MINUTESOFTHEBOARDTRAINING–February6,2019TheBoardofEducationoftheAlpineSchoolDistrictmetinaprofessionaldevelopmenttrainingonWednesday,February6,2019at8:00A.M.attheEducationServiceCenter.Boardmemberspresent:BoardPresidentS.ScottCarlson,VicePresidentMarkJ.Clement,SarahBeeson,AmberBonner,SaraM.Hacken,JulieKing,andAdaWilson.Alsopresent:SuperintendentSamuelY.Jarman,BusinessAdministratorRobertW.Smith,andmembersoftheadministrativestaff.Thereweretwoothersinattendance.
SuperintendentJarmanreviewedtheprocessusedtodetermineschoolclosureonasnowday.ScottCarlsonandMarkClementreviewedtheAlpineSchoolDistrictBoardHandbook.Therewasdiscussionaboutcollaborationandeffectivecommunicationamongtheboardandcabinetmembers.TheBoardreviewedthegoalssetin2018andhowtheyarecontinuingtobeemphasized.Thegoalsincludedattracting,hiringandretainingthebestandbrightestteachersandfocusingonacomprehensivecurriculum.Staffmemberssharedtheeffortsandaccomplishmentsbeingmadetoreachthesegoals.Thegraduationratefor2018was92%.ThefocusonreadingproficiencyhasbecomeaK-12effort.StaffalsosharedthatASDhas21elementaryschoolsthathavereceivedtheBeverlyTaylorSorensenGrantfortheirartandmusicprograms.Thisequatesto$1.2milliondollarsthisyear.
MarkClementsharedtherequirementforboardmemberstocompletetheUtahSchoolBoardsAssociationMasterBoards.Itisrequiredbystatelawforboardmemberstoreceivethetrainingaboutopenmeetinglaws,etc. BusinessAdministratorRobSmithpresentedontheprocessinvolvedinpurchasingpropertyforfutureschools.Hesharedtheinformationregardingpropertythathasbeenpurchasedandlandthatisstillpending.Healsodiscussedthe2019legislativesessionandthebillsthatarerelevanttoeducation.JessChristen,AdministratorofOperations,reviewedtheschoolprioritylistbasedontheseismicstudy.Healsogaveanoverviewofthecapitalneedsthroughoutthedistrict,explainingthatasphalt,roofingandHVACarethebiggestcapitalexpendituresforthedistrict.AssistantSuperintendentDr.JohnPattengaveasummaryofhowthedecisiontoconsolidateHillcrestandSceraParkcameabout.Hediscussedthedistrict’sphilosophyregardingschoolsizeandthedecisionthatwasmadetowatchelementaryschoolswhoseenrollmentfallsbelow450orabove900studentstodetermineifadjustmentsareneeded.Dr.Pattenreviewedthedistrict’senrollmentnumbersasofJanuary31,2019.Healsoledadiscussionaboutthecoachingmodelthathasbeenimplementedinourschools.Theseincludeelementaryinstructionalcoaches,K-12innovativelearningcoaches,secondaryPLCandcontentareacoaches.Dr.GarrickPeterson,AdministratorofEducationServices,sharedthehistoryofhowthecoachingmodelbeganinASD.Heexplainedthatprovidingcoachesandeffectiveprofessionaldevelopmentisanefforttoinvestinteachersandtobuildtheircapacitytoimprovestudentlearning.

NamingofNewMiddleSchoolinSaratogaSpringsPrincipalMarkWhitakerandmembersofhisnamingcommitteesharedtheprocessforselectingthenameforthenewschool.TheysentoutasurveytoparentswithK-8studentsandtherewere600submissions,whichwerenarroweddowntotennames.PrincipalWhitakersentasurveytothestudentcouncilsinthefeederschoolsandtheoptionswerenarroweddowntothetopthreenamesforthemiddleschool:

ThemascotwillbetheWarriorsandthecolorswillbeselectedtorepresentthelandscapeinthearea.Markaddressedquestionsfromtheboard.ThiswillbemovedtoanactionitemattheFebruary26thboardmeeting.

AdaWilsonreportedonaworkshopsheattendedatUtahValleyUniversity,UnconsciousBiasWorkshop:FromAwarenesstoAction.TheconferencewassponsoredbytheUVUWomenandLeadershipProject.ShealsothankedRobSmithforrepresentingASDasheaddressedtherepublicancaucus.
SarahBeesonreportedontheSCCmeetingsheattendedatBarrattElementary.Shesaidthattheir‘ObserveandServe’programisprovidingawayforchildrentoconnectandmakefriendswithotherstudents.

LEASE SPACE IN AMERICAN FORK, UTAH, FOR A PROPOSED SCHOOL SITE
WHEREAS, it is deemed desirable and in the best interests of the Alpine School District that the following action be taken by the ASD Board of Education, pursuant to this Resolution, NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that, pursuant to applicable law, the Board of Education of the Alpine School District, hereby consent to, approve and adopt the following:
