College of Sciences and Mathematics, Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs
Minority High School Visitation Day 2011, hosted by the Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs (ODMA) in the College of Sciences and Mathematics (COSAM), was held on Thursday, Oct. 20, 2011, from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Auburn University Student Center Ballroom. The participation of administrators, faculty, staff and student volunteers made COSAM’s 8th Annual Minority High School Visitation Day 2011 a huge success. The total attendance was 128. High
schools represented included Daphne, Southwest DeKalb, Dawson Street Christian School, Stanhope Elmore, Loachapoka, Muscle Shoals, Holy Innocent’s Episcopal, Opelika, Smith’s Station, and counselors representing several Shelby County schools. Volunteers, including two COSAM Leaders, arrived early to receive instructions related to their various assigned stations. A light
breakfast was provided for our guests during registration. Charles Savrda, interim dean COSAM, enthusiastically welcomed participants. The greetings were brought by Timothy Boosinger, interim provost and vice-president of Academic Affairs, Ainsley Carry, vice president for Student Affairs, and Lawrence Wit, COSAM’s associate dean for Student Affairs. Bianca Evans, minority programs coordinator for COSAM Diversity and Multicultural Affairs, also extended greetings and introduced Session I: Recruiting, Financial Services and Scholarships. After a brief break, Session II: Academic and Pre-Professional Programs followed. Our special lunch guests were stationed at designated tables where students sat and engaged in lively discussions with faculty in their major field of interest. After lunch, Session III highlighted COSAM ODMA’s student support programs and student organizations. Eddrina Miller, Kyle Adams, Marissa Bolling and representatives from four student organizations in COSAM participated in the panel discussion. The program concluded with closing remarks. Participants were then released to the student recruiters for the event-ending Auburn University campus tour.
