The Esterel massif

A nature reserve in the heart of the massif. The National Forestry Commission and Ushuaïa have created an800 hectare nature reserve with the aim of protecting and pre‐serving the natural heritage of the Esterel and gaining a betterunderstanding of, and managing, the dangers facing the plantsand wildlife.

Respecting the environmentIn order to prevent forest ires, all types of ire or lame in fores‐ted areas are prohibited all year round. The authorities mayrestrict access to the massif in very strong winds. For informa‐tion go to www.var.gouv.fr and click on politiques publiques/en‐vironnement/ forêts. Vehicle access is prohibited between 9pmand 6am.

Sites Natura 2000The Esterel with its rich biodiversity and remarkable geologicalheritage is part of the European network of Natura 2000 sites. The aim is to preserve the most precious natural habitats whilstmaintaining the economic bene its and leisure activities of theregion. The site measures a total of 15,000 hectares (7,800 hec‐tares of land and 7,200 hectares of marine environment). As partof this project the local authorities of the Var Estérel Méditerra‐née region (CAVEM), working in tandem with local organisa‐tions, are responsible for the management and conservation ofthe site. Find out about all the Natura 2000 Estérel projects at:http://esterel.n2000.fr/

Nature trailThis footpath, accessible for people with reduced mobility, is2600 metres long and runs between the Anthéor plateau andSaint‐Barthélémy’s rock. Along the nature trail you will discovera selection of the typical plants of the Esterel, recognizableby their fragrance and texture. The nature trail is re‐createdevery year from April to June ( lowering season) and is madefrom mobile material in order to protect the landscape.

Access to the Estérel Massif :

Nestled between the Mediterranean and Provence, the Esterel is a volcanic massif that stretches over32,000 hectares of which 14,000 hectares are protected. The surprising red colouring of the Esterel

is due to rhyolite and red porphyry volcanic rock, dating from the Palaeozoic Era
