Loons Close Out Homestand Against Sounders FCMinnesota United completes its three-game homestand on Saturday night as Seattle Sounders FC visits Allianz Field. Seattle has bested Minnesota in all four previous meetings, snatching a stoppage time win in the last meeting back in 2018. After a hot start to the season, Sounders FC have gone winless in their last three games, most recently drawing 1-1 with 10 men at home against LAFC. The Loons have held LA Galaxy and D.C. United, two of the top teams in MLS, scoreless in their last two outings and will look to keep the streak going on Saturday night. It will be a clash of potent attackers and stingy defenses, with both teams among the best in goals scored and shutouts this season, as the Loons try to climb up the table.
MNUFC Gets First Win at Allianz FieldMinnesota United got its first win at Allianz Field in its third game in the new stadium, claiming a 1-0 win against D.C. United thanks to some late-game theatrics. The visitors thought they had the opening goal in the 21st minute, but Video Review called the play back for a foul in the penalty area on D.C.’s Frederic Brillant. Minnesota began to take control of the game as the final whistle approached, using pace on the wings to torment the D.C. defenders. Minnesota found the lone goal of the game in the 82nd minute when Angelo Rodriguez touched a service from Romain Metanire past D.C. goalkeeper Bill Hamid. The Loons held on to the lead, stymieing a late charge from the visitors, and claiming its first home win of the year.

MNUFC GAME NOTES
• Vito Mannone has shut out opponents in the past two games. This is the first time MNUFC has not allowed a goal in consecutive games since joining MLS.
• If Mannone does not allow a goal in the first 11 minutes of Saturday’s game, he will claim the longest scoreless streak in the club’s MLS history. The record is currently 201 minutes, set by Bobby Shuttleworth from April 28 to May 9 in 2018.
• Romain Metanire provided his fourth assist of the season last week against D.C. and now leads the Loons in that category.
• Metanire’s assist was his first game-winner since joining MNUFC.
• Metanire made the MLS Team of the Week for Week 9. This was his second time being named to the Team of the Week this year, last being honored in Week 2.
• Angelo Rodriguez’s goal against D.C. was his first game-winner of 2019.
• Ethan Finlay scored his first goal for Minnesota against Seattle on August 20, 2017.
• Osvaldo Alonso will make his 300th MLS start the next time he is in the starting XI for the Loons. He has 275 starts in the regular season and 24 in the playoffs.
• Abu Danladi made his 50th MLS appearance last game against D.C.
• Minnesota and Seattle both have 18 goals on the year, tied for the fourth-most in MLS.
• Sounders FC will be without Kelvin Leerdam this game. He is serving one-game suspension after receiving a red card in the last game against LAFC.
• Cristian Roldan was also ejected from the LAFC game, but the decision was successfully appealed by Seattle and he is eligible to play Saturday.
• Seattle is 1-1-1 on the road this year.
• Minnesota has scored three or more goals four times, a league-best.
• Stefan Frei is tied for the most saves in the league with 36 through nine games.
• Frei and Mannone both have three clean sheets on the year.

MNUFC GAME NOTES
2015 MINNESOTA UNITED FC GOAL MAPMINNESOTA UNITED NEWS AND NOTES
MNUFC Defender Romain Metanire Makes Team of the Week For his role in keeping two clean sheets at home last week, Romain Metanire was named to the MLS Team of the Week for Week 9. This is Metanire’s second time earning the honor this year, last making the Team of the Week in Week 2.
The Madagascar international was a major factor on both sides of the ball in the 0-0 draw with LA Galaxy and the 1-0 win over D.C. United at Allianz Field. He torched the visitors with blistering runs and precision passes down the flanks to create chances, while also frustrating attackers with tenacious defending. Over the course of the two games, he completed 76 passes, made three key tackles and intercepted three passes. He also provided the assist to the game-winning goal against D.C. He now leads the Loons with four assists on the year.
Head Coach Adrian Heath on the Challenge Presented by Seattle “I’ve got an enormous amount of respect for Brian Schmetzer and their staff. It’s a proper run football club, I think. It’s gonna be [Nico] Lodeiro. Is [Raul] Ruidiaz going to be back? Jordan Morris is an international player. They’ve got good players all around. Obviously it looks like they’ll miss a couple of players, which will be a benefit to us. But no doubt that this is a well-established club and they’ve got a deep squad of players. Whoever they put out is going to be highly motivated and we know it’s going to be tough.”
Goalkeeper Vito Mannone on the Last Two Clean Sheets“It’s a mix of everything, I think. We’re getting to know each other, of course, because game by game, you go out and you know more about each other out there. But getting to know Allianz Field, the crowd, the moments, how to deal with moments in the game and game time gives you the experience to be more united and do the right job. We’ve done it against tough opponents so from now on we set up the standards and we need to maintain them.”
Osvaldo Alonso on What He’s Expecting From His Former Team“Seattle is a great team, even though they’ve had a couple setbacks in their last few games, we have to think about ourselves, at home, coming out with everything and getting three points. Obviously, it’ll be tough in the sense that I’m playing against my former club, but the mentality of this team three points on the table for us to get and I think we’re ready to do it.”
Minnesota United Night at Target FieldThe Twins organization is proud to collaborate with the Minnesota United to celebrate our Minnesota sports fandom. MNUFC players Osvaldo Alonso, Miguel Ibarra, Angelo Rodriguez, Vito Mannone, Jan Gregus, Michael Boxall and Dayne St. Claire were all introduced pre-game on the field before Alonso through the honorary first pitch, including a special appearance by PK Loon. Later on in the evening, Mannone and Gregus met with fans at the Twins Digital Clubhouse and Alonso met Cuban Twins legend Tony Oliva.
MNUFC Players visit with Chambers of CommerceOn Wednesday, May 1 the Midway Chamber, Minneapolis Regional Chamber and Saint Paul Area Chamber of Commerce held the MNUFC Kickoff Reception at Allianz Field presented by Taylor Communications. Attendees were welcomed by MNUFC broadcasters, mingled with coaches and got autographs from Ethan Finlay, Brent Kallman, Chase Gasper and Hassani Dotson all while enjoying the view from the Stadium Club.
Unified Team TryoutsOn Thursday April 25th, Minnesota United and Special Olympic of Minnesota teamed up to hold tryouts at the National Sport Center for the official Minnesota United Unified soccer team. In effort by Major league soccer, ESPN and Special Olympics to promote the game of soccer, the Unified Team welcomes everyone, regardless of race, color, religion, national origin, gender and disability. The Unified team also promotes the 2nd annual Soccer For All movement which fosters inclusivity no matter who you are. Roughly 30 adults ranging from ages 18-29 years arrived to try out for the team.
Once everyone settled into the indoor training field at National Sport Center (NSC) Sports Hall, there was a surprise waiting for the athletes. Minnesota United Analyst Kyndra de St. Aubin was on the field waiting for the athletes to join her on the field when they entered the Sports Hall at NSC. Players who will be selected for the official Unified team will get to sign their contract mid-May and will have the opportunity to represent Minnesota United in two games later this year, first in Colorado on June 8 and again at home in Allianz Field on August 14. Everyone was so excited for the opportunity to highlight their skills. The game is about uniting people from different background to have fun and play the beautiful game.

Minnesota United FC plays in North America’s top professional soccer league, Major League Soccer (MLS). The league features 24 teams from across the United States and Canada.
After a successful bid to host the FIFA World Cup in 1994, the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) founded MLS to bring a top-level soccer league back to the country for the first time since 1984, when the original NASL folded. The league was set to begin play in 1996 with 10 teams: Colorado Rapids, Columbus Crew (SC), D.C. United, Dallas Burn (FC Dallas), Kansas City Wiz (Sporting Kansas City), Los Angeles Galaxy, New England Revolution, NY/NJ MetroStars (New York Red Bulls), San Jose Clash (Earthquakes) and Tampa Bay Mutiny.
The league’s first game was played on April 6, 1996 as the San Jose Clash played D.C. United in front of 31,000 fans at Spartan Stadium. The league drew large crowds in its opening season, pulling star power from around North America and building on the excitement of the 1994 FIFA World Cup.
As MLS has continued to grow, clubs have begun moving out of shared American football venues and into soccer-specific stadium, led by Columbus Crew (SC), who moved into the soccer-specific MAPFRE Stadium in 1999. Currently, 20 teams play in soccer-specific venues.
The league is split into the Eastern and Western Conferences. Each team plays 34 games during the season. Teams play all conference opponents twice, once at home and once on the road, and each team in the other conference once, with an even balance of home and away games. The top seven teams in each conference at the end of the year qualify for the MLS Cup Playoffs.
Starting in 2019, the league has adopted a new single-elimination format for the entirety of the MLS Cup Playoffs. The top seven teams in each conference qualify for postseason, with the regular-season conference champions receiving a first-round bye. The second through seventh seeds will play the opening round games, with the highest seed hosting games throughout the tournament. The winners will move on to join the one-seed teams in the conference semifinals. The winner of each conference championship will move on the the MLS Cup Final. The team with the best regular season record will host the final.

At just 26 years old, Calvo has the potential to be a familiar name in Minnesota for years to come. Whether playing at left back or center back, the MNUFC captain does well to stretch the pitch and create imbalances in the attack. During the 2018 season, Calvo started 26 of 26 games played, but missed five games due to international duty with Costa Rica. Calvo also started and played a full 90 minutes for Costa Rica in their 2018 FIFA World Cup Group E opener against Serbia, a 1-0 defeat, and came off the bench in a 2-0 loss to Brazil.

New Zealand international Boxall joined MNUFC on July 12, 2017 after representing his country at the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup in Russia. In his first full season with MNUFC, Boxall started all 32 games of 2018 and scored his first goal with the club on Aug. 11 against LA Galaxy and his second – the winner – in a 3-2 result over Portland on Sept. 22.

Cuban midfielder, Alonso joined MNUFC January 10, 2019 after spending ten seasons with the Seattle Sounders. A proven leader, MLS Cup Champion and four-time MLS All-Star, the “Honey Badger” brings a wealth of MLS experience and tenacity to the Loons’ midfield. In 2018, he started 21 games in 25 game appearances, and for the sixth time in his 10-year career, recorded three assists during the regular season.

He had a superb debut season with the Loons, tallying eight goals — including four winners — and three assists in 27 games (15 starts) and finishing second in MLS Rookie of the Year voting. While he missed most of the 2018 season due to injury, Danladi played in 15 games, marking his first goal of 2018 at Vancouver on July 28 and his first assist against LA Galaxy August 11.
