We would like to introduce this plant to producers in Turkey, which is state-assisted researched, scientifi-cally determined to be beneficial in terms of health.

Aronia is an antioxidant berry containing phenol, minerals and vitamins that can potentially pre-vent heart disease and cancer, as scientifically de-termined. Our country’s ministry has performed studies to confirm this and the results of the study showed that in comparison with 100 other plants, aronia has the highest level of antioxidants.

Medicinal plant in Russia

Institute engineers emphasized that the Aronia berry, due to its high activity is regarded as a medicinal plant in Russia and is used it to treat various diseases including cold, stomach diseas-es, intestinal, liver and gallbladder treatments, and radiation poisoning. Aysun Özturk, a food engineer at the institute, said that they exam-ined the chemical analysis of the fruit and the nutrient content and continued “It is consumed as fresh fruit or syrup all over the world and we are trying to develop new products suitable for Turkish taste with aronia. We are now planning to make jam with aronia now. As you know can-cer is the disease of our time. Medical practitio-ners around the world are working on it, there are many scientific papers as well.”

ARONIA FRUIT IS ALSO EFFECTIVE ON TUMOR CELLS

A study in the UK found quite beneficial effects on brain tumor cell cultures.

Akdeniz University Faculty of Medicine Phar-macology Faculty Member Prof. M.D. Coşkun Usta, has reported that aronia fruit has been found to have very beneficial effect on brain tumor cell cultures. Prof Dr. Usta stated in his written statement that Aronia is a plant of Eu-ropean and Russian origin from the family of rosaceae and is very low in terms of caloric val-ue. Usta indicated that aronia contained many minerals, mainly iron and calcium, and that it is also rich in vitamins B6, B2, E.

Usta, underlining the fact that the fruit has a pro-tective effect on many diseases, included the fol-lowing in his statement; “In the past 10 years, 13 important clinical trials have been conducted. In these studies, evidence has been obtained that many fields of medicine may benefit from it. Of the 13 study conducted, 5 were on metabolic syndrome and 3 on diabetes and hypertension. A study in Poland showed beneficial effects on blood cells due to its antioxidant effects. Yet an-other study in England, showed it to have benefi-cial effects on tumor cell cultures.

Referring to the strong anti-inflammatory effect of aronia, Coşkun Usta reported that the plant also has a protective effect on the liver, as well as a positive influence on diabetes and blood fat.

While suggesting that the fruit of the plant should be consumed in abundance in order to protect from the flu, he also stated ‚‘Also, individuals with liver problems and those who have alcoholic liver should also consume it.

Aronia plant is one of the strongest antioxidants in the world.“ In addition, Usta also explained that aro-nia can be consumed as dried or fresh and under-lined the rejuvenating effect of the fruit.

NATURAL SOURCE OF ANTIOXIDANT

Aronia has the highest antioxidant value among 80 fruits. For this reason, aronia has a high ORAC value (the elimination of substances called free radicals in our bodies that lead to many diseases such as cancer, in other words, it is a measure of absorption value and used for nutrients.)

Anthocyanins of the aronia plant were tested in experiments conducted in 2002 at the Department of Pharmacology of Lodz Military Medical Academy in Poland. It was observed that the presence of an-thocyanins in aronia has reduced the problems as-sociated with ‘oxidative stress’ in patients with car-diovascular disease.

BALANCES BLOOD PRESSURE LEVELS

Aronia helps keep blood pres-sure at a normal level. In 2007, studies conducted by the Cen-ter for Atherosclerosis Research at the Medical University of Warsaw and the Department of Pharmacog-nosy at the Pomerainian School of Medicine found that patients with myocardial infarction and statin therapy and with cardiovascular risk symptoms had decreased blood pressure and Ox-LDL (bad cholesterol) levels after being treated with aronia.

A lot of study has been done on diabetes with aronia. In a study conducted at the Bulgarian Plovdiv School of Medicine, sugar-free aro-nia juice was obtained to treat diabetic patients. In 2007, research conducted by the Department

of Preclinical Pharmacology and Biochemistry of the Varna Medical School on experimental rats found that the use of Aronia as a fruit juice prevented and controlled diabetes.

In a study conducted in 2003, aronia, which is par-ticularly effective for colon cancer patients, has proven to be a natural defense tool to combat colon can-cer. An article published by the Ohio State Univer-sity published that anthocyanin pigment found in the aronia has slowed the growth of cancer cells by 50-80%.
