Mis-en-scene means putting things in the picture. Itconcerns the design of the scene and the arrangement offurniture, props, lighting etc. The arrangement of everything inthe shot is purposely done in order to convey a meaning to theaudience. Although the audiences attention is mainly focusedon the foreground they will be looking at the background foradditional clues. Even if this is not the case, the Mis-en-scenestill in fact does subconsciously help shape their meaning of acharacter. For example if a females apartment is all pink with

bright furniture then the audience see her as an extroverted, feminine individual. Taking all of this into consideration I haveclosely looked at the meaning of Mis-en-scene and itsimportance in a film and have come up with ideas that willcontribute meaning to the audience. For example

The location: The location of the Library was perfect

because it reflected on the stereotypical view of Nabils

character as the typical geek. However the

positioning of the furniture didnt quite fit in with whatwe had in mind because it looked relatively dull andthis was what we were trying to avoid in order for our

film to become a successful comedy with the audience. The main thing about the Mis-en-scene in a comedy is

that the surrounding doesnt look dreary and dull andso this enforced us to change the furniture around toour liking and what we thought suited best.

The props i.e. the chairs didnt contribute to any

significant meaning or reflect on the protagonist.

    5/16

We changed these plain, black, plastic chairs into more modern,

red chairs for mainly three reasons.

We chose this colour because it is bright and stands out to the

audience, thus not creating that boring, dull surrounding for

    them.

Furthermore our main reason for the red chairs were because

they connote love. This is what Nabil feels for Lilly, he sees her as

an angel who is way out of his league. It signifies the intensepassion he feels for her, unable to take his eyes off of her.

The chairs have a very modern, up to date style that really help

the library stand out to the audience.

The colour red subconsciously help the audience think that Nabilmight just follow those three simple rules and Lilly therefore

might say yes to him. As a result when Nabil is hit by Lilly due to

his mess up the audience find it more shocking, thus finding the

idea more funnier because they had never expected it.

However we did want our main characters; Nabil,

Sarah and Aldo to stand out from everyone else so

the audience are able to connect with them moreeasily. In order to achieve this we used 4 other

chairs that were different from the first ones but

    were still red.

    Red chairs for the library.

All the extras are going to

    be seated in these chairs.

    These are the

    second red chairs

    that we will use for

    Nabil, Sarah and

    Aldo.

This is where theywill be placed

This is the table that the

    characters will use.

Significantly the legs of the chairs arealso red connoting romance and love.

Therefore the whole room is filled with

things that are red, really making the

    audience subconsciously think that

Nabil is going to go out with Lilly.

We decided that Nabil would see Lilly looking around; readingmagazines and therefore we moved all the chairs and tablesaway from that side in order to make more room for all the

magazine shelves, where Lilly would be standing.

This is how it used to look

    like, but when we moved

    all the furniture around,

there was definantly morespace for Lilly to walk

    around reading her

    magazine.

    This is how we

    changed the furniture

    around, creating

    more space.

These are the magazine stands where Lilly is

going to be standing when Nabil Notices her.And These are

This is the magazine Lilly will be reading:

We chose this particular magazine because it

reflects on her femininity, were she likes to

read gossip about other celebrities and read

about fashion. This emphasises on her

character, where she is very girly and likes to

    gossip with her friends.

    bags

I also chose some posters to be hanged

around the library in order to subconsciously

reflect on the situation and emotions of theprotagonist; Nabil.

    1. I chose a Star trek poster because it is

stereotypically known as the film for geeks and in

many comedies many similar characters like Nabilare a fan of either Star trek or Star wars i.e.

characters in The Big Bang Theory. The poster

helps reflect on Nabils character and his likes and

dislikes. From this the audience are able to build adeeper connection with him and have a better

    understanding of his character.

    And this is where

    the poster will be

    situated on; a bookshelf.

    WhatWomenWant was a poster I

thought that helped reflect on our

comedy genre because it is being ironic,

where we are mocking Nabil because he

has no idea what women want and howto approach them. Ironically the film is

about Nabil learning how to approach a

girl but failing dramatically and we

subconsciously give the audience a clue

by putting this poster up, already telling

the audience that Nabil is going to fail.

    This is where the poster

    will be situated; The book

    shelf.

    14/16

The reason to why I chose to put up a poster

of The Inbetweeners was because it is also a

comedy that involves a protagonist similar to

Nabil. It is a very successful comedy and when

the audience see this they are able to connect

it with our short film and see the comic

    similarities between the characters. In

addition the audience are already being put

into the comic mood by reminding them of

The Inbetweeners thus allowing them to find

    our storyline more humorous.

This poster is also situated on a book shelf,

    similar to all the others.

    Will McKenzie in The

    Inbetweeners; the character whichis quite similar to our character;

    Nabil.

These are A2 books that are going to be

placed on the table near Nabil as they are

meant to be his homework. We chose the

subjects that are most likely associated

with a geek in other films; Physics, statistics, Biology and Chemistry. The fact

that they are very big and heavy not only

emphasizes the amount of work he does in

school and Library but highlights his image

    as a typical geek.

    These are a few Doctor

    Who books that are

    placed on top of the

    shelf

This is the DoctorWho bookthat Nabil has in front of him.

He uses this book to quickly

    cover his face when he

    notices Lilly looking at him.

    I chose these books

    because they are

    meant to be a favourite

of Nabil in the film andthey also demonstrate

    his character as the

    typical Geek who is

    obsessed with Sci-Fi

    films.

Lighting We decided that when filming our film we would have both artificial

and natural lighting in order to create high key lighting which is mainlyused in comedies.

High-key lighting is bright and illuminating with very few shadows. Itsubconsciously helps put the audience in a more comic, positive moodand because of this they will find the intended jokes funny and nottake the film too serious or offensive.

For example some people may find that the character of Nabil is toostereotypical, giving the message that every intelligent, Star Trek fandoesnt know how to approach a girl but by unconsciously makingthem aware through the use of lighting and jokes that this is a comedynot to be taken too serious, hopefully theyll understand and find thefilm not only funny but entertaining.

The artificial lighting was the lights in the library and the naturallighting was from outside, which was visible from the windows. Inevery comedy film the lighting has to be soft and bright in order toreflect on the humorous, not so serious type of life, therefore wechose to film in the morning at around 11.00 Oclock as this was thetime where the sun was at its brightest.
