Introduction (cont'd.)

Front Range are veins and replacement deposits inPaleozoic limestone and in Precambrian schist . Manysmall stocks of intrusive rock of Tertiary age areassociated with the copper -lead-zinc-gold - silver de-posits. A few of the Front Range deposits are ofPrecambrian age, but most deposits are Tertiary orare associated with the deformation of the Laramiderevolution .

In the San Juan region copper - bearing depositsrange from fissure veins to bedding replacementsand pyrometasomatic deposits in Paleozoic and itleso-zoic sedimentary rocks . In most deposits copper issubordinate to gold, silver , lead, or zinc. The min-eralization is related to numerous Tertiary stocks .

1 A large number of copper deposits have beenfound in central and northern California in metamor-phosed eugeosynclinal rocks along the western borderof the granitic intrusives collectively called the SierraNevada batholith , and along smaller batholiths to the

i northwest . All of the larger deposits , except for theWalker mine and the Engels mine, are lenticularbodies of copper-zinc - bearing massive pyrite withminor gold and silver in chloritic or sericitic rocks .They lie near major zones of dislocation in themetamorphosed volcanic and sedimentary rocks alongthe northern part . of the Sierra Nevada batholith, butthe deposits are not on the main faults , and none is inthe granitic rock . The ores are probably of LateJurassic or Early Cretaceous age .

iNumerous but minor copper deposits have been

' found in or near the widespread granitic rocks insouthern California .
