airplus rolls, in brown moves of Paperplus rolls. Big arrows for master rolls and little
one for little rolls. In green and yellow moves of technicians.
Picture 15 : PAPERplus and AIRplus films' flow
We can see that the organization of CDC is pretty good, we have only two ranges of products so it’s
not really difficult to organize the plant.

B – Suggestion of lay out for distribution center
After the Value Stream Mapping (VSM) of Distribution Center I drew a new map of the plant (as you
can see below). I moved the 6 AIRplus machine which are near the office. Behind AIRplus’ machines
I drew racks to store master rolls and other racks in front of the machines to store products before
shipping. I keep an aisle between the 12 twelve machines for the forklift. I keep Paperplus’ flow like
before.
Picture 16 : Suggestion of lay out for Cincinnati Distribution Center
This lay out could decrease moves but it will not increase production. The production speed is
influence by the speed of machines and not by the speed of the technicians or by their moves
(sometimes technicians were waiting that machines finished so they could spend time to move if
necessary).
Furthermore a lay out of the plant will be a big investment (to move big machine, to install power on
it).
But this lay out will be necessary for distribution center if they want to add new AIRplus’ machines to
increase production.
Cédric MARTINEAU – FIA 2011/2014
19
C – Other Suggestions
1- Point of observation
I suggest at the staff to install chairs or stools for
technicians of Airplus process:
• One technician works on 3 machines. It could be
a good idea to install a stool in front of his 3
machines to have good place to watch over the
end of cycle on each machine.
• To improve work conditions (12 hours to be
standing, it could be long).
2- To help Paperplus’ technicians
Airplus’ cycles (30 minutes) are longer than Paperplus’ cycles (30 seconds). During waiting time
Airplus’ technicians can help Paperplus’ technicians (who have less waiting time):
• Prepare, install master roll
• Prepare stickers, wooden pallet…
3- To have more shafts
Master rolls are support by shafts on each machine (Paperplus and Airplus). During the change of
master roll the technician spend a lot of time to take the shaft on old master roll and to put on the
new master roll.
To have more shafts could reduce the time
necessary to change the master roll:
• Technician could prepare next master
roll before the change.
• You don’t need to have 2 shafts by
machine, just one by machine + one
other for 3 machines (4 shafts = 3
machines).

4- Single Minute Exchange of Die (SMED)
Single-Minute Exchange of Die (SMED) is a method to reduce waste in a manufacturing process. It
provides a rapid and efficient way of converting a manufacturing process from running the current
product to running the next product. This rapid changeover is key to reducing production lot sizes
and thereby improving flow.
SMED could be a good tool to reduce the time of change of master roll. Before the study there
wasn’t a modus operandi to follow to change the master so the technician change the roll as he want
and the change time isn’t optimize.
I tried to write a modus operandi for the change of master roll:
Picture 19 : Modus operandi for the change of master roll with one shaft
And I wrote an other modus operandi for change with 2 shafts (see below):
Picture 20 : Modus operandi for the change of master roll with two shafts

IV- Presentation of the country
A – Cincinnati
Cincinnati is a pretty big city of Midwest of the USA. Located in the south of Ohio, Cincinnati is
nicknamed the Tri-State city because some boroughs of the city are in Kentucky (Newport) and
Indiana. The population was 300 000 only for the city and 2 140 000 for the metropolitan area in
2010 which was the 27th most populous area in USA.
The heart of Cincinnati located close to Ohio River on the north side is composing of the Downtown
with a lot of skyscrapers which are office for big companies like Kroger (supermarket), Great
American (insurance company), US Bank and Procter & Gamble (cosmetic product) which was
founded in Cincinnati. The most famous skyscraper is Carew Tower, this building of 574 feet (175 m.)
was completed in 1930. Carew Tower is the best place to see Cincinnati because you can go on top of
the building if you paid only 2 dollars and here you can see all the city and surroundings.
Picture 21 : View of Cincinnati from the top of Carew Tower
Between the river and the downtown there are the baseball arena, the football stadium and the
event arena for concert. The naming is very frequent in USA that’s why each arena have the name of
his major sponsor, for example the baseball arena is Great American Ball Park, the concert arena is
US Bank Arena.
In front of the downtown, on the other side of the river it’s the Kentucky and the borough of
Covington and Newport. Newport is a good place to spend time with family or friends, you can visit
the aquarium, eat at restaurant or drink a beer. Beers are a specialty of Cincinnati because the city
was founded by German people and each year Oktoberfest is celebrate at Foutain Square in the
Downtown.
The University of Cincinnati is located in the north of the city near the zoo. Sport’s teams of the
university are named Bearcats.

B – Trip and outing
1- Week end of Independence Day at Washington (July 4th-6th)
I spent the week-end of Independence Day in Washington. Washington is a city very different of the
other American cities, because there isn’t a downtown with tall and modern skyscrapers like in New
York City or Chicago.
I walked around the Mall. The Mall is a park which is considering like the center of the city. It is
surrounding by:
- Museums of the Smithsonian Institution (a powerful scientific institution famous in the
entire world). The nineteen museums of Smithsonian are free. I visited the most popular of
them (Air and Space Museum – 8 millions people per year visit it).
- Memorials like World War Memorial or Martin Luther King Memorial. The most famous is
Lincoln Memorial, it is on the stairs of this building that Martin Luther King said “I have a
dream”.
- Federal buildings like the white house where lives the president, US treasury, Ministry of
commerce, Federal Reserve.
- Famous buildings like Washington Monument or Capitol.
On the south of the city, I saw The Pentagon which is the headquarters of the US department of
defense. I visited too Alexandria a beautiful quarter on Potomac riverside where George Washington
liked to spend time to rest.
During the week-end there were a lot of events to celebrate Independence Day (fireworks, music
band, and barbecue on the mall).
2- Day at Cumberland Falls (July 14th)
Sometimes called “Little Niagara” or “Niagara of the South” the waterfalls of Cumberland tall 68
feet (21 meters). Cumberland Falls is locating in a state resort park of Kentucky near the city of
Corbin. It is a good place to do kayak, hiking camping and see beautiful landscape.
An uncommon phenomenon appears under full moon, a lunar rainbow or moonbow is sometimes
formed by the mist emanating from the falls.
I visited that place with 2 others students of CESI, we made picnic, hiking and kayak. After the visit
we stopped at Corbin to see the birthplace of restaurants KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken) famous in
the entire world.

3- Trip Cleveland – Niagara Falls (July 26th-28th)
I made a trip to Niagara Falls with my girlfriend. We spent the Friday night in Cleveland because the
trip to Niagara was very long (eight hours of road). We visited Cleveland on Friday evening, we saw
the Downtown on Erie lakeside, the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame museum and the harbor.
We arrived at Niagara at the beginning of afternoon on Saturday. We began our visit with “The cave
of the winds”. In that attraction you take an elevator to go down in the Niagara gorge to walk closer
of the falls. After “The cave of the winds”, we took a boat named “Maid of the mist” to go closer of
the falls.
In both attractions it’s necessary to wear a poncho to protect yourself against the water and the
mist. We come back the evening to take pictures of falls by night, they was lighting on different
colors, it was beautiful!
The Sunday morning we bought some gift and after we came back at Cincinnati. In road we took a
break at Cuyahoga Falls near Cleveland, it was pretty even if this waterfalls were more little than
Niagara.
4- Week end at King Island (August 3rd and 4th)
King Island is the largest amusement park of the Midwest of the USA. Located at the north of
Cincinnati near my hotel (10 miles approximately), it opened in 1972. In this park we can see a replica
of the Eiffel tower.
The park is divided in two parts, we spent the Saturday in Roller Coaster Park and the Sunday in
Water Park.
Cédric MARTINEAU – FIA 2011/2014
24
5- Week end at Chicago (August 9th-11th)
Nicknamed “Windy city” Chicago is the 3rd city of USA. It is an important place for business and
culture. There are a lot of things to do and to see in this city (monuments, museums). It’s not
possible to see all so we have try to see most important places.
We have used the city pass which is a ticket that you can use in major monuments when spend few
time in the city (until 9 days). With this pass you have a discount of 50% on 5 visits and you don’t
need to spend time in wait queue. With the pass we visited:
- John Hancock Observatory: On the top of this tower you have the most beautiful place to
see Chicago. We saw the sunset on the Friday.
- Willis Tower: The ninth tallest building in the world, you can take the elevator to go at the
103rd floor. You can walk on the ledge, a glass wall.
- Shedd Aquarium: one of the biggest aquariums in the world.
We have seen too:
- The bean: a big bean of steal in a park in Downtown
- Navy pier: A place of entertainment with gift shops, attractions and restaurants. There are
fireworks every Saturday evening.
- Magnificent mile: The place to do shopping near John Hancock Tower.
- United Center: Sport arena of Chicago Bulls (basketball) and Chicago Blackhawks (Hockey).
On the east side of the arena there is a statue of the famous player Michael Jordan.
- The Loop: center of the city, this name is derived from the cable car turning loops in the
downtown area.
6- Camping in Red River Gorge (August 16th-18th)
Located in Daniel Boone State Park in Kentucky, Red Rived Gorge is a canyon on the Red river. In
this park there are some wild bears. I spent a week end with two students of CESI and some other
friends.
We rented a cabin in the forest and we did campfire and barbecue. We did hiking around the river
and we spent 4 hours to do kayak on the Red River. At the half of our trip we took a break and we
dived from the top of a big rock famous in the park. We took the skylift, a chairlift to see the natural
bridge and views of the county.
Cédric MARTINEAU – FIA 2011/2014

7- Week end of Labor Day at New York City (August 30th-September 2nd)
New York City is one of the biggest and most important cities of the world. New York is crowded of
things to do and to see. The city is divided in five boroughs: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx
and Staten Island. I spent three day in New York with a student of CESI from Rouen. We have just
visited Manhattan because the city is very tall and the most important things to see are in
Manhattan.
We took the plane on Friday afternoon from Columbus (Ohio) to La Guardia Airport (NYC). We
began our Saturday by a trip in helicopter around Manhattan, Liberty Island, it was beautiful! Then
we took a boat to go on Liberty Island we saw Liberty Statue which is a present offered by French
people (Gustave Eiffel, Edouard De Laboulay…) to show the friendship between the two states and
to give lessons about true liberty at Napoleon III. After our trip we visit Ground Zero and his 9/11
memorial which are artificial waterfalls build in memory of victims of the September 11th 2001
attempt. Then we visit the Empire State Building we would have a good view of the city on top but
the skyview was crowded.
The Sunday we began by a walk on Times Square and 5th avenue, these two streets have a lot of
shops, restaurants and advertisement screens on building. After we visited the Top of the rock, a
skyscraper which have a better view than Empire State, we could see Central Park and Times Square
for example. Then we go to the American museum of natural history, we walk in Central Park and
we saw a baseball game in the park. To finish, after our visit of Central Park we came back on Times
Square to see the street by night.
The Monday we visit the high line, it is an old way for train laid out in green way with flowers,
fountain, and artists. We finished our week-end at JFK airport to come back in Ohio.
8- Week end in Florida (September 6th-8th)
I spent one week end in Florida with a student of CESI from Rouen.
The Saturday we went to Key West, the southernmost city of USA. Located on an island the road to
go to this city is the mythic US 1. This road across an archipelago of thirty-four islands and it is
surrounded of heavenly beaches (coconut palm, turquoise and pretty warm water, and white sand).
Saturday evening we visited Miami Beach and the famous street “Ocean Drive”.
The Sunday we went to Everglades State Park to see alligators and birds during a trip in airboat.
After the everglades we did a sightseeing tour of Miami, by bus to begin and then by boat. We
visited “Little Havana”, a Hispanic quarter of Miami and his famous street “Calle ocho”. There are a
lot of Hispanic people in Miami (65% of the population). After “Little Havana” we visited Miami’s
downtown which looks like at others American’s downtown with his skyscrapers. Then we went to
bayside to take the boat for the end of sightseeing tour, we visited the harbor of Miami, Star Island
and his amazing houses.

C – Food
1- Fast Food
Fast food restaurants are very popular in USA, some of these chains are famous in the entire world
(for example Mac Donald, Burger King, KFC). In America you can eat when you want and where you
want; there is a lot of restaurant open during all the day (and sometimes night) you can find it at
stadium, around interstate or workplace, in city. Most of them are cheaper than French restaurant,
for example you can buy a meal for only 4 or 5 dollars.
During my trip at Cumberland in Kentucky I saw the birthplace of the Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC).
This chain is the world's second largest restaurant chain after McDonald's, with 18,000 outlets in 120
countries and territories. KFC was founded by Harland Sanders, who opened his restaurant
in Corbin. With the opening of interstate Mr. Sanders must closed his restaurant. After this failure he
identified the potential of the restaurant franchising concept, and the first "Kentucky Fried Chicken"
franchise opened in Utah in 1952. KFC popularized chicken in the fast food industry. By branding
himself as "Colonel Sanders", Harland became a prominent figure of American cultural history, and
his image remains widely used in KFC advertising. However, the company's rapid expansion saw it
grow too large for Sanders to manage, and in 1964 he sold the company to a group of investors.
2- Cities’ Specialty
- Hot Dog from New York City: To eat a hot dog in New York is very easy, you can find it
everywhere, there are some sellers in all streets and it’s quite cheap to buy one (1 dollar).
New York’s hot dog looks like at our hot dog even if they add some sauerkraut and onions.
These hot dogs are famous thanks to lot of movies or series in which we can see people eat
New York’s specialty.
- Chili from Cincinnati: This chili con carne comes from Macedonia or Greece. It looks like at
traditional chili but the flavor is pretty different, there are different recipe to prepare
Cincinnati’s chili you can use cinnamon, cloves, allspice or chocolate. The chili is served in
hot dog or with spaghetti. You can add beans, onions and a mountain of cheddar cheese!
There are two restaurants chains which serve chili “Gold Star Chili” and “Skyline”.
- Deep Dish Pizza from Chicago: Mix of pie and pizza, the deep dish pizza is a pizza cook in a
dish pie.45 minutes are necessary to cook this pizza because it is a thick pizza. Particularity
of the deep dish is that the cheese is on the bottom of the pizza and the tomato juice is on
the top.

D – Sports
American Sports are a very important part of the American culture. American people play sports
when they are at High school and University. Sometimes university sport is more important for
Americans people than professional sport, for example the stadium of Ohio State university can
receive 103 000 persons for football game.
Americans like all sports even if some sports are more popular. The five most popular sports are
basketball, American football, baseball, hockey and rodeo. I saw all this sports except hockey
because hockey’s season begins in autumn like basketball men’s season, so I saw women basketball.
American football and baseball teams play during the summer so I could see games. I could see
rodeo show also because they never stop the shows.
In USA, all games of sport begin with American hymn and all people are standing and sing. In
Cincinnati there are a baseball professional team and a football professional team. A lot of arenas or
stadiums have the name of an important sponsor, for example in Cincinnati there are the Great
American Ball Park, The US Bank Arena.
The baseball team is “The Reds” they play at Great American Ball Park on Ohio riverside. I saw two
games of The Reds against Pirates from Pittsburgh and Cardinals from Saint Louis. Games of
baseball spend 3 days, each day you have 9 rounds.
The football team is “The Bengals” they play at Paul Brown Stadium near Great American Ball Park. I
saw one game of preseason against The Colts from Indianapolis. One team is composed of 53
players plus unlimited numbers of replacement players. There are only 11 players on the playground,
the players on the ground compose a squad. In one team there are different squads, one to attack,
one to defend… Football rules look like at rugby rules even if players can do passes forward.
In Cincinnati there isn’t basketball professional team so I went to Indianapolis to see one game. Men
team, named Indiana Pacers, don’t play during the summer but women play during this period so I
saw a game of Indiana fevers at Bankers Field House arena, this arena is bigger than French arena.
Indiana Fevers played against New York Liberty. Indiana Fever won the championship of previous
year.

V- Conclusion
These 3 months in Cincinnati are a very good experience for me and for my future professional
experience. I improved my English but not only, I uncovered another culture, even if it look like a
little at French culture. I uncovered too new method of management and work.
Work teams were very friendly and I could exchange about our different work conditions, methods. I
could use tools that I learned at school and in my company in France like Value Stream Mapping,
Project management.
I had luck to visit different countries of USA and there a lot of beautiful things to see (landscapes,
cities, sports, monuments). USA is very tall and I wasn’t able to see all so I think I’ll be back next time
to see other countries.
In a nutshell I think that experience could help me to become more independent, little more curious
and more careful to suggestions give by people around me. I’ll keep this experience in my memory
for the rest of my life.
