Pray the Perpetual Novena in honor of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal every Monday immediately following the 12:05 p.m. Mass.

Eucharistic Adoration the first Saturday of each month 8:30 - 9:00 a.m. and the first Monday of every month at 7:00 p.m.

Eucharistic Adoration Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Notre Dame of Mt. Carmel, Cedar Knolls.

irst Reading: Acts 8:5-8,14-17

This first reading is one of several New Testament passages that suggest that Samaria was one of the first places where preachers about Jesus from Jerusalem met with success. The action of the Holy Spirit was seen as evidence of divine blessing and guidance of these early missionary efforts.

econd Reading: 1 Peter 3:15-18

This portion of the First Letter of Peter repeats a theme we have encountered in previous weeks—suffering for faith in Jesus is not only an imitation of Jesus himself, it is also a way to God.

ospel: John 14:15-21

In this selection from the Last Supper discourse in the Gospel of John, Jesus promises to send a “Paraclete” to his followers. This Greek word is a legal term which means something like a “defense counsel,” an advocate who will stand by the side of one accused. Even though Jesus is returning to the Father, the Spirit will guide his followers in truth and love.

We invite you to prayerfully reflect on the Readings for the week of May 21

Monday Acts 16:11-15; Ps 149:1b-2, 3-4, 5-6a and 9b; Jn 15:26—16:4a Tuesday Acts 16:22-34; Ps 138:1-2ab, 2cde-3, 7c-8; Jn 16:5-11 Wednesday Acts 17:15, 22—18:1; Ps 148:1-2, 11-12, 13, 14; Jn 16:12-15 Thursday The Ascension of the Lord Acts 1:1-11; Ps 47:2-3, 6-7, 8-9; Eph 1:17-23; Mt 28:16-20 Friday Acts 18:9-18; Ps 47:2-3, 4-5, 6-7; Jn 16:20-23 Saturday Acts 18:23-28; Ps 47:2-3, 8-9, 10; Jn 16:23b-28 Sunday Seventh Sunday of Easter Acts 1:12-14; Ps 27:1, 4, 7-8; 1 Pt 4:13-16; Jn 17:1-11a;

GOOD SAMARITANS OFFER

NEW TELEPHONE VISITATION MINISTRY

Do you know someone who is disabled or a shut-in? Our Good Samaritan Ministry is adding an additional service to our menu: telephone visitation for anyone who is a shut-in or who just needs a friendly “Hello” on a regular basis. We all need to know someone cares about us, and a silent phone can be almost deafening when you are lonely. If you or someone you know would like a call from Terri, our volunteer Telephone Visitor, please call the Good Samaritan Coordinator of the month (in May it is Jeanette Fredericks, 973-216-2231, with the name and telephone number of the Assumption parishioner to be called. The Coordinator will pass the information to Terri, and conversation between the two will begin on a regular basis for as long as the individual finds it beneficial. As always with the Good Samaritans Ministry, all information is confidential.

And of course our usual ministry is still operating for those who need help. This ministry can assist parishioners with shopping, banking, doctor and dentist appointments, and other errands. Our coordinator for May is Jeanette Fredericks at (973) 216-2231.

Assumption Parish Morristown, NJ

OUR ADVOCATE

" The Father] will give you another Advocate to be with you always . . . he remains with you and will be in you.

[. . .] Whoever has my commandments and observes them is the one who loves me." (John 14: 15-21)

The Risen Lord promises that the Father will send the Holy Spirit to be our Advocate. Here is a reflection I hope you will enjoy.

An extraordinary day: the family has gathered at the hospital to welcome its newest member. The proud, bleary-eyed mom and dad are cradling their hours-old daughter, Claire Cecelia. The aunt, the new mother's godmother, beams with delight to meet her new niece. The baby's little rosebud of a mouth reminds her of her own daughter's birth 12 years before.

Later that day she brings her elderly mother to the hospital so she can see her first great-grandchild, who shares her name Cecelia. The great-grandmother kisses the newborn's forehead with gentle commitment.

It's also Great-Grandma's birthday. So the entire clan gathers that evening at the aunt's house. A nephew arrives, wearing the neck brace he's had on for two month's now, since the car accident. Someone crossed the center line and hit them. His wife was badly injured and is still recovering; her father was killed. But he's here, back from the brink. A walking miracle.

A family friend rings the doorbell. She started chemo the day before for lung cancer. Hard times lie ahead - but tonight, she's here to party.

Candles are lit, cake is served, gifts are given, memories are shared. And of course, everyone talks about the baby. It's an extraordinarily beautiful day in the life of this family. The aunt-godmother and host of the party, Catherine O'Connell-Cahill, writes about it in At Home With Our Faith [March 2008]:

"Every now and then - maybe a handful of times over the course of a lifetime, maybe more if you are lucky - you have a day like this yourself. The bones of life poke through the fluff that otherwise preoccupies you year in, year out. You hold someone's hand as they approach death. You pick up a newborn babe. You fall in love. You are truly forgiven. Someone you love is saved from death. You marvel at the goodness of God. Claire Cecelia's first day of life was such a day. Maybe poet William Blake put it best:

“And we are put on earth a little space / That we may learn to bear the beams of love."

In the simplest, everyday celebrations and expressions of love, God is present. The "Advocate" that Jesus promises is the Spirit of God that opens our hearts and spirits in gratitude for days like the day this family experiences and that we all experience, even if not as often as we'd like. God is in our midst in the love of a spouse holding the hand of his or her dying spouse, in the love of a new mom feeding her baby, in the love of two friends walking the beach. In the joy of the Easter season, may the Advocate enable us to "bear the beams of love" and mirror that love in our compassion and care for one another. (Connections)

In Christ’s Peace, Father John

Assumption Parish Morristown, NJ

THE GOD WITHIN US

Today’s Gospel is taken from the Farewell Discourse of Jesus which the Fourth Gospel presents at the conclusion of the Last Supper. Jesus’ powerful words assure us that we share in the very life of God.

Adults: What simple steps can I take to remind myself that God is always with me and that I can always trust in God’s guidance and love?

Children: Do I realize that God knows me better than anyone else and is always here to help me?

A Family Perspective: The mystery of the Trinity can be difficult for us to grasp. Today's Gospel invites us to consider how the three persons—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit— work together so that God's salvation is made known to us. Jesus' mission is continued through the activity of the Holy Spirit in the lives of his disciples. We have received this same Spirit through our Baptisms. The Spirit, living and working within us, reveals the mystery of God's love for us. Just as the first disciples were not left orphaned, we are not orphaned; we remain in God's embrace through the gift of the Holy Spirit. Gather your family and invite each family member to say what he or she knows about the Holy Spirit. Read aloud today's Gospel, John 14:15-21. What does Jesus say the Holy Spirit will do for the disciples? Through the gift of the Holy Spirit, we come to share in the love of God made known to us in Jesus. Pray together, thanking God for this gift of the Holy Spirit.

Assumption Parish Morristown, NJ

Farewell to Father Przemek

Join us on Sunday June 25th Join us at 12:15 Mass (reception following in the School Gym) to

wish Father Przemek a fond farewell as he answer God’s call to study at Catholic University. For

the last four years Fr. Przemek has been an important part of our Parish family. He has always

been there for us, sharing his time, his laughter, and his prayers! But most importantly, he has

shared his love of God, of his Son Jesus, of the Holy Spirit, and

the Blessed Mother. He has been an example to us on how to live

a life fully and joyfully in the Catholic faith.

We will miss him, but we know that God has a plan for him.

And watching him accept God’s will helps us to be courageous

about our own future. We thank God for sending Fr. Przemek to

Assumption, and we thank Fr. Przemek for being the amazing

person he is! We ask Fr. Przemek to keep us in his prayers, as we

will keep him in ours.

Please R.S.V.P. if you are planning to attend the reception for

Fr. Przemek at www.assumptionparish.org or call the Parish

Office at 973-539-2141.
