DESIGN BRIEF
COMMERCIAL PROJECT | PAST TO PRESENT: ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE | 1.1
Singapore has the reputation of one of the top global
city to live, work, and play. Not only well-known for its
trading and economic growth, Singapore is also known
to be a World Art Hub. Singapore's increasing arts
attendance and its aim to be the Arts Center must lead
to the increasing of creative platforms for visual artists
to work. Singapore Art Stage, which is the largest
contemporary art fair in Southeast Asia, is able to
attract over 35 thousands visitors around the world. The building, where the artist
residency will be located is 99
Beach Road. It is situated near
Bugis MRT which is in the
heart of Singapore. This area
was historically designated a
part of the European Town.
Artist-in-Residence program gives relevant solution to the needs of art plat-
forms corresponding to the increasing arts sector in Singapore. With the
intention of designing artist residencies, it needs to show exible space
design that can be utilized by ne arts artists focusing on two-dimensional
arts especially painters, but also accepting printmakers and photographers.
This artist residency is open to any local and international artists to collabo-
rate together in Singapore, however, they need to send their curriculum vitae
to show their motivation and experience. Both local and international artists
may apply to stay in this residence. Residents must pay the fee themselves
for their own stay or they could nd funding or support from their own coun-
tries/networks. The program will run in 3, 6, or 12-month grants and the
works will be exhibited upon completion of the program on in-site gallery.

FOCUS AREA 1: RECEPTION & GALLERY
This concept is clearly shown in the reception and galery with
all ‘industrial’ colors of raw materials of grey and brown.
Adding the value of this heritage building, the concept is
emphasized by using concrete as its main materials. Industrial
style can be an unnished look and focuses on combining
raw and pretty rough surfaces with clean, at surfaces.There-
fore in contrast to concrete, the reception area will be using
white ceramic with gloss nish. Raw materials such as brick-
work and clean nish material such as glass will be used as
well inside the reception.

In a temporary exhibition, the display
should consider the exibility in show-
casing the artworks. This residency is
only displaying two-dimensional arts
artists In this gallery, there are dierent
types of exhibitions: using steel track
with hanger, pivot walls, sliding exhibi-
tion, and display rack. These all dierent
types of exhitions are to support the
functions of artist residency as they are
only staying for a couple of weeks.
Color of red and orange is added to give
warm atmosphere and inviting environ-
ment. The gallery will be as well in neu-
tral color without any distracting color
to make the artworks stand out, there-
fore monochromatic colors will be
appropriate for this area.

Restaurant is one additional facility that this Artist-in-Residence
provides. It is called as ‘The Loft’ because it represents the concept
of this artist residency and it is to show public how the lofty concept
is applied inside the residence. This 249-sqm restaurant provides
breakfast for residents; however, because of small numbers of
guests, breakfast facility is not those buffet types, the residents will
order the food provided on the lists every morning. It is situated
around public circulation that alows the visitors to enter and locate it
easily. This restaurant is open to public because the building is locat-
ed at CBD area and very easily accessed

FOCUS AREA 3: GUEST ROOMS (RESIDENTIAL LOFT)
Residential rooms will be divided into two types: standard (around 33 sqm) and deluxe (44 sqm). In standard room, they are provided 24-27 sqm of working area, while deluxe room provides more working area which is around 36 sqm. Standard room will be suitable for one person, while deluxe room can t two persons. Loft con-cept is applied in a way that sleeping and work-ing space area separated; sleeping area is on upper level while working space, kitchen, and bathroom are on lower level. Understanding that two-dimensional arts artists would work with spray and other tools that are sometimes poisonous, appropriate ventilation system must be applied in the residence to help reducing toxi-cal materials to spread out. Both natural and articial ventilation are very important inside the residence.
Residence bedroom corridor is designed in such a way to create huge contrast to those clean white design of living space, however still with the same concept and approach of industrial style. Understanding that colors are the most essential aspect and are inseparable from every artist, the corridor is intergrating many colors to create dynamic design and artistic view.

DISORGANIZEDA S Y M M E T R I C A L The concept for the design of the Arts & Design Center
Singapore is based on Geometric Abstraction. Geometric abstraction is a form of abstract art based on the use of geo-metric forms, placed in non-illusionistic space and combined into non-objectivecompositions. The idea of our design is to create something bold out of a building which is very symmet-rical and planned. Since the outside of the building cannot be redeveloped we decided to create something that is not sym-metrical and planned inside. When entering the building there will be a focus on geometric abstraction.
This Arts & Design Center is located at 39 Armenian Street. This is an old old heritage building and gazetted by URA; it is known as the Old Tao Nan Building.
DESIGN CONCEPT
PROJECT SITEThe head of one of the famous design colleges
named Art & Design Centre in America is interest-
ed in opening a new branch of academy in Singa-
pore. Art and Design Center Singapore is replacing
the old Peranakan Museum. This school requires
to have spaces that could accomodate 200-300
students. In addition, this academy oers a wide
range of diploma and bachelor programmes
focusing in art and design.

FOCUS AREA 1: LIBRARY
The overall concept of this school is geometrical abstration. This concept is too strong and distracting because of bold colors and uncertain lines, especially for study and quiet area. Therefore, taking more consideration, this concept is adapted and developed by using soft colors with striking band of colors, but still is not losing the original essence of the geometric abstraction mood. Soft, muted colors in a cool palette are generally best for areas where quiet study is the aim. Libraries where emphasis is on study rather than interaction is good for having soft whites mixed with sage green or pale sky blue. Every color of the rainbow has its own deep-rooted psychological meaning. The design of having uncertain lines in every colors of rainbow represents human brain that is unpredictable and generates more ideas and thoughts of the users. In the end, this library will be using every rainbow color in black background to make it more stand out.

FOCUS AREA 2: DRAWING ROOM
The original concept of Arts and Design Centre Singa-
pore is geometrical abstraction. To apply this concept
to a classroom, there needs some considerations
about colors. is to use a bright energetic color on one
wall, behind the teacher, and a neutral or quiet color on
the other three walls. Student will be stimulated as
they look toward the instructor, but the restful color
on other walls will reduce eyestrain and promote
study. Ceiling design will be more intergrated to geo-
metric abstraction as it is not too visible for a space. In
general, response to color on the warm side of the
scale (reds, oranges, and yellows) tends to be more
stimulating. The power of warm colors in the class-
room brings excitement to students and increases
their brain activity. These colors are good for drawing
class as it makes students pay more attention to
specic pieces of work; however it is not adviseable to
get students to settle down and work quietly or read.
Yellow is the most appropiate color to be used in a
drawing classroom. It is the most visible color and is
the rst color the human eye notices and an important
feature of yellow color is to enhance brain activity.

Mr. Daniel is a nice client that is going to indus-
trial direction. He and His Wife are a very
lovely and young couple and love to explore
colours, however they still want to have
‘nature’ atmosphere inside their newly bought
house. Therefore, the proposed design is
fullling their needs and representing their
bright, lively and fun personalityDESIGNIt is important to know what the direction of a style that
the client wants. Every design will always be unique
following every individuals’ taste. The design of this
house is industrial with modern feel. The rooms will
mostly use white combined with wood. Orange color
also will be applied to complement the design.

Bird-Nest 3.1Lighting Design
MISCELLANEOUS | BIRD-NEST: LIGHTING DESIGN | 3.1
The inspiration of this light xture is from
bird nest. My partner, Vini Kurniawan, and I
decided to develop this inspiration into
applicable concept. Our light xture
consists of three layers functioning to
create dierent lighting eects.
The rst layers is to construct the initial frame of the lamp which is supporting the
light bulb and connect the upper and bottom circular frames. The second and third
layer is functioning to diuse the brightness and intensity of light. We are using
warm-light bulb instead of daylight because of bird nest concept which is considered
as warm place for baby bird to stay.
DESIGN CONCEPT
Inspiration Design Conceptualization
DESIGN PROCESSFor this lighting project,
we are asked to design a
llighting xture from
white acrylic paper only.
There will be no glue or
other adhesive element,
which means that there
will be only clipping
method from one acrylic
paper to another.
1. First layer is made to hold the frame
and support the light bulb.
2. Second layer is to diuse the light
and spread the lumination properly.
3. Third layer with thinner acrylic
paper is also to diuse the light.
MISCELLANEOUS | BIRD-NEST: LIGHTING DESIGN | 3.1
Lighting eect create by two layers Lighting eect create by three layers
Light xture creates ower pattern shadow
My partner and I named this light xture as “Bird-Nest Lamp” which actually is the
inspiration of this project. By putting the third layer, this lighting xture looks more
advanced and sophisticated. The same sizes and proportions of its layer managed
to have an organized shadow. It creates shadow pattern like ower on the surface.
This light xture is not only used for functional reason, but also for aesthetic and
decorative element in any interior space.
