3. MERSETA Success Story: Ms Rajes Padayachie from SJM Flex gave a brief presentation on their success story on funding training through MERSETA. (See presentation attached.) Several important points were raised to remember:

Annual submission of the WSP – to claim back skills levy spend

Annual Training Plan is included in the WSP

Training Plan is then used to apply for discretionary grants

Skills are matched to grant application eg. Look at the training need and what would be funded by MERSETA.

Perfect time to call your respective CLO and ask guidance as to what can be claimed for when the discretionary grants window opens

Discretionary Grant Application Criteria:

List available from MERSETA: Pivitol Training, Apprenticeships, Skills programmes, Learnerships.

Use the service providers listed on MERSETA website.

MERSETA Future Plans:

MERSETA will continue as is until end 2018;

SETA changes have been gazette for public comment and timeframe/period for public comments closes on 29 February 2016.

MERSETA Landscape meeting taking place on 17 February 2016, to discuss with sector members the possible structure / operation of MERSEAT after 2018

Gerald will attend the landscaping meeting and give feedback to the group.

Common Training Program:

Lumotech and SJM Flex are accredited MERSETA training providers;

Members agreed it is a good idea to have a common training program offered at Lumotech (Uitenhage) and SJM Flex (Port Elizabeth) and collectively apply for funding from MERSETA;

Rajes and Gerald will meet to select specific unit standards from MERSETA training program and send it to KBP;

KBP will circulate list with selected unit standards to other members, to obtain interest in participating;

Participating members will identify staff for the training (need to be able to release them in work time / configure for payment of stipend for weekend training;

Funding calls open in short windows 2x per annum - next window closes 31 March 2016, second round in October;

4. ECAIF Network Skills Pool

Members agreed that it would be beneficial to have a network/database/bulletin board to facilitate the pool of resources with details of individuals who had been trained within the sector either in-house by members or through MERSETA programs. 5. Review of Previous Minutes

Following the previous Skills Development WG meeting, KBP met with CDC and Harambee to discuss possible collaboration with regards to screening of suitable candidates for training (unemployed), and the ECAIF Network Skills Pool.

The Mercedes Benz Training Academy in East London could potentially be a host for common training in East London in the future.

6. General Discussion Mr Funston referred to his previous experience in East London - a network of 5/6 companies combined to pay for individuals to do a 2 year training program, based on the Master Artisan Academy. The program had shown good results, and could be used as a basis for common training. Candidates within the training / who have completed could also be captured within the skills pool.

All members present said they would be able to host a meeting in the future.

Members want time-frames set with clear objectives to measure progress of the working group.
