MINOR LEAGUE CLIPS Beresford hit caps comeback win Rochester Red Wings– 5/15/15

James Beresford's two-run single in the bottom of the ninth capped a three-run rally, giving the Rochester Red Wings a 5-4 win over the Lehigh Valley IronPigs Friday night at Frontier Field. Eric Farris had three hits for the Wings, including a solo home run.

Red Wings starter Jason Wheeler was strong in the early going, and got some help from his defense. First baseman Brock Peterson made a diving stop to initiate a double play in the top of the first.

Farris got the scoring going early for the Wings, as he launched a lead-off home run on the fourth pitch of the game from Severino Gonzalez, his first homer of the season, putting the Wings up 1-0.

The Farris home run was the Wings' only hit of the game until the fourth inning, until Beresford reached base on a double to start off the inning. Second base was where Beresford stayed however, as the Wings were unable to capitalize.

Through five innings, the teams had combined for seven hits off Wheeler and Gonzalez. In the top of the sixth, Tyler Henson picked up his second hit of the game - a double, after a leaping catch attempt by Farris against the wall in center. Logan Moore followed with a single, putting runners at the corners with none out. Chase d'Arnaud's sacrifice fly brought home Henson, and the game was tied 1-1. When Domonic Brown lined a single just over the glove of Peterson at first, Moore scored and the IronPigs had the lead at 2-1. Lehigh Valley added two more runs to take a 4-1 advantage, and prompting Wheeler's exit and Ryan O'Rourke's entrance out of the bullpen.

Wheeler gave up eight hits in 5 2/3 innings - including five hits in the sixth - and allowed four earned runs while striking out two. He did not walk a batter for the second straight start.

The game was delayed for 25 minutes by a downpour and a flash of lightning, but played resumed in the bottom of the sixth inning, with Gonzalez setting down the Wings in order. Gonzalez worked six innings and held the Wings to just four hits and an earned run, with a walk and four strikeouts. Gonzalez threw 97 pitches, 63 for strikes.

O'Rourke struck out the side in the top of the seventh, and the Wings made a bid for a rally against relief pitcher Tyler Knigge. Danny Ortiz lined a double and Eric Fryer walked, but left fielder Cody Asche made a sliding catch to rob Peterson of a base hit. Knigge struck out Jose Martine, but Argenis Diaz drew a walk to load the bases with two out. Farris beat out an infield hit, bringing in Ortiz and cutting the lead to 4-2.

Lester Oliveros worked the eighth and ninth innings, allowing one hit and striking out one.

Colton Murray pitched the ninth for Lehigh Valley, and the Wings made one last bid for a comeback. Peterson walked, moved to second on a single by Martinez, and a walk to Diaz loaded the bases with none out. After Murray (1-2) had a 2-0 count on Farris, the IronPigs brought Seth Rosin out of the bullpen. Farris lined an opposite field single to drive in a run and make it 4-3. Beresford followed by drilling a 1-0 pitch over the head of Asche in left field, bringing home the tying and winning runs.

Oliveros picked up the win, improving his record to 2-0.

Red Wings’ Darnell will sponsor Alzheimer’s night Rochester Democrat & Chronicle– 5/15/15

There's no way Logan Darnell can even count how many times his mother made sure she was at some ball diamond somewhere to watch him play baseball.

The number of times she gave Logan and his older brother, Landon, a ride to their Little League baseball games in Nashville, Tennessee.

How many times she was in the stands during their high school games.

How many times she was in Lexington, Kentucky, or another Southeastern Conference locale when Logan pitched for the University of Kentucky.

"The perfect mom," Logan Darnell said. "The countless Little League games she drug my tail to ... She went to every game. And she cared more about us having fun than the game itself."

Caye Darnell isn't able to watch Logan pitch anymore, however. Alzheimer's disease has made it very difficult for her to travel. Logan is playing in Rochester with the Red Wings for a third season while she's still living in Nashville.

"She's the happiest, kindest woman you'll ever meet," her youngest son said, "but sometimes her mind goes away for a little bit."

Only 58, she has been stricken early by a disease that claimed her mother and father. Her diagnosis came in 2012.

"If you walked up to her on the street you wouldn't know there was anything wrong," Logan said. "But she'll wake up at night and not know where she is."

That uneasiness for her, the potential panic that can develop, makes it difficult for her to stay in unfamiliar settings.

So she won't be at Frontier Field on June 19 when her son pays tribute to her by sponsoring Alzheimer's awareness night. The plans for the evening were unveiled at a Friday afternoon news conference at the stadium.

Darnell is paying for the production of close to 30 jerseys that the Red Wings will wear for the game against the Louisville Bats. The players and coaching staff will autograph the jerseys and they will be sold through auction after the game. The money will go to the Alzheimer's Association, Rochester and Finger Lakes Region.

"We are awed and inspired," said Teresa Galbier, president of the area Alzheimer's Association. "Nothing has ever come our way like this."

To have a player create a fundraising evening is new for the Wings, too. Jersey-auction-for-a-cause events are commonplace for the team, but a corporate sponsor always foots the bill for the uniforms. This is all the 26-year-old Darnell.

It's the left-hander's way of giving back even more than he already does. He was named the Wings most civic-minded player last season and also won an award from Rochester-area social workers.

"Playing baseball here and in Minnesota, I have a platform where I can reach people," said Darnell, who has made 11 relief appearances (1-0, 3.48 ERA) for the Wings this season and pitched in seven games for the Twins last year.

He returns to Nashville in the offseason to help with his mother's care. His father and brother are making sure Caye's needs are taken care of during the season.

"It's tougher on my father and brother; they're there every day," he said. "But I can see big differences (in her condition) going home because I'm gone six or seven months."

His mother has become his inspiration in baseball.

"It's why I want to be successful in this game," he said. "It's almost a dream to have her see me in the big leagues and be established there.

"Baseball is a real mental game. This is making it a positive. If I think negative about it, then it would be overwhelming because of the failure that's a part of this game."

Lookouts win on Sano homer in 10th Chattanooga Times Free Press– 5/15/15

The Chattanooga Lookouts stayed hot by edging the Barons 7-5 in Birmingham in 10 innings after rallying from a 4-1 deficit Friday night.

Third Lookouts pitcher Nick Burdi got the win, and D.J. Johnson notched his third save. Christian Marrero was 3-for-3 with two walks and two runs scored for the Barons.
