Did you know that the Miramar Peninsula has an area of 800 hectares?
Shelly Bay: -From 1885 to 1995, Shelly Bay was a naval and air force base, and many barracks, workshops,
stores, wharves and slipways were built.
History: Shelly Bay is the site of a former air force base with a long military history which began with the
construction of the Submarine Mining Depot Barracks in 1887.
The area was then a navy base from 1907 to 1946, when it was transferred to the Royal New Zealand Air
Force.
Concrete munitions magazines are in pine forest above the bay.
The air force base closed 1995.
In 2009 the land was handed over to Taranaki Whanui ki Te Upoko o Te Ika as part of a Treaty of Waitangi
settlement.
Ongoing and new Projects:
Shelly Bay: The BID Board are working in the interests of the Miramar BID and the community to understand
the effects that such a large development will have on Businesses on the Peninsula
Miramar Ave Development:
The BID Board and representatives of the retailers on Miramar Ave are continuing work with Council and their
consultants on the Miramar Ave development project.
A meeting was held on Miramar Ave on Monday 16th May with the Consultants and the Urban Planners with
the Urban Planners to come back to the BID with further designs.
The Urban Planners will be taking into consider issues like the trees, pedestrian walkways, safety,
infrastructure and the camber of the road.
The BID is looking forward to presenting the proposals to the Community for consultation and understanding
before plans are finalised at community workshops dates still to be confirmed.

Two new Wifi Hotspots have been identified for the FREE Wifi network.

Resilience – Emergency:
New Miramar BID project for 2017.
Mary has been visiting a lot of the businesses asking them to complete the Civil Defence paperwork left with
them, this is taking some time to get this information together, if you have not received the document please do
not hesitate to contact Mary to make a time to call on you or to email you.
The BID is interested in hearing from all Businesses as to their capabilities in an emergency and how your
business would be able to contribute to an emergency.
The Miramar Peninsula could well be cut off from Wellington in an emergency and we need to consider being
self-sufficient not only in our own homes but in our efforts to get all businesses back up and running as soon as
possible.
The Board are currently working on securing the availability of generators for businesses in Miramar who may
require them in the event of an issue, and also to provide the charging facilities.
4
TV Screens
The first of the TV screens with a collage of 57 rotating images showing the history of Miramar Peninsula have
been installed in the Peninsula Medical Centre.
There are currently 2 TV stands which can be placed in your business for a 6 month period, the stands are
strong and the construction of these has taken into consideration safety of the public.
If you are interested in having the TV and stand in your business please contact Mary.
Bike Racks

negotiating the location of maybe one or more of these (if available from Council)
