Rhodes moved to approve the April 4, 2019, minutes; Colin seconded. Committee members granted full approval.

II. Athletics Marketing - Charlie Ta11lor

Taylor gave background information on his education & career and introduced Kelsey Laverdiere, Assistant Athletics Director for Marketing & Fan Engagement. His staff consists of 26 individuals and numerous student interns who oversee marketing for the UI sports programs.

Taylor continued with a PowerPoint presentation entitled "Fight For Iowa." (A copy is enclosed.) His talk focused on branding, i.e., meaning, visual impact, and delivery to get "buy-in" from fans, recruits, and the public. He stressed today's environment is an image­driven world and social media is the primary tool used to market the Iowa Hawkeye sports programs.

Committee members asked questions. Chair Matheson thanked Taylor who received a round of applause.

IIL Athletics Department Searches - Kehoe

Kehoe noted the assistant football coach position has been filled. Searches are underway for a men's basketball assistant coach, a soccer assistant coach, and a strength & conditioning assistant coach for wrestling. Friestad, Dillavou, and Kehoe are serving on those searches respectively.

Chair Matheson and Kehoe thank all PCA members who have participated in searches this past year.

IV. Subcommittee Updates

A. Student-Athlete Well-Being - Dillavou

Assistant Director for Facilities Damian Simcox attended the April 22, 2019, meeting and spoke about facility projects planned for 2020. Colin was also in attendance to enlighten the subcommittee on ISAAC activities that took place during the academic year. The men's and women's gymnastics coaches were present to talk about their facilities in the Field House. A tour of the gymnastics facility followed.

B. Academic Achievement - Bowden

Bowden reported Tovar attended their last meeting and spoke about the Gerdin Athletic Learning Center. She explained the softball team engaged in a pilot project to monitor each student-athlete's missed classes. The task proved to be successful. Further discussion will take place on what the future may hold for other sports.

A good discussion took place regarding graduate transfers. Plans are to monitor student-athletes who choose to transfer to another institution to see if they're finishing their degrees.

C. Equity - Osborn

Osborn stated Tovar attended the last Equity Subcommittee meeting to discuss the UI's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion survey results. Tovar enlightened the group on what the Athletics Department is doing in response to ideas received from that survey.

Equity Subcommittee members are completing their year-end interviews with coaching staff members. Osborn reminded Committee members the purpose of these sessions is to ensure that everything is good with their teams.

V. ISAAC Report - Gustafson. Colin

Colin highlighted the following:

A. The Annual Day of Caring took place Sunday, April 28, 2019. About 21 different agencies received assistance from 211 student-athletes on various community projects.

B. De-Stress Fest takes place Sunday through Tuesday, May 5-7, 2019. The Gerdin Athletic Leaming Center will be open Sunday from 2:00 p.m. -12:00 a.m. Student-athletes can study late, take breaks to participate in activities, and/or spend time with therapy dogs. Monday's activities will mirror those on Sunday. Breakfast will be made available Tuesday morning.

C. A Senior Transition Seminar took place Tuesday, April 30, 2019, to assist participants in transitioning from life as a student-athlete to the public sector.

D. The Golden Herkys was a success. A survey was sent to Athletics staff after the event to gain input for future events. Others with comments/suggestions should email Colin.

E. ISAAC Board members will publish their annual report of activities next week.

VI. NCAA Report - Barta, Burke, Grosland, Hollingworth

A. Hollingworth noted the Big Ten Joint Group will meet in Chicago, IL, on May 13-14, 2019.

B. Burke brought the Committee's attention to two NCAA legislative proposals that were presented at the NCAA Convention in January 2019. The graduate transfer rule was adopted, the NCAA portal is active, and student-athletes are aware this option exists. The second proposal recommended adding one additional assistant coach for softball and for baseball. This proposal was defeated.

VII. Athletics Director's Report -Barta

Burke presented the Athletics Director's report in Barta's absence:

A. The May sports report and schedules are enclosed. Year-end sport season highlights follow:

1. Three teams-men's gymnastics, women's basketball, and wrestling­received Big Ten Championship honors.

2. Either teams or individuals from field hockey, men's basketball, women's basketball, women's gymnastics, men's gymnastics, men's golf, swimming, indoor track, and wrestling participated in NCAA postseason competition. Football won the Outback Bowl.

3. Student-athlete individual accolades follow:

a. Megan Gustafson, Naismith Player of the Year b. Spencer Lee, NCAA Champion c. Alex Schaake, Big Ten Men's Golfer of the Year d. Ben Colin, NCAA Jim McKay Scholarship Recipient

Head Women's Basketball Coach Lisa Bluder was named Naismith Coach of the Year.

For the first time in the history of the NFL, the University oflowa is the only institution to have two first-round draft picks selected who played the same position.

4. Current national rankings follow:

a. Men's and women's track are both ranked 16th in the country. b. Women's rowing is ranked 12th in the country-their 26th straight

national ranking. c. The University of Iowa sports programs are ranked 23rd in the

Learfield IMG College Directors' Cup.

The University oflowa is one of four institutions (Iowa, Kentucky, Baylor, and Oregon) to win a bowl game and have both the men's and women's basketball teams advance beyond the first round of the NCAA Basketball Championships.

B. The following academic achievements were highlighted:

1. The UI's GSR (Graduation Success Rate) is 90%.

2. The overall team GPA (Grade Point Average) is 3.0.

3. Upwards of 150 student-athletes will graduate this year.

4. A total of approximately 300 student-athletes will be named to the President's and Dean's lists for 2018-19.

5. About 200 student-athletes received academic Big Ten honors.

C. Student-athletes compiled over 10,000 hours of volunteer efforts in the community this academic year.

VIII. Adiourn

Chair Matheson announced Bruhn and Rhodes have completed their terms on the PCA. Bowden's term ended also; however, since he finished a one-year term of a previous Committee member, the Faculty/Senate granted Bowden an additional year of service. Ryan and Yockey will end their terms due to other commitments. Chair Matheson thanked all for their service.

With no further business, the session adjourned at 4:55 p.m.

MAY REPORT TO THE PRESIDENTIAL COMMITTEE ON ATHLETICS

BASEBALL Season Record: 26-16 Overall, 11-7 BlG Head Coach: Rick Heller Next Event: Wednesday vs. Western Illinois at 6:05 p.m. -Duane Banks Field - Iowa City, Iowa Notables: With five straight Big Ten series wins, the Hawkeyes sit in fourth place of the conference standings at 11-7. Iowa is a season-high 10 games over .500 with notable recent wins over No. 30 Nebraska and a sweep of No. 23 Illinois.

Iowa is hitting .268 as a team -- the fourth best in the Big Ten. Junior Austin Martin's .318 batting average leads the team, followed by sophomore lzaya Fulllard's .286 clip. Junior Ben Norman leads Iowa with 30 RBIs and senior Chris Whelan leads Iowa with a .458 on-base percentage.

Junior Zeb Adreon earned Big Ten Player of the Week and freshman Brendan Sher earned Big Ten Freshman of the Week for their outstanding play in Iowa's series win at Ohio State. Adreon and Sher both recorded their first career home runs, while Adreon hit .556 on the week.

Senior Cole McDonald (4-3, 3.66 ERA) and junior Grant Judkins (4-5, 2.11 ERA) lead the Hawkeye pitching staff that ranks sixth in the Big Ten with a 4.07 ERA. McDonald has thrown four straight quality starts, earning three wins.

Redshirt junior and closer Grant Leonard (2-1, 1.17 ERA, 10 saves) was recently named to the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Midseason List. Leonard has not allowed a run in his last 14 innings pitched. Leonard's 10 saves this season tie a single season record at Iowa, while his 12 career saves are tied for the seventh most in Hawkeye history.

MEN'S GOLF Head Coach: Tyler Stith Next Event: May 13-15 at NCAA Regionals Notables: Junior Alex Schaake was named Big Ten Men's Golf Player of the Year, in addition to earning unanimous first-team All-Big Ten honors and earning the Les Bolstad Award, which is awarded to the Big Ten player with the lowest stroke average (70.81). Schaake is the third Hawkeye in program history to earn Player of the Year accolades and is the first Hawkeye voted to the all­conference first team since his brother Carson, in 2015. Schaake is the first Hawkeye to be a unanimous selection in five years. Classmate Benton Weinberg was recognized on the All-Big Ten Second Team. Six different Hawkeye men's golfers have earned All-Big Ten First Team laurels seven times this decade.

Iowa won the 13-team Hawkeye Invitational last month by posting a 54-hole score of 809 (-43), shattering the school record by a staggering 24 strokes. Schaake and

senior Matthew Walker claimed co-medalist honors with a school 54-hole record total of 199 (-14). The Hawkeye duo's score of 199 set a school record for 54 holes by four strokes. Schaake and Walker were tabbed Big Ten co­Players of the Week for their historic performance. Additionally, the Hawkeyes' first round score of 262 (-22) set a program record for 18-holes.

Iowa and freshman Gonzalo Leal Montero placed 11th at the Big Ten Championships, held at the par-70 Wissahickon Course in Philadelphia.

Schaake leads Iowa with a 70.81 scoring average, low round of 63 (-8), five top-10 finishes, six top-20 finishes, and 16 rounds at or below par.

WOMEN'S GOLF Head Coach: Megan Menzel Notables: Freshman Manuela Lizarazu carded a 36-hole score of 151 (+7), tying for 42nd at the Big Ten Championships. She tallied two birdies in the first round. Lizarazu also earned an eighth-place finish at the Bruzzy Challenge, posting a third-round score of 73 (+1) to finish with a career-best, 54-hole score of 214 (-2).

MEN'S GYMNASTICS Head Coach: JD Reive Notables: Three University Hawkeyes earned All-America honors at the NCAA Championships. Freshman Stewart Brown and senior Jake Brodarzon earned the honors on parallel bars with a fifth and seventh-place finish, respectively. Junior Andrew Herrador earned All-America status with an eighth place finish on high bar. Reive and his staff were named Central Region Staff of the Year after leading Iowa to a share of the regular season Big Ten title.

WOMEN'S GYMNASTICS Head Coach: Larissa Libby Notables: The GymHawks qualified for their 19th Regional appearance under Libby, competing at the NCAA Corvallis Regional. Iowa beat Arizona 195.850 to 194.550, to advance to the second day of the regional. Freshman Lauren Guerin earned her seventh 9.900 of the season on floor. Senior Nicole Chow won the bars title (9.900). Junior Clair Kaji and Chow both earned 9.850s on beam.

The GymHawks took sixth out of 10 with a score of 196.075 - their third highest score of the season - at the BlG Championships. Kaji was named first team All-Big Ten, while senior Chow and freshman Guerin earned second team All-Big Ten honors.

ROWING

Head Coach: Andrew Carter Next Event: May 19 at BlG Championships - Devils Lake, Wisconsin Notables: The Hawkeyes wrapped the 2019 Longhorn Invitational at Lake Walter E. Long with two first-place finishes. Iowa finished third overall behind No. 4 Texas and No. 10 Virginia, defeating No. 16 Indiana in total points.

The 1V8 defeated No. 10 Virginia, No. 18 Oregon State, and No. 20 Oklahoma to continue their success from earlier this season. The crew posted a time of 6:25.600. The 1V8 also took second behind No. 4 Texas on Saturday, defeating Virginia and Indiana.

SOFTBALL Season Record: 18-28 Overall, 4-16 BlG Head Coach: Renee Gillispie Next Event: Friday vs. Ohio State at 5:30 p.m. - Pearl Field - Iowa City, Iowa Notables: The Hawkeyes lead the Big Ten with 14 triples on the season and rank 16th in the country with .34 per game.

Sophomore Aralee Bogar is 24-for-27 stealing bases this season. She leads the Big Ten with 24 stolen bases.

Freshman Cameron Cecil had the Huskers' number during the Iowa and Nebraska's doubleheader on April 24. Cecil registered four hits, going 4-6 on the day with a RBI and a run scored. She is batting .33 over her last five games.

Sophomore Sarah Lehman was Iowa's number one pitcher against Drake and Rutgers. Lehman threw a total of 17 inning with 11 strikeouts. She set a career-high of three strikeouts against Rutgers on April 19.

The Hawkeyes have been quick to strike. In games, the Hawkeyes score first, they are 16-1 and Iowa is 10-2 when scoring in the first inning.

MEN'S TENNIS Season Record: 18-10 Overall, 6-5 BlG Head Coach: Ross Wilson Notables: The Hawkeyes finished the season with 18 overall victories, which ties for the third highest total in Iowa single­season history and are the most since 1991 (18). Iowa recorded six Big Ten wins and tied for fifth place in the Big Ten standings - its best finish in conference play since 1993. Iowa posted 14 wins at the Hawkeye Tennis & Recreation Complex, the most home wins in a single season in program history.

Iowa was ranked in the top-SO nationally the last five weeks of the season, and beat seven of the 12 NCAA Tournament qualifiers they faced this season.

Redshirt junior Kareem Allaf was named second-team All-Big Ten, becoming the third All-Big Ten performer from Iowa over the last five seasons.

Sophomore Will Davies and freshman Oliver Okonkwo won 28 and 27 singles matches, respectively. Davies' 28 wins are third most in a single-season in program history, while Okonkwo's 27 victories are fourth most in a single­season in program history and most by an Iowa freshman in a single-season.

WOMEN'S TENNIS Season Record: 13-12 Overall, 4-7 BlG Head Coach: Sasha Schmid Notables: The Hawkeyes finished the season with a close 4-3 loss to No. 2 Wisconsin in the Big Ten Tournament. The No. 10 Hawkeyes advanced to the conference tournament for the second time in three years. Iowa won its quarterfinal match against No. 7 Indiana, 4-2, to advance to the quarterfinals for the first time in five seasons.

The Hawkeyes finished with 13 wins, their second highest win total in nine years.

MEN'S TRACK & FIELD

Head Coach: Joey Woody Next Event: May 10-12 at BlG Championships - Francis X. Cretzmeyer Track - Iowa City, Iowa Notables: The Hawkeyes are ranked No. 16 in the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Week 5 poll. Junior Nathan Mylenek broke the 3,000-meter steeplechase school record (8:38.53) at the Mt. SAC Relays, running nearly 10 seconds faster than Deacon Jones' 1956 record. Iowa finished second at the Drake Relays with 23 points, scoring in the 3,200-meter relay, 1,600-meter relay, sprint medley relay, and distance medley relay.

WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD

Head Coach: Joey Woody Next Event: May 10-12 at BlG Championships - Francis X. Cretzmeyer Track - Iowa City, Iowa Notables: The Hawkeyes are ranked No. 16 in the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Week 5 poll. The team won the Drake Relays, scoring 26 points -- winning the sprint medley relay and earning runner-up finishes in the 1,600 and 3,200-meter relays. The 3,200-meter relay squad of freshman Grace McCabe, and juniors Taylor Arco, Tia Saunders, and Mallory King, shattered the school record by nearly 15 seconds with their 8:31.84. Junior Laulauga Tausaga broke three school records in California, including the hammer (61.34 meters, 201-3), discus (62.28 meters, 204-4), and shot put (18.02 meters, 59-11/2).
