“Spectacular” is the only word to describe the past year at the Minnesota Zoo.Several years of planning, building and program development culminated in the most successful year in the history of the Zoo. A major highlight was the first full year of operation of the Zoo’s largest and most ambitious project ever: Russia’s Grizzly Coast and the newly renovated Central Plaza.

Thanks to this revitalization of the Zoo, our attendance reached an all-time high of 1,355,260 guests, and our membership rolls grew to record levels as well—to over 44,000 households representing more than 175,000 individuals. Since 2005, these important metrics of success have increased by 40 percent and 49 percent, respectively, which is remarkable and unprecedented growth, particularly given the challenging economic climate.

We also celebrated the continued growth of the fund-raising activities that support the Zoo’s conservation and education initiatives. The Minnesota Zoo Foundation raised more than $4.8 million in fiscal year 2009. Current and former Zoo and Foundation Board members successfully met a $3 million challenge from the edward Dayton Family Fund, raising more than $6 million in cash and pledges for the Zoo.

We salute as well generous and increased commitments from many of our corporate and foundation partners, including Best Buy Children’s Foundation, Flint Hills Resources, General Mills Foundation, KAyTee Products, Inc., Land O’ Lakes Foundation, Target, U.S. Bancorp Foundation, and Wells Fargo Foundation Minnesota. Coupled with strong operating and capital support from the State of Minnesota, this extraordinary support from our community partners assures a vibrant present and even brighter future for the Zoo.

Our Zoo participated in a study to understand why Minnesota’s moose population is in decline, and we traveled far and wide with Zoomobile – from Baudette to Blue earth, from Roseau to Rochester. We also redesigned our Zoo web site (mnzoo.org), and received numerous awards for exhibit design excellence, conservation effectiveness, creative marketing efforts, innovative educational activities, and for our contributions to the cultural and economic fabric of Minnesota. All of this underscores the progress the Zoo has made in realizing its five-year Strategic Plan goals.

We set out four years ago with the ambitious goal of becoming one of America’s top 10 zoos. Through your generous support, we are well on our way to achieving this vision. On behalf of the Trustees and staff of the Minnesota Zoo and the Minnesota Zoo Foundation, we thank you.

achievementA year of Heightened Achievement

This past year, the Minnesota Zoo exceeded even the most optimistic of expectations—no easy feat in these tough economic times. The Zoo not only set an all-time high attendance record but we also surpassed our goals for growth in revenue, education, and conservation.Four years ago, the Zoo embarked on a path to achieve excellence and distinction, a path Zoo leadership clearly laid out in a five-year strategic plan. The accomplishments attained in fiscal year 2009 propelled the Zoo toward the end goal of becoming one of the top zoos in the nation, a zoo loved by the community and respected by those who dedicate their careers to the conservation of animals in zoos and the natural world.

exhibits and FacilitiesMinnesotans and citizens of surrounding states have a wide range of recreational activities from which to choose. Competing with those attractions requires that the Zoo invest in major physical improvements including new exhibits. The award-winning Russia’s Grizzly Coast, which opened in June 2008, demonstrates the validity of the “build it and they will come” philosophy.

Record numbers of guests flocked to the Zoo last year to embark on a journey through Russia’s Grizzly Coast, a vast wilderness where playful sea otters demonstrate great dexterity, massive grizzly bears forage in a volcanic landscape, and dense forests provide habitat for the rare Amur leopard and its primary prey species, wild boars.

The stunning exhibit, designed for optimal viewing opportunities as well as to raise awareness of one of the world’s last great areas of wilderness, helped bring 1,355,260 guests to the Zoo in fiscal year 2009, far exceeding our optimistic forecast of 1.2 million. Russia’s Grizzly Coast also played a key role in the 21 percent jump in memberships from 36,538 in 2008 to 44,233 households this year. Record revenues beat expectations as well, climbing from $19.5 million in 2008 to $21.7 million.

Guest experienceAnother of the Zoo’s major goals has been to continually improve our guest experience. As a result, the Zoo has been able to increase memberships, which have risen by 49 percent over the past five years. Many of these memberships belong to families with young children who visit the Zoo frequently.

The Zoo’s commitment to its goals can also be seen in its response to repeated requests from its guests to see African animals; we responded with this summer’s Africa! exhibit. The mixed-species exhibit offered a genuine taste of east Africa’s Serengeti and the vast South African grasslands, while providing unique opportunities for guests to observe herd behaviors and inter-species interactions exhibited by giraffe, zebra, ostrich, wildebeest, and gemsbok.

To permanently address the strong interest in African exhibits, the Zoo is building an African rainforest exhibit that will open next year. A new Tropics Trail exhibit will feature dwarf crocodiles, bats, monkeys, and the very striking and rather elegant Red River hogs.

educationDesigning exhibits to educate the public about animals, their habitat needs and the conservation issues facing them in the wild has long been a hallmark of the Minnesota Zoo. Current leadership has given it renewed emphasis. This mission to connect people, animals and the natural world allows for unique educational experiences.

Zoo Safari, one of the Zoo’s fastest growing educational programs, more than doubled in size in fiscal year 2009 with more than 11,000 public school children from eight school districts sent on day trips. Made possible through corporate and individual sponsorships, Zoo Safaris meet science requirements for either third-or fifth-grade curricula. While on safari, students receive transportation to and from the Zoo, admission, an interpretive monorail tour, and the choice between a naturalist-led class on conservation or a guided tour.

Initiated in 1999 by the McGuire Family Foundation, Zoo Safari was initially extended to all St. Paul public school third graders. In the 2008-09 school year, Target sponsored all fifth graders in Minneapolis public schools, the first year both metro districts participated. The other six districts and their sponsors are: Rochester, McGuire Family Foundation; Austin and Faribault, Hormel Foods Corporation; Red Wing, Red Wing Shoe Company Foundation; Northfield, Malt-O-Meal Company; and Rosemount/Apple Valley/eagan, Flint Hills Resources.

Zoo animals serve as ambassadors for their species...

Connecting with the natural worldThe Zoo’s mission to connect people, animals and the natural world by providing top-notch educational and recreational experiences is inextricably linked with its bottom line goal of conserving animals in zoos and in the wild.

Zoo animals serve as ambassadors for their species and nowhere has that become more evident than in the conservation science cabin in Russia’s Grizzly Coast, where guests can choose which of the exhibit’s animals they want to support using an innovative, informative donation kiosk.

During fiscal year 2009, the Amur leopards and tigers received $5,000 in donations that will help support anti-poaching activities and public education programs in the Russian Far east. The sea otters took in $4,500 to reimburse the organization that rescued and rehabilitated them and to help pay for ongoing sea otter programs. The grizzlies raised $4,400 that will help fund ongoing brown bear conservation and research in the Russian Far east. On top of those funds, the Zoo raised an additional $20,000 to fund Amur leopard conservation efforts in Russia.

The Zoo also partnered with The Nature Conservancy to work with Save the Rhino Trust, a Namibian non-profit whose mission is to help expand the range of the critically-endangered desert black rhino. The organizations also partnered to hire a field conservation biologist for the project.

The breadth and scope of the Ulysses S. Seal Conservation Grants Program also has grown. Last year, the program—which champions causes specifically chosen by Zoo employees—provided grants totaling nearly $40,000 spread across 18 projects in 13 countries, including five projects in the Great Lakes region that focused on butterflies, Massasauga rattlesnakes, moose, bobcats, and lynx.

The Zoo also reached an important milestone last year in its work with the South China tiger, a cat thought to be extinct in the wild. The world’s approximately 80 remaining South China tigers live in zoos and will potentially provide offspring to be released into the wild within 5 to 7 years in Hupingshan-Houhe National Nature Reserve Complex, a wilderness area in China the size of the Twin Cities’ 494/694 beltway. The Zoo will next work with a team of biologists on reintroducing wild boar and deer—the cat’s primary prey species—into the area in 2010 and 2011.

Work like this, as well as the Zoo’s efforts to create density and intensity of experience in the core of the Zoo, has elevated the Zoo’s status in the community and among our professional peers. By providing a safe, natural habitat for some of the world’s rarest creatures, as well as for some of its most common, the Zoo is forging critical links between our animals and those who want to learn about them and their standing in the natural world.

“In a time of crisis to have the beautiful gift of nature, a day at the Minnesota Zoo brings peace, tranquility and joy to otherwise chaotic lives. It creates wonderful fun memories and opportunities for families to heal. The Minnesota Zoo is truly a great resource for our community, and we are grateful for their support of our most vulnerable families.”

The Zoo was a special place for Beverly Stark, who often enjoyed spending time here with her grandchildren. Although Beverly’s failing health made it physically challenging, she attended a wedding reception in Discovery Bay shortly before her death. It was one of the last times the family was together. Beverly’s daughter Kim and other family members agreed that Discovery Bay would be the best place to have a memorial for their mother, and they purchased a bench with a memorial plaque.

Recently, the family visited the Zoo and gathered for a photo on “grandma’s bench.” Lydia, one of Beverly’s grandchildren, was among the group. For the past two weeks Lydia had a very loose tooth and refused to pull it out until her mother, Kim, suggested that she pull it out while sitting on “grandma’s bench.” With great respect for grandma and one tug, the tooth was out. Kim says, “This story that happened in such a special place is one that will bring smiles to our faces for many years to come.”

The Sarnos always have enjoyed animals, but after visiting Russia’s Grizzly Coast, they immediately knew they wanted to become more involved at the Zoo. Stacy says, “After hearing Director Lee Ehmke’s vision for the future, we knew that we made the right choice in supporting the Zoo.” The Sarnos became “Friends of the Minnesota Zoo” and have enjoyed many of the opportunities offered by the giving society. “There is nothing better than spending the day with our son at the Zoo any time of year,” says Stacy.

2009 beastly ball

More than 550 guests attended the 2009 Beastly Ball, raising nearly $400,000 for the Minnesota Zoo’s conservation and education initiatives. Joining Honorary Chairs Jeannine Rivet and Warren Herreid (far right) were (left to right) WCCO-TV Anchor Don Shelby; Foundation Executive Director Melissa Lindsay; Beastly Ball Chairs Richard and Susan Milteer; Bronx Zoo Vice President for Planning and Design Sue Chin; and Zoo Director/CEO Lee Ehmke.

General mills Foundation

General Mills Foundation provided an outstanding gift to the Minnesota Zoo in 2009 for the new Woodland Adventure, a nature based play area. Ellen Luger, Executive Director of the General Mills Foundation said, “Our mission at General Mills is to nourish lives, nourish communities and nourish the future. The Woodland Adventure here at the Zoo represents a powerful way for the General Mills Foundation to carry out that mission.” In addition to its gift to help create Woodland Adventure, General Mills Foundation provided support for the new Zoo Champions program, which started in July 2009. Zoo Champions is an educational activity guide for kids and families, teaching about our animals and promoting youth nutrition and fitness.

hormel Foods corporation

Since 1997, with a gift to help build the Wells Fargo Family Farm, Hormel Foods Corporation has donated more than $800,000 to the Minnesota Zoo. Its 2009 gift supported the award-winning Wells Fargo Family Farm operations; underwrote field trips for more than 650 3rd grade students from Austin, Minnesota through the Minnesota Zoo Safari Program; and sent students from Willmar, Minnesota on an overnight program to the Zoo. Corporate support from Hormel extends the reach of Zoo programming into Greater Minnesota and allows us to work with students who may not otherwise be able to visit the Zoo.
