Social Skills GroupsNEW SOCIAL SKILLS RESEARCH OPPORTUNITY FOR CHILDREN AGES 8-10! PARTICIPANTS NEEDEDMondays 6:00-7:00 pm and Wednesdays 6:00-7:00 pm 10 Weeks Cost: $395 January 20-31 (Pre-assessment by appointment) February 3-April 19 (Classes) April 28-May 10 (Post-assessment by appointment)

This is an established social skills research project through the University of Missouri-Columbia’s College of Education, National Institutes of Health, and Miriam. Beginning February 3rd, for 10 weeks, children, age 8 to 10, with at least average cognitive abilities, and who have high functioning autism or Asperger’s can receive 20 sessions of research-based social skills training. The project consists of pre and post diagnostics and two hours of weekly social skills training.

Students receive instruction, opportunities to practice skills, and feedback on issues related to social perspective taking, conversational skills and problem solving. The Thompson Center for Autism and Neurodevelopmental Disorders housed this research for five years for adolescents. Research shows promising gains for participants using this model.

Only 6 participants will be selected. Skills build on the previous class so children must be able to attend all sessions or they will need to make up missed classes. Call 314.961.1500 to discuss the project. Pre-assessments begin the week of January 20th.

Social Pragmatic Skills Training Both Sessions: 8 weeks $295 each session

Using Michele Garcia Winner’s Think Social curriculum, students ages 5-14 with Autism learn to share space with others, think about others in the shared environment, and regulate one’s own behavior to other people’s thoughts or experiences. This is a research-based program that has proven to improve social skills. Our model includes direct instruction, play-based activities, modeling, videotaping, social stories, and other methods to reinforce the “skill of the day.” One skill may be addressed over several sessions. Ten minutes of a sensory diet is incorporated into each session. We require that parents come into the classroom the last 10 minutes of each session to ensure parents are able to follow through with lessons throughout the week. All classes meet one hour per week. Children must benefit from a 4:1 student to teacher ratio in order to participate. Call for available days and times. Social Skills for Children with ADHD and Challenging Behaviors Session I: $695 Additional 8 week Sessions: $500

Using cognitive-behavioral therapy; parents, a licensed therapist, and the child work together on one behavior for 8 weeks, to improve compliance, impulsivity, or the ability to get along with peers and family members. Children must be ages 4-12 and will meet in groups of two with a therapist for one hour each week to work on social skills. Parents meet privately with the therapist every week for one hour to improve upon the targeted goal. Call for available days and times.

C.O.P.E. Social Skills Training for Teens Both Sessions: $295 each sessionC.O.P.E. is a research based social skills training for teens ages 14-18 with social challenges. The program involves goal setting, emotional regulation strategies, exploring ways to make friends, strategies to handle bullying, and addressing other issues that impact teens. This is a perfect for children who have average to above average cognitive abilities and learning disabilities, ADHD or Asperger’s. The class meets for one hour each week. Call for available days and times.
