WORKSHOPS ON OFFER INCLUDE:Session 1a) (Repeated Session 2a)What are you doing with your Year 10s?: Some ideas for preparing students for the new QCAA syllabi Kerri Hill, HOD Townsville Grammar School (QLD)

I will discuss some ideas related to preparing the Year 10 cohort for the new QCAA syllabi, including a PSMT recently completed by the students in our Year 10 cohort who will eventually go on to study Mathematical Methods. It involves using Graph Mode on the graphics calculator and their knowledge of linear and quadratic functions. I will provide some feedback on how the students did on this task, and how we used the 'new' PSMT marking scheme to assess this task.

Session 1b)Scepticism, false positives and the power of Statistics - a context-based introduction to the binomial distribution Alastair Lupton, HOD Le Fevre High School (SA)

In this workshop, a context-based approach will be taken to the introduction of the binomial distribution and its power as a tool for modelling dichotomous scenarios. Through a couple of engaging contexts, we will travel from probability and counting, via tree diagrams, to the binomial distribution in all its glory, along with associated computations and graphical representations. WORKSHOPS ON OFFER - CONTINUED...Session 1c)The Casio fx-CG50AU: The prequel…Elena Zema, Mathematics Teacher Casio Education

Learn the basic introductory skills to operate the Casio fx-CG50AU. Free and useful resources will be available, that will convert you from beginner into a fluent fx-CG50AUer in no time! This workshop is for first time users or if you just need to freshen up those ski lls. Bring your own fx-CG50AU or use a loan machine.

Session 2b)Making and using models - from real dataAnthony Harradine, Director Potts Baker Institute (SA)

We will work with two contexts: i) managing gas wells and ii) dampening the motion of a spring (aka - shock absorbers) You will use real data from these engaging contexts to develop a model and use the model to answer questions. In case i) the data is supplied where as in case ii) the data will have to be 'got', using a data logger.

Session 2c)Developing mathematical thinking through problem solvingDr Amie Albrecht, Senior Lecturer, Mathematics University of South Australia

Working mathematically is about more than knowing facts, recalling definitions and applying techniques to familiar problems. In this workshop, we’ll talk about developing mathematical thinking by focusing on mathematical processes, such as strategies for getting started; attacking the problem (e.g., specialising and generalising, being systematic, forming and justifying conjectures); and reflecting on and extending our work. The aim is to develop students’ skills so that they can tackle unfamiliar problems with confidence, help them experience the joy in asking and answering their own questions, and orient them towards the creative ways in which professional mathematicians work.

In this session we’ll sample some good problems for uncovering aspects of problem-solving, and talk about specific strategies for progressively developing oral presentation and mathematical writing skills. My goal is that you’ll find one or two specific ideas that will help in your current teaching.

Session 3Forum: Issues and opportunities in 2018 and 2019

The new courses are upon us. They will bring with them a mixture of fear and excitement, issues and opportunities. During this session you will have the opportunity to talk to colleagues about your challenges, what you are excited about and more. There will be a time of sharing where we hope that opportunities to help each other may become apparent.

REGISTER ONLINE TO SECURE YOUR ATTENDANCE Registrations close on Friday 27th of July, unless allocations exhausted. Limited spots available so please register early to avoid disappointment.
