Anna Carlson—Patterns on fabric and clothing are much more than mere ornamentation. They are a lan-guage complete with syntax and meaning. The messages can be overt, covert, unifying, or polarizing. We use this language every day to tell those around us who we believe we are and who we want to be. Each of us creates a unique identity by wearing branded t-shirts and designer dresses and by choosing homemade,

hand-made, or manufactured textiles to surround us. Anna Carlson’s presentation will address the ways in which pattern is used to shout or whisper a variety of messages, from propaganda to protest. Following the presentation, she will demonstrate screen printing, itself a repeated action that has been used by activists around the world. Anna challenges everyday codes and contexts with printed and embroidered textiles. Her conceptual work explores self-identity and memory, merging current is-sues with cloth and apparel to examine, trace, and chal-lenge the ways text is used to communicate.

Next Board Meeting

October 7th, 6:00 p.m.

Leah Doherty’s home

By the time that you read this, we will be winding down a beautiful summer in Minne-sota. I hope that you enjoyed yourselves and spent time outside walking, hiking, camp-ing, traveling, gardening, boating, fishing, picnicking, basking in the sun, and all of the other fun things to do in great weather. Those wonderful experiences inspire our art quilt creations, either consciously or unconsciously. Perhaps you got an idea for our new challenge—Changing Times. On to a spectacular fall!

At the August meeting we introduced a new feature, Two Minute Tips. As you heard, we will take a few, brief minutes to give meeting attendees a chance to share a two-minute sewing, quilting, or art tip, a very quick book review, a tool tip, or something fun and helpful. Many other guilds take a couple of minutes to share helpful tips at their meetings and we want to try it as well.

Coming up at the September meeting we will introduce our MCQ board, and they will share what they each do. Our guild maintains its fun atmosphere and high level of crea-tivity through the efforts of our volunteers on the board. We are always very happy to welcome new people! Please consider helping out with your great ideas and talents.

That's all for now, and we'll see you at the fall meetings!

FALL RETREAT AT CAMP WAPO—NANCY CONDON

The Fall MCQ Wapo Retreat will be October 2 through 5. The deadline to sign up is September 25th. We have a few places left for this fun-filled time to sew, chat and get to know one an-other. The registration form is on the website. Send your registration form and check to Leah Doherty.

Camp Wapogasset is near Amery, Wisconsin—a reasonable drive from the Twin Cities. Second floor windows in the sewing area offer views of the lake and grounds. Have you come to a diffi-cult spot in completing your project? Be in-spired by the views or the beauty of a stroll around the camp. Are you energized by seeing other quilters at work? Visit with the members you know and especially with the ones you don’t know. You’ll see techniques and processes that are new to you, and you’ll see fabulous creations in process and completed. If you are a first-time attendee, bring your projects and enthusiasm and you will have a great time quilting and get-ting to know other members.

Above are three quilts made by the small group 9/37 Sisterhood and donated to Camp Wapo. See the article on page 5 to join their next Stash Busters donation project for Camp Wapo.

FROM THE TEXTILE CENTER—TINA HUGHES

The MCQ exhibit Inside, Outside, Upside Down completed a successful run in the Community Gallery and in the Textile Center Library.

The Summer Camp classes ended at the end of August and many children were able to use the brand new sew-ing machines that were donated by MCQ and others.

Guild members can join the Textile Center at the discounted membership rate of $30. This is a very nice dis-count from the regular membership price. To join or renew, call the Textile Center at 612-436-0664 or sign up at the Textile Center shop. One benefit of Textile Center membership is the opportunity to exhibit work in the annual A Common Thread member exhibit.

A Common Thread showcases the exceptional work of Textile Center members. This non-juried exhibition gives every member an opportunity to exhibit their recent work in Textile Center galleries. Apply via our online form. Contact Exhibition Coordinator Kraig Rasmussen with questions. The deadline for entries is October 23rd at 5:00 p.m.

SUNSHINE—JANET HOVDE

If you know of members who are in need of sunshine because of medical issues, losses, etc., please let Janet Hovde know. She will send a Sunshine card from the MCQ guild. Contact her at [email protected] or 651-487-2744.

The membership committee is interested in your Quilt Sister stories. Tell us what you have been doing with your Quilt Sister. Did you e-mail, text, or phone to remind each other of meetings and other activ-ities? Carpool to meetings? Meet at the MCQ monthly meetings, sit together to visit and share? Meet for coffee or lunch to get to know each other? Participate in a retreat, class or workshop together? A quilt challenge? Get together for learning a technique or for feedback on color and design? Start a “small group” within MCQ to join with others with a quilting interest? Go to a quilt show together?

E-mail your quilt sister story to Zeeda Magnuson, [email protected]

The Quilt Sister Initiative is an opportunity for MCQ members to meet and get to know other members and learn about the Guild’s many learning and sharing experiences. So far, about forty members have signed up to participate.

Why are we doing this? New and veteran members have indicated strong interest in meeting and getting to know other quilters through MCQ. Mentoring and partnering with other members is a way to strengthen the entire group, as well as the individual members who participate. Have more fun, make new friends, get inspired to create!

Are you interested in becoming a quilt sister? Contact Zeeda or sign up at a meeting. The membership committee will pair you with another quilter.

THE QUILT SISTER INITIATIVE–2015 TELL YOUR QUILT SISTER STORY!

2016 CHALLENGE—CHANGING TIMES—BARB BONIFAS, KARRIE FLATER &

SALLY MORTENSON

The 2015 Challenge Inside Outside Upside Down is currently on exhibit at Blaine City Hall. In October it will move up the road to the Waite Park Library. Thanks to Caron Lage for transporting the exhibit to Waite Park and installing it. In November the Exhibit travels to the White Bear Lake Methodist Church. In December it will move south to Lakeville to the Lakeville Art Center.

It's time to start thinking about Changing Times, our 2016 Challenge. This theme has many possibilities—how

we have changed over time (remember cardboard templates for quilting, or garter belts?), from the crank telephone on the wall (our ring was 2 longs and 2 shorts) to the iPhone which only incidentally functions as a phone. What about change on a more global scale? The 2016 challenge forms will be available for download on our website by Oc-tober 1.

WHAT’S NEW AT MCQ?

Book Arts: Wow, we MCQ members are so lucky. At the last board meeting I witnessed a smart, creative, forward-thinking group of women working to keep Minnesota Con-temporary Quilters a strong, solvent, wonderful organization. One possibility in the works, down the road a bit, is a collabo-ration between Minnesota Contemporary Quilters and Min-nesota Center for Book Arts. If that idea piques your interest, you may wish to visit their website for fall classes:

http://www.mnbookarts.org/

Stash Busters Project: The MCQ small group 9/37 Sister-hood invites you to join a challenge making blocks for more quilts for Camp Wapo. The Bento Block quilts we made were a huge hit with the camp, and we decided to go for more. The inspiration for this set of quilts comes from this piece of Aboriginal art called My Country.

Our group will make these two designs as 12-½ inch unfin-ished blocks, using only two colors for each block and our own interpretations. We will work with the blocks to ar-range designs for each quilt. We challenge you to join us. We are collecting blocks in a basket at the membership table each meeting through November. We plan to have quilts fin-ished for the Spring 2016 retreat.
