True luxury is actually being there
At the very east of the arc of the Gulfof Lion: the Petite Camargue, with itslandscapes of rice fields and canals, where pink flamingos mingle with thebulls and horses. There’s a breath offreedom here, and it’s the ideal placefor a family trip. You’ll see salt workerson your way, collecting the salt driedby the mistral, or mounted herders, guiding the bulls along with the tipsof their tridents. Save time for a swimon the beaches of the Gulf of Aigues-Mortes, after visiting Saint-Louis’celebrated walled city. In Grau-du-Roi, you must see the famousEspiguette: there’s a spot waiting foryou on this vast stretch of fine sand, isolated by the dunes. Then yousimply follow the sand into thedistance to reach the famous“pyramides” of La Grande-Motte.Between the lagoons and the sea, earth and water describe a mosaic ofsand, salt marshes and pinewoods. Ifyou come by boat, no problem: stopover in Port-Camargue - one of thelargest marinas in Europe - or at oneof the 27 ports in Languedoc-Roussillon, with 30,000 berths forpleasure craft. You will also sail past
maritime towns, as suggested bytheir names, like Palavas-les-Flots andSète, that “singular island” wherenautical jousting has become a fete.In the town of Georges Brassens andPaul Valéry, where even the cemeteryis marine, the lovely walk along theseafront is also a gastronomicalinvitation to the beach restaurants inthe summer, to taste oysters freshfrom the sea, eel stew or a fish platter.
A natural cinema set
For those who love active holidays bythe sea, don’t miss Cap d'Agde, theEuropean capital of naturism, its 14 kilometres of fine sand, itsunderwater trail, Leisure Island andamusement parks for young and old(including Aqualand). This doesn’tstop you from enjoying the manyprotected wildlife areas in Languedoc-Roussillon, with virgin coastline, particularly between Frontignan andMaguelone, with its ancient cathedralstanding like a look-out post over thewater. At the mouth of the Orb river, the Orpellières estate, with itsstring of sand dune beaches andsaltbushes is among the most
beautiful sites along the coast. InGruissan, the beach dotted withwooden chalets is also a real, life-sized cinema set (as witnessed in thefilm by director Jean-Jacques Beineix,“Betty Blue” (“37.2 le matin” inFrench). In this fishing village, a familysea resort, some like to linger on thebeach until the early hours of themorning in April, to admire the natural, romantic sight of the red moonsetting. Because, whatever theseason, the Mediterranean blue andthe sunshine light up the coast with athousand colours; it is this light on thecôte Vermeille (vermillion coast)which enthrals tourists just as it didMatisse and Picasso in the past, inCerbère, Port-Vendres, Banyuls andobviously Collioure, the cradle offauvism. The ideal place to find quietcoves with golden sand, surroundedby vertiginous cliffs, at the foot of thePyrenees. The perfect place for apicnic and a swim, with a basket ofCollioure anchovies and the wine ofBanyuls.

7 km from the sea, midway between Spain and Italy, “lose”yourself in Montpellier and find evidence of almost twelvecenturies of history: Mediaeval side streets, picturesquemonuments, town houses and royal palaces create itsexceptional identity.
An entirely pedestrian area, with lively designer shops andmultiple brand names, the Ecusson, the historical heart ofthe city, is the ideal place to wander and explore. Manyartists, drawn by this quality of life, have added an extratouch to the city. Contemporary dance has acquiredinternational renown here. Theatre, the music scene andart find expression in a variety of exhibitions, festivals, smallshows or major productions at the Opéra, the Zenith andArena - a new modern complex scheduled to open inSeptember - or quite simply on a street corner, in one ofthe trendy bars or restaurants in the city.
An ancient link
Make another leap from past to future in Nîmes. Among itsprestigious symbols: the ancient Roman arena and modernCarré d’Art, designed by the famous architect LordNorman Foster, housing a library, media library andcontemporary art museum all under the same roof. It isreally worth the visit, before stopping at one of theflourishing cafés and shops across the town, which springto life at the slightest ray of sunshine!
Then, set off to explore Mende, in the heart of Lozère,between the Causses and the mountains. The ancientcapital of Gévaudan, classified as a city of art, is wellworth the detour, with its rich architectural heritage.
The Via Domitia, the ancient road between Spain andItaly, is one of the historic links of these cities ofLanguedoc-Roussillon. You can still see the oldcobblestones, as in Narbonne, founded by the Romansin 118 BC, where a section has been preserved in theheart of the town. Surrounded by garrigues and vines, not far from a long sandy beach, the town, like itsneighbour, Béziers, has some exceptional sites. Some ofthe treasures to explore are the Archbishop’s Palace(Palais des Archevêques) and the Basilica of Saint Paul.Or still yet in Béziers, Pierre-Paul Riquet’s city, built onits rich and glorious past as a wine-growing eldorado withrich Cathar history. Further inland, Carcassonne seemsto stand guard over its treasures. An exceptional site, itsfortified citadelle overlooks the region and carries youback several centuries into the past.
At the end of an ancient Roman road you’ll arrive atPerpignan, situated at the foot of the Pyrenees and a citywith a strong identity. It’s not by chance that Salvador Dalidescribed the Perpignan train station as being the centre ofthe world. From the Palace of the Kings of Majorca (Palaisdes Rois de Majorque) to Castillet, and the picturesque sidestreets with their walls made of brick and river stones, a visitto the town is a must, to discover its charms to the full.

Let yourself be carried away by the song of the cicadas in summer, a light breeze carrying the scentof broom, rosemary and thyme. Far from the bustle of the city, the Languedoc-Roussillon countrysideoffers forgotten sensations, where time seems to stand still and nature is exalted.
Roaming through
authentic lands
Everywhere in the region, trails, gites and excursions offera taste of a unique environment, far from the pressuresof daily life. It is hard to resist the spell of these rocky, aridor wooded landscapes - natural or tamed - hidden in thedepths of a valley, by a calm or raging river, on sunnyhillsides, linked by paths or charming minor roads. Youcan discover all these landscapes either by car, by bike,or even on foot. Roads, paths and trails pass alongsidevineyards, orchards, and wheat and rape fields. You mightcome across an enclosure, where goats and sheep arekept to produce their creamy cheeses. Whether with a guide or on your own, the different options offeropportunities to savour these lands of character, meetingthe people who make the wines, honey, olives and otherMediterranean products. From the Rhône to thePyrenees, local areas express their true diversity: the Bleudes Causses and pelardon cheeses and sweet onions ofthe Cévennes, the olive oil of Nîmes, bullmeat from theCamargue, peaches and nectarines from the Costières, melons, almonds, apples and grapes, apricots, garriguettesweet strawberries and potatoes from Roussillon. Oneway to discover these is by travelling along the olive millroute in the Eastern Pyrenees, or enjoying the pleasuresof relaxation, gastronomy and culture in Céret, during the cherry festival. Or simply by losing yourself in thevineyards of Languedoc and Roussillon, in Banyuls-sur-Mer or the Corbières.
Harmony with nature
The wood “sings” in the cool of a starry night and thestones give off the warmth of the day. Simple or luxurious, the places to stay always opt for authenticity in thesecaptivating lands. Succomb to the charm of these old, centuries’ old buildings, renovated farms or picturesqueresidences, their stones steeped in history, surrounded bygardens, vineyards, woods or garrigue scrubland. Magicalplaces, infused with harmony, poetry and tranquillity. Thestopping off points are a chance to discover restaurantsand other eating places, with local specialties accompaniedby the wines or fruit juices of the region. The flavour isheightened by stories and legends from the past, recounted with colour and good humour. Tales that arerecounted by a fireplace, or a fountain, in the village squareor on a sunny terrace.
In these lands, the link with nature is still very strong.Donkey-trekking is available at some sites. Different ridesmore or less physically challenging let you take in thealways sublime and varied landscapes. You can also meetanimals simply by visiting a farm in the Hérault, on a picnicwith friends or family. Donkeys, poultry, rabbits, pigs, sheepand horses, set in a garrigue landscape right next to anauthentic dolmen.

Escaping into spectacularscenery
Southern Languedoc-Roussillon iswhere you find the most famoussummit, the “sacred mountain” as it’sknown in these parts: Mount Canigou(2785 metres) is barely 50 kilometresf rom the b lue wa te rs o f theMediterranean. It is a place ofpilgrimage for any self-respectinghiker, and the point of departure todiscover this part of the Pyreneanchain with its tumultuous relief, stretching from the rift basins of
Capcir and Cerdagne, and the valleysof the Conflent and Vallespir. Natureis so abundant tha t there issomething to please everyone. Likean excursion to the superb Carançagorges and a visit to the Canalettescaves, in Villefranche-de-Conflent.Escape into spectacular scenery thatyou can reach by car... or even bytrain! Between Villefranche-de-Conflent and Latour de Carol, thepicturesque hundred-year-old “yellowtrain of the Pyrenees” crossesprecipices and rivers, thanks to its 650 engineering structures.Guaranteed to win your heart as youreach the highest railway station inFrance, Bolquère, at 1592 metresaltitude.

Landscapes that are uniquein Europe, and which are obviously amagnificent sports ground in winterwith snow-covered trails, notably inthe ski resorts Les Angles and Font-Romeu.
Join in the grand mountain spectacle
With many cultural riches marking an epoch; travelling the roads ofLanguedoc-Roussillon, is like walkingalong the trails of history. You canfollow the trail of the Roman chariots, for instance and their deep ruts canstill be seen in parts of the ancient ViaDomitia at the site of Ambrussum. Butthe greatest testimony of the RomanEmpire is to be found near Uzès : thePont du Gard, spanning the Gardonsince the first century of this era. In themuseum at the foot of the monumentyou will find out that this structure -275 m long and 40 m high - is part ofthe aqueduct that used to supplydr ink ing water to the town ofNemausus (Nîmes). Travelling throughthe region, you will see how theRoman era has left other reminders.Like, for example, the Oppidum atEnsérune, near Béziers. At the centreof the site: an attractive museumdisplays numerous thousand-year-oldvestiges, while all around lies one ofthe panoramas of the Languedoc plainand... the Canal du Midi. This isperhaps your unique opportunity tohop on a barge at Colombiers and justfollow the current on the “river road”
linking the Atlantic Ocean and theMediterranean. You’ll get a glimpse ofthe Herculean task accomplishedduring the 17th century by visitingFonséranes, situated on the outskirtsof Béziers, where Pierre-Paul Riquetcreated a work of eight oval shapedlocks and nine gates which allowsusers to achieve a difference in levelof some 21.50 meters over a stretchof more than 300 metres.
The Cathar Castles
The journey through t ime inLanguedoc-Roussillon obviouslytravels along the roads of thecastles in the Land of the Cathars,in Aude. Visiting these fortressesperched on the hilltops, takes youright back to the Middle Ages. Themost imposing castle is Peyrepertuse, composed of three successivewalls which reach a height of nearly300 metres. On your way, be surenot to miss the four Lastour castles:Cabaret, Tour Régine, Surdespineand Quertinheux. So many idealfamily trips to touch the clouds...and History itself. The nearby
fortif ied city of Carcassonne, honoured by Unesco, also datesback to the Middle Ages. Theimpressive citadel overlooks thep la ins of the Minervo is andCarcassès, casting a look at theBlack Mountains and the sinuouscontours of the Corbières in thedistance. Further to the south, youcan make out the line of thePyrenees, where Vauban built thefortifications of Villefranche-de-Conf len t and the c i t ade l o fMont-Louis, listed as world heritagesites since 2008.
I f you enjoyed Carcassonne, you’ll love the Medieval city ofVillefranche de Conflent, one of theMost Beautiful Villages of France, where the architect of Louis XIVbuilt the fortifications. The fortressin Mont-Louis, built to defend thenew border with Spain after thesigning of the Treaty of thePyrenees in 1659, is at thestrategic crossroads of threevalleys (Têt, Aude and Cerdagne). It is also a stage in the journeyalong the history trails of the region.

The calvalcade ends in good humour in the heart of thevillage of Prats-de-Mollo-la-Preste in Roussillon. Locals andvisitors, some of them “stained” with ashes, according tothe tradition of the Bear Fete, mingle in the laughter of thelanes or on the terraces, overlooked by the Pyrenees. FromMontpellier to Perpignan, via Nîmes and Carcassonne, theinfluence of customs and legends is present in everydaylife, through an event, a story, a speciality or folklore, that isalways vivid and picturesque. It’s an experience withfascinating origins, to share and consume withoutmoderation! Summer is a time that particularly lends itselfto this type of event. Ferias and Camargue races liven upthe towns and villages, while the seafront is right at theheart of amazing fetes. The fishermen of Gruissan in Aude, splendidly perpetuate a 17th century fete on the day ofSaint-Pierre. After all, the offerings are made to guaranteethe success of the fishing season! Not to be missed eitherare the water jousting tournaments on the canals of Sète,Agde, Palavas-les-flots and Grau-du-roi, recounting the“combats” of the Middle Ages between teams of marriedmen and young, single men.
Pretty much everywhere, traditions come back to life thoughthe seasons: the Sanch procession in Perpignan, fete of Saint-Roch in Montpellier, the fires of Saint-Jean inCatalonia. In the Eastern Pyrenees, the July festival is theoccasion for dancing the sardane, highlighting one of themost picturesque of local traditions.
Legends can also be a little scary, much to the pleasure ofthe young … and the old! On the programme: the Beast ofGévaudan or the feast of Gargantua in Lozère, the “Volo
Biou” or flying ox, in the Cévennes, the “Pailhasses” inCournonterral in the Hérault, or the Witches Fete in theEastern Pyrenees, the myth of the “Drac” or dragons, inBeaucaire in the Gard and other stories that date back to the beginning of time, throughout the Languedoc-Roussillon.
The land and the people
At the corner of a lane, along a pathway, on a sign, monumentor residence, inscriptions evoke the presence of famous menand women of Languedoc-Roussillon. From the likes ofMatisse to Trenet, through Paul Valéry and Brassens, colourful figures have left their mark on the region. Painters, singers, writers and other historical figures ingeniouslystimulated the territory. People like Vauban (1633-1707) inthe Roussillon region or Pierre Paul Riquet (1604-1680), anengineer born in Béziers who dedicated his whole life tocreating the Canal du Midi. Those living in the region havebeen cradled in their childhood by the stories, fables andpoetry of figures such as Alphonse Daudet (1840-1897)born in Nîmes, whose birthplace can still be visited. Peoplehave been influenced by a whole generation of painters suchas Frédéric Bazille (1841-1870), originally from Montpellierand now recognized as one of the pioneers of impressionism.Molière also left his mark thanks to his many plays and showsstaged throughout the region from 1647 to 1657. You canstill see traces of his life and work left in several townsespecially in Pézenas, where an exceptional show recountsto audiences the life of the most famous French playwrightand stage actor. A trip through Languedoc-Roussillon is anopportunity to cross paths with some of these well-knownfigures, gone today, or even with more modern living figuressuch as Gérard Depardieu, Juliette Greco, Olivia Ruiz orPierre Richard.

On the theatre side, with threenational theatres (Narbonne, Sète,Alès) and a string of dynamictheatres, there’s a lot to choose from. It’s the same dilemma when it comesto choosing your film on Saturdaynight. And why wait till Saturday, when there are two big festivalsdevoted to the seventh art, right in thearea? Film previews, short filmcompetitions, retrospectives, fictions,documentaries... It’s a constant buzzevery year in Montpell ier withCinémed the Mediterranean filmfestival, and in Alès with Itinérances, the other event that is muchappreciated by film buffs, with its tendays of 180 films. And all this, fromOctober to Mars, represents 400films screened and almost as manywell-known actors and film makerscoming to talk about their art beforea happy audience of film fans.
A vast open airhappening
The other aspect of the region’sreputat ion is the astonish ingconcentration of festivals and culturalevents which, with the grace of
summer and all the little squares thatenliven the towns of the South andunfold like a vast open air happeningwith shows that are often free. This isthe case with the Radio France andMontpellier Languedoc-Roussillonfestival which simultaneouslybroadcasts in July before the generalpublic in Montpellier and with RadioFrance, operas, young soloists, jazz nights, reggae and electronicmusic… In addition to this isMontpellier Danse, another talentmachine which launches thefestivities in the Regional metropolisat the end of June. Once the pace is set, it spreads like wildfire, from one department to another. On the photography side, the regionhas nothing to envy its Arlesienneighbour: between Visa pourl’image the photojournalism event inPerpignan, ImageSingulières thefestival of social photography that issuch a hit in Sète, or Boutographiespresenting the best of the youngEuropean photography scene, held inMontpellier every year in May, thepublic is passionate about this artwhich opens our eyes to the world. You wander aimlessly from a modern gallery to a smallvillage museum without any artistic preconceptions. Norule ever presides over your choices ranging from aBrazilian ex-voto, modern art, and primitive art to GreatArt. This region is definitely for you! With fifty-sevenmuseums, grouped under the “France museum” label, ofvery diverse sizes and interest and collections rangingfrom paleontology, right up to modern artists, art in theLanguedoc-Roussillon region can practically be found onevery street corner. To begin the trip for reaching yourgoal, a good starting point could be Montpellier’s FabreMuseum, selected for its heterogeneous and magnificentpermanent collections which highlight the differencesbetween Flemish painting, Neoclassicism, 19th Romantic, large summer retrospectives and the other dark, obscurefor some and obvious to others, works of art whichconstitute the donated Pierre Soulages collection. By theway, the region is home to a host of places of distinctivenature and of nearly as many museums which tend tobring out real talent. In Sète, a city on the coast, the PaulValéry museum places great emphasis on local andregional contemporary artists from Sète. In Lodève, theFleury museum has an international sheen with its largetemporary expositions. Art gatherings compete withothers from one end of the region and calendar to theother during the whole year…
Starting with the Fauves, a permanent exposition inCollioure and the Cubists organized by the Céret ModernMuseum of Art. In the Cité de Picasso, you will have aunique artistic experience in the cradle of the Cubistmovement: Braque, Soutine, Chagall, Matisse… All thepaintings by these masters are there hanging in thecoolness and silence of a small regional museum. Whenyou leave the museum, you can then take a stroll throughthe quaint streets of the Cité and look for round andgenerous bronze sculptures by Aristide Maillol, a son ofthe soil. You can have a general overview of the works ofthis great artist, just a short 40 kilometres away inBanyuls-sur-Mer where there is museum honouring hiswork. Modern art enthusiasts can choose from the Carréd’Art in Nîmes, the Modern Regional Art museum inSérignan, inescapable places of interest which presentexpositions and collections or the Regional Centre forModern Art in Sète dedicated to artistic creation andexperimentation.
The most beautiful architectural examples Witness to the dynamism expressed all throughout theregion, the architectural settings which encapsulate themuseums, designed and built by renowned architects, are quite impressive. In Nîmes, you can ponder the outerglass layer designed by Sir Norman Foster to embellishthe Carré d’Art and its modern art expositions… InMontpellier, the Fabre museum was renovated in 2007by the Nebout-Puyeo firm (who co-designed the Museumof Man in Paris). Art can also be explored in a moremodest way by looking at more picturesque museumssuch as the Modest International Art Museum in Sètesituated along the royal canal housing the works of moremodern popular creation gathered from all over the globeby the local Setois painter, Hervé Di Rosa.

Languedoc-Roussillon, you will find atable to suit your taste - and yourbudget- to enjoy the many regionalspecialities: aligot and tripous inLozère, Aubrac beef, Camargue bullstew, cod brandade in Nîmes, tielles(seafood tarts) or stuffed squid inSète, Cassoulet in Castelnaudary,crème catalane in the EasternPyrenees... At all the village markets, you can fill your basket to the brim:anchovies in Collioure, pélardons(goat’s cheese) in Lozère, peachesand apricots in Roussillon, or thetraditional Lucques olives, also foundin tapenade, and which produce “thebest of the best” olive oils, accordingto the legendary chef Joël Robuchon! And don’t miss a visit to the traditionaloil mills, like the one in Bize Minervois.
From producer to consumer
One of the assets of gastronomy in Languedoc-Roussillon is itsaccessibility for all. You can find thebest products directly: from producerto consumer. On the shores of thelagoons in the region, shellfish farmers- real sea farmers - line up their stallspiled high with fresh oysters andmussels. Eat them there or take themhome, as you please. L ike inBouzigues, where you can combineall the pleasures of the senses in one
moment: the lovely view of thelagoons, the sound of lapping water, the cool touch of a glass of Picpoul dePinet, the delicious taste of oystersand mussels (en brasucade, i.e. grilledover vine stock embers) just off theboats of the local producers. This is asample of direct regional cuisine, scented with the nearby garrigue, itsfragrances of thyme, rosemary, sageor fennel. And don’t forget to try thingsout: in Languedoc-Roussillon you’llfind unique ingredients, such as thePardailhan turnip, or the cèbe (sweetonion) from Lézignan. Its a marriage oftaste and nature, to savour all yearround, from autumn, the high seasonfor gathering chestnuts in theCévennes, through to summer, withthe delights of eating sea bream, shellfish and clams in little restaurantsright on the beach. You may also wantto take home some of those littlesweet treats, Rousquilles du Vallespiror Grisettes de Montpellier, perfectreminders of the unique flavours ofLanguedoc-Roussillon.

to experience live!Unusual holidays… Experiences and holidays that are out of the ordinary are waitingfor you at the four corners of Languedoc Roussillon. A hint ofadventure and escape, at a bend in the path, in the heart of ahistorical centre, on a beach, or a wooded hillside with thefragrance of thyme and rosemary. There are infinite options toenjoy this land steeped in history, with its charming traditions, inhistorical centres, landscapes that are sometimes mysterious, andcontrasts that are vivid and fascinating.
True luxury means pampering yourself
Hiking gets the top prize for the most popular sport, with6300 kilometres of tracks and registered hiking trails (GR)to explore nature in all its contrasts. They will take you fromSaint-Maurice-de-Navacelles to Saint-Privat in Hérault, fromCarcassonne to Bourg-Madame in the Eastern Pyrenees, from La Canourgue in Lozère to Beaucaire in Gard, alongmule tracks or “drailles” (transhumance trails) which run fromthe Aubrac plateau to the lonely reaches of the high plateaux, notably the Grande Draille in Languedoc (GR 60), whereyou enter the scenery of heath land and dark forests. Thechampion sport is everywhere, practised by all and at alllevels, in the heart of untamed nature or along the Historytrail: many registered trails actually follow the ancient ViaDomitia, the roads to Compostella, or Stevenson’s trail(GR70), which you can take accompanied by a donkey.
Wild sceneryfor thrilling sensations Want to get out into the wild? The landscapes of Haut-Languedoc are a luxury, with the forests of Aude andsurrounding the Canigou in the Eastern Pyrenees. You canget there by hiking through limestone rocks, your lungs filledwith the scent of the vegetation of the garrigue, after passinga “gutted” Cathar castle on your way along the ridge path.Loners on long hikes, can press on further to the Aubracplateau, with its first spring flowers, to admire the dancingdaffodils, or in the winter, kitted out with snowshoes, can cutacross the forests that populate the region’s 18 ski resorts.Downhill or cross-country skiing, snowboard, snowshoeing, dog sledding, tobogganing...
Wintersports enthusiasts simply need to choose betweenthe snows of the Cevènnes and the small family resorts ofMount Lozère and Aubrac, the well-known resorts of Capcirequipped for Alpine skiing (Formiguères, Les Angles,Puyvalador) or Font-Romeu-Pyrénées 2000, Porte-Puymorens and Cerdagne-Puigmal.
Others prefer the summer: freshwater sports out in thecountryside, whether in turbulent rivers (the Orb, the Hérault, the Tech, the high valley of the Aude) or water recreationareas, and there are many mountain lakes too… Canoeing, kayaking, rafting, canyoning… You can practise whitewatersports at just the level of thrills and effort you are looking for.And for those who want to brave the sea elements,Languedoc-Roussillon is where the top kitesurfers andwindsurfers compete every year on the beaches of Leucate-La Franqui for the Mondial du Vent. With fifteen differentsports in the competition, kite-surfers sail the winds of theTramontane and the Mistral, along the shore. This freestyleboardsport, practised between the sky and the sea, wasinvented on our coast in 1992 and has become the regionalsport: a refreshing experience to try out in one of the 23schools with kite-surf instruction.

Little day-to-day aches and pains can be cured by the sea.In places like Grau-du-Roi, Port-Camargue, La GrandeMotte, in Banyuls-sur-Mer, Canet in Roussillon and PortBarcarès. In the grand tradition of seaside spas, thesedestinations are greatly appreciated by spa-goers year-round. People come to recharge their energies inthalassotherapy or balneotherapy institutes that are oftenright on the beach, with views overlooking the sea. Here, algae, sea muds with renowned properties, and seawater, applied by massage and hydromassage, balms andtreatments, work miracles against stress and fosterwellbeing. This is the revised, exotic version of a southernseaside tradition, luxurious yet popular... as now thatseveral institutes have been created along the coast, somevery attractive prices and à la carte formulas are available(short stays, treatments by the day, or the week, fitnessformulas, detox, etc), thalassotherapy is within everyone’sreach.
waters of youth in Languedoc-Roussillon
From the spring to the sea
All roads lead back to the source
Higher up in the mountains, where nature has beenpreserved, set amidst picturesque villages, the ferruginousor sulphurous waters, the sense of getting away from it alland the pure air enrich the energy capital of the spavisitors. Health is also a gift from the mountains! With87,000 spa visitors a year, 12 spas dotted between laChaldette on the Aubrac in Lozère, Bagnols-les-Bains atMont Lozère springs, Allègre-les-Fumades in Gard, Avène-les-Bains, Balaruc-les-Bains and Lamalou-les-Bains inHérault, Rennes-les-Bains in Aude, hydrotherapy cures arethe other fountain of youth in Languedoc-Roussillon. Afountain that flows fast in the Eastern Pyrenees, with fiverenowned water spas (Amélie-les-Bains, La Preste-les-Bains, Le Boulou, Molitg-les-Bains, Vernet-les-Bains).These destinations, mostly known since Antiquity, like LesFumades-les-Bains where according to legend, Caesar, the first famous spa visitor, made a halt between twocampaigns, offer visitors the most modern of equipment. It is simply a matter of choice, although it is often hard tochoose between family spa resorts, spas specializing inskin treatments, health spas, or simply destinations forrelaxation. Having said that, a state of wellbeing is alwaysthe aim. Whether it’s floating lightly in a swimming pool orperched up in the trees, on the Aubrac plateau in LaChaldette, at the heart of the exceptional site in theCastellane Gorges in Molitg-les-Bains, or in the High Valleyof Aude in Rennes-les-Bains, where trying out the hotsprings is an absolute must.
Flowing hot water, is the other version of happiness in themountains. In Cerdagne in the Eastern Pyrenees, at theend of little roads that seem to get lost in the mountains, you come to some amazing outdoor hot water springs, known since Antiquity. These are the hot baths in Llo,Dorres and Saint-Thomas, where the water gushes fromthe granite and schist at 38 to 70°C. A pleasure ofcontrasts, where luxury is soaking in the steaming water, comfortably installed in the baths with the mountain chainstretched out in front of you, and right before your eyes, the snow-capped Carlit (2920 m).
