4-H Annual Volunteer Training – Building 4-H Social Emotional Learning Skills and Dessert Potluck Wednesday November 13th 6:30-8:00 p.m. Norse Conference room, Mesabi Community College Virginia, MN Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults learn important life skills. There is increasing recognition that graduating from high school and being prepared for college and career requires a skill set that extends beyond traditional academics. Eight out of ten employers say SEL skills are the most important to success and yet also the hardest skills to find. The overwhelming majority of school administrators (96%), teachers (93%) and

parents (81%) believe that SEL is just as important as academic learning. You will leave this session with SEL tools and activities, as well as an action plan to imbed SEL skill-building into 4-H programming. This training is for all 4-H youth and adult volunteers in clubs and county-wide groups and programs, including committees, federations, leader’s councils and others. Each group should bring a team of youth (grades 6 and older) and adult volunteers to get the most out of the content. All clubs are expected to have at least one adult representative attend the training TO REGISTER: Contact North St. Louis County Extension at 218.749.7120 or email [email protected] by Mon. November 11th 2019. No cost to attend. Please bring a dessert to share!

Use the Cloverbud Information Sheet to Determine Age Appropriate Activities Youth are joining 4-H all across the state this fall. Youth who join that are in K-2nd grade should follow the guidelines and policies that are specific to this age group. The 4-H Cloverbud program supports the positive development of children as they explore their world, discover the possibilities and practice basic social skills. The 4-H Cloverbud information sheet for parents, guardians and mentors provides program/activity options, safety considerations, policies and rules. This resource provides the following:

• Planning age appropriate types of programming.

• Understanding cooperative versus competitive programming.

• Understanding the rules for Cloverbud participation across all types of programs.

• Ensuring safety measures are in place for all activities to keep all Cloverbuds safe when participating in programs and activities.

Using this info sheet will help you plan and deliver programs for Cloverbuds that are safe and age appropriate for all Kindergarten through 2nd grade 4-H participants.

Keep Youth Safe When Participating in 4-H Programs October is an exciting time for 4-H members, parents and Minnesota 4-H volunteers as clubs begin a new 4-H year. It is also an important time of year to plan for risk and keeping youth safe as they participate in a variety of programs, activities and events.

The University of Minnesota has put the Safety of Minors Policy in place, and it applies to all 4-H programs. As part of the policy, each 4-H club, group and activity must have a minimum of two active Minnesota 4-H volunteers designated as leaders. Also, all youth must be enrolled 4-H members before attending a meeting or event.

Refer to the user guides for club leaders and project leaders to verify volunteer and youth enrollment before meetings and activities start up. When volunteers and youth are enrolled they are covered by accident and liability insurance.

The keeping youth safe site has materials and tools to use when planning 4-H programs throughout the year.

• To help assess risk before programs occur, complete the risk management program planning tool.

• Become familiar with the overall policies and practices covering topics such as supervision, scheduling, emergency planning and procedures, facilities, room and sleeping arrangements, transportation, food safety and insurance.

• A series of information sheets provide more detailed information on topics including youth protection, responding to emergencies, animals, activities and outings and project specific information.

Using the planning tool and risk management materials helps to ensure safe and healthy environments for youth and adults participating in 4-H programs and activities. Thanks for making Minnesota 4-H a place where all young people are safe!
