With summer over, we’ve wrapped

up another year for the South Texas

Cattlemen’s RoundUp. In June, I had the

opportunity to attend one of these unique

fundraising events. Regardless of the heat

and humidity, the smiles on the faces of

the children were constant as they helped

gather and display items for the auctions.

The Live Oak event in Three Rivers was

especially memorable this year as the

community paid tribute to the late Hoyte

Gentry, one of the founders of the South

Texas Cattlemen’s RoundUp. His tenacity,

spirit and generosity helped make these

events a South Texas tradition. Thank you

to everyone for your efforts in making this

year’s RoundUp a great success.

We’re looking forward to the coming

months as there are big plans on the

horizon for Driscoll Children’s Hospital. An

$80 million construction and renovation

project will continue to transform the face

of our hospital and bring an even higher

level of convenience and family-centered

care for our patients and families. The

massive project will include a new, two-

story pavilion that will have the capability to

be expanded to five stories. The structure

will house an Outpatient Surgery center,

Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) and

a new Outpatient Lab. In addition, this

project will include renovating the existing

Operating Room (OR) to include two new

OR suites, giving the hospital a self-

contained OR with supply and equipment

areas and a sterile processing center, all

centrally located. We’re looking to the

future and ensuring we provide the highest

level of care for the children and families of

South Texas.

Driscoll Children’s Hospital has been

blessed with the support of our community

for more than 60 years. We could never

accomplish all we hope and dream for

our children’s healthcare services in South

Texas without it. It’s humbling to see the

impact this support has allowed us to have

in the lives of the children we serve. Our

growth ensures that we will continue the

vision of our founder – Clara Driscoll. Thank

you for your continued support of Driscoll

Children’s Hospital and the children of

South Texas.

Having been involved with the Driscoll

Children’s Hospital’s Development

Foundation Board since 2008, and now

serving as the Board President, it has

indeed been an honor to represent and

advocate for this outstanding children’s

hospital. I’m inspired by the enthusiasm

and commitment displayed by the staff,

employees and volunteers every day

for the mission of the hospital. Through

that commitment, we have become

a preeminent resource for health and

hope to children and families in South

Texas.

Children’s hospitals are special places

that provide highly specialized pediatric

care in a compassionate, child-friendly

environment. Not every community has

a children’s hospital, which presents

incredible stress and hardship on

parents and families seeking the

best care possible for their children.

Clearly, Driscoll Children’s Hospital is a

prized asset to the quality of life in our

community.

I recognize the significance of the

services that Driscoll provides, which is

why I invest my time as a member of

the Driscoll Development Foundation

Board. Thank you for supporting this

amazing organization with your time,

talent and treasure.

Foundation Board of Trustees and the

Driscoll Children’s Hospital Governing

Board of Directors approved an

exciting venture that will add a 70,000

square foot pavilion to the front of the

hospital and cement Driscoll’s spot as

the premier location for the care and

well-being of South Texas infants and

children.

The monumental project, which

will break ground in 2016, will add

a two-story pavilion to the front

side of the hospital and will house a

new Outpatient Surgery center and

Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU).

The first floor of the new building will

be home to a new Outpatient Surgery

center and Outpatient Lab. The new

PICU will feature 16 patient-centered

private rooms, accommodating more

privacy and an even higher level of

technology. It all will be connected

to the hospital’s main lobby by a

concourse.

The new pavilion will be adjacent to an

expanded and renovated Operating

Room (OR). The renovation will provide

two additional OR suites and give

the hospital a self-contained OR with

supply and equipment areas and

sterile processing center, all centrally

located.

“Having a self-contained Operating

Room that is adjacent to a new

Outpatient Surgery center and

PICU will make things easier for our

physicians and staff and make things

more convenient for patients,” Driscoll

Children’s Hospital’s Vice President

of Patient Care Services Karen Long

said. “These changes not only will give

everyone more space, they will create

a better flow in the hospital.”

In additional phases of the vast

construction project, the Neonatal

Intensive Care Unit and Radiology

waiting areas will be upgraded to make

those spaces more child-friendly and

family-oriented. The project also will

include enhancements throughout the

hospital, including a relocation of the

hospital’s helipad and an expansion of

the parking garage.

This prodigious construction project is

a significant investment that will enable

Driscoll to offer even more services

for infants, children, women and their

families. It’s a vision, decades in the

making, that will require continued

support. We look forward to partnering

with our community in making this

vision a reality.

$80million

For 62 years, Driscoll Children’s Hospital

has kept a vigilant focus on serving the

needs of the children of South Texas.

In its 63rd year, the hospital will embark

on an $80 million expansion project that

will ensure Driscoll Children’s Hospital

remains the top source of pediatric care in

South Texas.Investing in the future:

“The renovation project will help

us continue with our constant

goal of making sure Driscoll

is family-centered and will

enhance the delivery of care

we provide,” Driscoll Children’s

Hospital’s Vice President of

Operations Donna Quinn said.

“The new building will be built

with the future in mind and gives

us plenty of options for further

growth.”

Page 5: Miracle Alex Castro - Driscoll Children's HospitalIn May, the Robert Driscoll and Julia Driscoll and Robert Driscoll, Jr. Foundation Board of Trustees and the Driscoll Children’s

It was the hottest part of the day on

a typical scorching Corpus Christi

Saturday in June. Just about everyone’s

face on the Hurricane Alley Water

Park’s party deck featured flushed

cheeks and a sweaty brow. That made

the beaming smiles on three faces

of people standing on that balmy

wooden deck even more obvious.

It’s hard to say anyone was more

ecstatic than 5-year-old Marshall

Miguez. This was Marshall’s

momentous day. It was a party to

celebrate a little boy who already has

gone through 43 surgeries and fought

off cancer and kidney disease. Marshall

was delighted by the park’s towering

water slides and the jovial employees

dressed as characters from Toy Story

– his favorite movie – just for him. He

also got a kick out of all the adults

catering to him with pizza and soda.

The next two biggest smiles that

afternoon were proudly worn by two

of those adults – Kevin Sharp and

Sam Isaacs. Sharp and Isaacs were at

the celebration representing Rabalais

Instrument and Electrical Constructors,

whose generous donation made the

party in Marshall’s honor possible.

“That was such a fun day,” said Sharp,

president of Rabalais I&E Constructors.

“To see the smile on that little boy’s

face just made everyone there feel so

good. He had such a bright light to him.

He’s been through so much, but he

was running around giddy about the

party.”

“It was a hot day, but that little boy

couldn’t have been happier; I mean

he was literally beaming with joy,” said

Isaacs, Vice President of Rabalais I&E

Constructors.

It’s seeing those kinds of outward

expressions of happiness that keeps

the folks at Rabalais I&E Constructors

coming back to give to Driscoll

Children’s Hospital. Rabalais I&E is

always a big supporter at the annual

Fiesta de los Niños fundraiser. Fiesta

de los Niños features a live auction

where companies can bid on items

for themselves as well as for Driscoll

patients. Rabalais’ bid was the winning

bid for Marshall’s Celebration of Life

party, and they have also had the

winning bid in the past to send a

group of patients to a Disney on Ice

performance at the American Bank

Center in Corpus Christi.

“Fiesta de los Niños is such a great

event for the community,” Rabalais

MIRACLE STORY

Maribel seemingly could talk about her

only son forever. To be fair, the doting

mother’s insistence on talking about her

baby boy 18 years ago is the reason that

Alex is here today. When Alex was born,

he seemed fussier than Maribel thought

was normal. The mother insisted on

talking to doctors repeatedly to tell

them about her concerns for her son.

“My only other child is my daughter and

she’s seven years older than Alex, so

I was telling the doctor that Alex was

really fussy, but he told me I was being

paranoid because it had been so long

between children it was like I was a new

mother again,” Maribel said. “But, I knew

something was wrong. He was really

fussy. Crying a lot and colicky. Things

just didn’t seem normal. You can call

it a mother’s instinct or whatever you

want to call it, but I knew my baby was

hurting.”

After several weeks, Maribel took her

baby to a different doctor, who sent him

for X-rays and discovered why little Alex

was crying so much. He was diagnosed

with Total Anomalous Pulmonary

Venous Return (TAPVR), a rare

congenital heart malformation in which

all four pulmonary veins do not connect

normally to the left atrium. Instead,

the four pulmonary veins drain to the

right atrium by way of an abnormal

connection.

“Patients with TAPVR are extremely

sick soon after they are born,” Driscoll

Children’s Hospital cardiothoracic

surgeon J. Mark Morales, MD, said.

“These babies have respiratory

problems with rapid breathing, maybe

some grunting when they breathe.

Basically, you can see that the baby

is struggling to breathe. Sometimes

these babies are initially thought to

have pneumonia or other respiratory

diseases until the heart is looked at. So,

it’s not uncommon for these children to

go undiagnosed for several weeks or

months. Alex’s mother absolutely did

the right thing by keeping an eye on her

son and taking him for more tests.”

Once the correct diagnosis was made,

Alex’s doctor called Driscoll Children’s

Hospital and had him flown from the

Rio Grande Valley to Corpus Christi for

surgery. Driscoll Children’s Hospital’s

late cardiac surgeon James A. Duff, MD,

who was instrumental in creating the

cardiology program at Driscoll in the late

1960s, and Dr. Morales performed the

surgery on two-month-old Alex.

“As with any heart surgery, it’s a delicate

5 SUMMER 2015 DRISCOLL LIFE

Maribel Castro was by her son Alex’s side every step of the way as he was diagnosed with Total Anomalous Pulmonary Venous Return as a baby.

It’s not hard to decipher how Alex Castro’s mother feels about him.

As Maribel Castro sits behind the receptionist desk where she works at the Driscoll

Children’s Medical Plaza in McAllen, she talks about her son with such glowing praise, that

Alex reflexively covers his face with his right hand trying to cover the blush emerging in his

cheeks. He gives his mother a small smile, hoping her flattering words will cease soon.

Alex CastroBecoming a strong-hearted man

Page 7: Miracle Alex Castro - Driscoll Children's HospitalIn May, the Robert Driscoll and Julia Driscoll and Robert Driscoll, Jr. Foundation Board of Trustees and the Driscoll Children’s

procedure; however, everything went

smoothly,” Dr. Morales said. “We were

able to make a normal connection

between the right and left atrium. That

allows the blood to pump through the

heart normally and not make his heart

have to work so hard.”

Mom knew right away the surgery was

a success.

“You’re so nervous any time your

children are hurting, so just imagine

your little baby having his or her little

heart operated on,” Maribel said. “It was

definitely a nerve-wracking time for

the whole family. Dr. Morales and Dr.

Duff and everyone at Driscoll Children’s

Hospital were so great to us. Once we

got Alex to them, I knew things were

going to be OK, but you’re still nervous

until you get to see your baby again.

When I saw him, I knew he was feeling

better. Of course, it took some recovery

time, but he already was breathing so

much better.”

The progress was even more evident

when she got Alex to their home in

Pharr.

“I would just cry when I watched him

play,” Maribel said. “This was just

months after he got out of the hospital,

but just watching him do the simplest

things – crawling or eating or trying to

stand up – it made me start bawling

because he was doing it all with such

ease. He wasn’t coughing or moaning.

He wasn’t crying all the time. He was

just my happy little boy, just like any

normal baby.”

And, that’s been the theme throughout

18-year-old Alex’s life. Aside from

a scar on his chest, Alex shows no

evidence of what he endured as a

baby.

Alex graduated in the top five percent

of his class at Pharr-San Juan-Alamo

“It’s so hard,” Maribel said. “I know he’s going to do great

things, but I’m going to miss him so much. Alex and I are

so close, and I wish he could stay close to me all his life. I

guess every mother wants that, right? But, God has instilled

in my son faith and courage to do great things. And, the

surgeons at Driscoll Children’s Hospital have blessed him

with a strong heart to accomplish his dreams.”

Page 8: Miracle Alex Castro - Driscoll Children's HospitalIn May, the Robert Driscoll and Julia Driscoll and Robert Driscoll, Jr. Foundation Board of Trustees and the Driscoll Children’s

I&E Constructors Vice President Darrell

Harned said. “Driscoll always comes

through with such great items for the

auction, but we take the most pride in

bidding for something that goes directly

to the children. We’re donating money

so patients at Driscoll can go out and

do something they wouldn’t normally

get to do and have the time of their

lives. That right there brings us more joy

than you could ever imagine.”

Rabalais I&E has offices in Corpus

Christi, San Antonio, Houston, Dallas

and Baton Rouge, La., and has made

its home in Corpus Christi since 1984,

providing industrial and commercial

electrical and instrumentation work. The

company’s reputation for providing top

quality services in a timely and cost-

effective manner has made it one of the

most reliable and respected electrical

and instrumentation contractors in the

nation.

“Corpus Christi has been good to us,

and we try to be good right back,”

Isaacs said. “You can’t just take money

out of the community, and not give

any of it back. We’re strong believers in

helping out people in the city, and we

do a lot of that through the giving we do

with Driscoll Children’s Hospital.”

North High School in June, and

spent his high school years as an

accomplished member of the school’s

orchestra and mariachi group.

“Most of my friends know about my

heart surgery, but only because I’ve told

them about it. When I do tell them, they

pretty much all have the same reaction,

‘Wow, we would have never known,’”

Alex said. “I don’t play a lot of sports, but

I exercise when I can, and I don’t have

any problems. I’m a completely normal

18-year-old with no side effects from a

really serious surgery I had as a baby.”

After the surgery, Alex met with doctors

periodically for check-ups. The surgery

was such a success that those became

limited to annual check-ups. After Alex’s

visit as a 16-year-old, Driscoll Children’s

Hospital cardiologist Muhammad Khan,

MD, said those check-ups could be

spread out to every two years. In June,

Alex saw Dr. Khan for his two-year visit

and things looked so good, he was told

he could wait another four or five years

before checking in again.

“Alex had a beautiful surgery,” Dr. Khan

said. “When I examine him, he has

absolutely no deficiencies of the heart.

His initial surgery was such a success

that he never had to have any other

procedures, and he never experienced

any complications. His heart works as

well as any other heart does. I have no

doubt that Alex is going to live a long

and prosperous life and that’s because

of the quality of work done by Dr.

Morales and Dr. Duff 18 years ago.”

With his high school days behind him,

Alex is heading to Tulsa, Okla., where he

will major in youth and family ministry at

Oral Roberts University. Appropriately

enough, he received help from Driscoll

Children’s Hospital in the form of the

Dr. James A. Duff Scholarship, given

to eligible Driscoll heart patients and

named after one of the surgeons who

operated on Alex as a baby. It was those

early days in Driscoll Children’s Hospital

that Alex feels led him into ministry.

“There was a time when I was in middle

school, just your normal teenager going

through the typical teenager range of

emotions, and I talked to my mother

about my life, and she really opened

up to me about everything I’d been

through and really got through to me,”

Alex said. “When I was born, a pastor at

the church said I would be a fisherman

of souls. When I went to Driscoll

Children’s Hospital for my surgery,

there was a volunteer that greets the

families and gives patients a stuffed

animal before they go into surgery. He

usually gives a teddy bear or something

like that, but what did he give me?

A fish. It was a little sign. Also, when I

was recovering in the NICU (Neonatal

Intensive Care Unit), there was a little

picture next to where I was, and it was a

picture of a fish. Another sign.”

“My mom told me all of these things,

and told me the fact that your surgery

went so well and that you haven’t had

any complications or had to go back

for more surgeries shows that God

really is looking out for you. She told

me I need to make sure my life makes

a difference for others, and that’s what I

plan to do.”

Of course to do that, Alex is moving

800 miles away for college. That means

leaving his doting mother’s side, which

hasn’t been easy for Alex’s mother.

“It’s so hard,” Maribel said. “I know he’s

going to do great things, but I’m going

to miss him so much. Alex and I are so

close, and I wish he could stay close

to me all his life. I guess every mother

wants that, right? But, God has instilled

in my son faith and courage to do great

things. And, the surgeons at Driscoll

Children’s Hospital have blessed him

with a strong heart to accomplish his

dreams.”

Thank you to our generous donors.

The 31st Annual Children’s Miracle Network Celebration held

on May 30 - 31 commemorated another year of community

support and involvement for Driscoll Children’s Hospital.

Driscoll and Children’s Miracle Network have partnered

together since 1984 for the benefit of South Texas children, and

in 2015 raised a grand total of more than $2.8 million.

The annual celebration represents donations from individuals,

community organizations, corporations and foundations that

support the mission of Driscoll Children’s Hospital by selling

Miracle Balloons, hosting workplace giving campaigns,

sponsoring a variety of events and organizing marketing

promotions throughout the year.

Thank you to all of the generous supporters and volunteers

Sponsored by Lyssy & Eckel Feeds, the Cattlemen’s RoundUps

are grassroots fundraisers held throughout Driscoll’s 31-county

service area. Local 4-H clubs, Future Farmers of America

chapters, County Extension Agents and businesses participate

by donating goods and services to auction off for the hospital.

Visitors have their pick of homemade baked goods, agricultural

and ranching products, arts and crafts and a variety of other

items. All of this year’s proceeds will go toward the purchase of a
