ZOO

nyone who has ever owned a dog will understand the old mantra, “Man’s best

friend.” But have they ever spent every day risking their life alongside their canine chum, just to save the lives of other people around them? If not, they should probably listen to what Dave Heyhoe has to say about his furry friend, Treo, before uttering those words again.

Back in 2008, Dave and Treo were out in Afghanistan. Treo was an arms explosive search dog, and Dave was his handler. They sought out Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) that wound or kill British troops. And they were so good, even

the Taliban knew of their work. “They wanted to kill or maim

us,” proud Mancunian Dave, now 43, tells ZOO. “They didn’t want this dog team going out and finding what they’d taken time to put in the ground!”

Fronting upTreo – a black Labrador-spaniel cross – was first handed to the Army by a family who couldn’t handle him. With Dave, though, it was instantly a good fit.

“It was love at first sight! If I hadn’t joined the Army, I would probably have ended up in prison. Treo was the same; when I met him, he was like an 18-year-old tearaway of the doggy world! You could see that when he was ripping the heads

off chickens in Afghanistan!” By the time they got out to

the front line, they had become a seriously useful team, which is just as well. “A lot of the time, Treo and I were right at the front of the patrols, because we needed his nose to make sure there were no IEDs there to kill our guys.

“I would know we were on the verge of finding something because Treo’s temperament would totally change. He would suck harder on the ground and his body would go rigid, as he entered what we call the ‘scent picture’.”

Being at the front of a patrol

is one of the most dangerous jobs in Afghanistan, and sadly several dogs and their handlers Dave knew have been killed in action. As there are never more than a few metres between the animal and his master, both are constantly at risk.

“Yes, I was scared,” admits Dave. “But I used that fear to

make sure neither of us became sloppy. Even so,

every time we went out on patrol, I’d still be

thinking, ‘Is this going be the last

one with my best mate?’ Because Treo was my best mate.”

Daisy chain discoveryWorking with the Royal Irish Guards in Sangin, Dave and Treo soon racked up a series of crucial, life-saving finds, the pick of the bunch being the discovery of a daisy chain – five IEDs linked together.

“It was what we call a collapsing circuit,” explains Dave. “If someone was to clip one wire, the others would go up around him. That would have killed an entire patrol. I remember an American officer looked round and said, ‘Sh*t man, the dog just found a collapsing circuit!’ When you think about the damage that one device could have done,

plus all the others we found, I honestly think we’ve saved hundreds of lives.”

Unfortunately, being good at this job is guaranteed to irritate one group of people: the Taliban. And thanks to the interpreters assigned to British troops, Dave learned Treo had become a Taliban target.

“We were getting orders for an operation and they kept talking about this person they were going to use as bait. It wasn’t until the end they asked, ‘Are you OK with that, Dog?’ – which is what everyone called me! For the past two weeks they’d heard enemy chatter saying, ‘The black dog’s out!’ because we were so successful.”

It meant they could flush out

enemy positions using Dave and Treo as a decoy, which Dave was totally at ease with. “Bring it on! If the Taliban thought we were a threat, it meant we were doing our job.”

Going big timeIt’s no real surprise Treo picked up a variety of awards when he returned home. But the big one was the Dickens Medal – the animal equivalent of the Victoria Cross. Only 63 have been awarded since its creation in World War I. So, it was for both of them, right?

“No it’s for animal gallantry,” says Dave. “Treo got the Dickens and I got nothing! But my reward was retirement and to have my best mate at home.

That’s all I could have asked for. I don’t need a shiny medal!”

With Treo now enjoying a well-earned retirement, has the celebrity status gone to his head, or is he still a hard case? “In the Army, Treo bit quite a few people because he was a little grumpy,” says Dave. “But since he got the award, he’s gone all big-time!

“He gets hugs and kisses and rolls around on his back. You see him thinking, ‘Yeah baby!’ All I’m thinking is, ‘What happened to the Army dog?’”

J ASON, HOW WAS IT ON THE SET WITH ALL THESE AGEING

ACTION HEROES?A lot of fun. Everyone was messing around and making wallies of themselves. You need a bit of light relief from all the punching and shooting!SO YOU DIDN’T GET STARSTRUCK?Well, they’re just a bunch of normal chaps – but just a little bit bigger than the average guy! They like fooling around, so they are no different from friends who I’ve got. Although they are slightly more recognisable. YOU CAN SAY THAT AGAIN…My very first day on set was with Arnold, when we pull a bag off his head and there he is. At

that point, I felt the scale had changed from the first movie, because there was Arnie! WERE THERE ANY BIG WEIGHTLIFTING COMPETITIONS?Have you seen the size of that guy Terry Crews? You can’t lift more than him. His arms are 25 inches wide! With those chaps and Sly around, you can forget the weights contests!SO YOU WEREN’T ALL PUSHING EACH OTHER IN THE GYM?No, everyone does their own thing. Although I will say Scott Adkins is probably one of the greatest on-screen fighters there is. He had a bad knee injury when we had our fight scene and was due to go for an operation, but he did the fight anyway. He’s amazing!

WHAT ABOUT THE BODY COUNT? WERE YOU KEEPING SCORE OF WHO GETS THE MOST KILLS IN THE FILM?Ha! I’m sure I have second billing in terms of a body count. Actually, maybe third or fourth – further down than some of the other chaps, anyway!WAS THERE ANY ON-SET BRAINSTORMING ABOUT A THIRD EXPENDABLES MOVIE?Sly has an insatiable appetite for more, so I’m sure he’s thinking about the next one – and the one after that!WOULD YOU BE INTERESTED IN DOING A THIRD ONE?Yeah, of course.  Do I want

to sit on the sofa and not be a part of it? I’ve made movies that were a bit of a headache, but this is not that. This is a bunch of good guys getting together. We all love making action movies. That’s what we do.SO IT WOULD BE FAIR TO SAY YOU ENJOY YOUR DAY JOB, THEN?It beats what I used to do: selling perfume and jewellery on the street! That’s not really as glamorous as running around in a big blockbuster film with the likes of Stallone and Schwarzenegger, is it? There are a lot of perks. There are the negatives, too, but that’s life in general, right?AND WHAT ARE THOSE NEGATIVES?

I f**king hate the green screen acting [the CGI stuff they do in an empty room]! I’d pay significant amounts of money to never have to do it again. You can’t be yourself against a green screen – you cannot fake adrenalin!FINALLY, A NEW JAMES BOND MOVIE IS COMING UP. EVER THOUGHT ABOUT BEING 007?Sure. Who wouldn’t want to play James Bond? It’s the best role in the world, so I don’t think there’s a working actor who wouldn’t. I’m British, and he stands for something I grew up on. I’ve seen more Bond movies than anything else, so there has to be something in that…

Top fi tness expert Jamie Baird explains how NeuroSport and NeuroSonic will help you reach your peak in the gym and at work

Whether you’re about to hit the weights, are deep in training for an event, or have an important afternoon meeting, today’s results-driven world

demands that you are fi ring on all cylinders. We all know about the importance of nutrition in reaching our full potential but overlooking proper hydration will scupper your best intentions. Studies have shown that dehydration by as little as 2% of your body mass can signifi cantly undermine physical and cognitive performance*. That’s why the brains at NeuroDrinks have developed two drinks specifi cally designed to support your body when it needs it most.

Even if you’re not working out, your body can still suffer from dehydration – modern air-conditioning doesn’t care about your cellular balance. NeuroSonic is the perfect antidote to the 2pm mind-walk. It contains caffeine, taurine and Siberian Ginseng for an immediate pick-me-up, Acetyl-L-Carnitine for faster mental processing, and numerous B vitamins which are vital for neurological and cognitive function.

NeuroSport is a vital piece of ammo in your training armoury. Not only does it deliver the hydration your body craves, but it also contains a unique blend of 12 minerals and electrolytes, without which your mitochondria – the engine room of your cells – cannot function at their peak.

So don’t be undone by dehydration – keep a Neurodrink at hand if you want to perform at your best throughout the day.Find out more about the range at drinkneuro.co.uk

A NEW BALANCE

You work. You train. You relax. Those are the basic components of a successful man’s day-to-day. But they’re far from

easy to balance. A long day in the offi ce leaves no time for exercise; an evening of socialising means a late start tomorrow morning and by spending all your time in the gym the world outside passes you by. Each 24 hours presents a new challenge and keeping a healthy balance means making the right choices, all day long.

COMPROMISEOne choice, at least, has been made easier. A refreshing drink is a just reward after a hard day at the offi ce and giving your all at the gym. But the empty calories in beer can hamper your

physical gains and, if you have one too many, it leaves you less than 100% at work the next day. So if you want to look good and be at your very best, you have to cut out your social life, right? It’s the only way to stay on top.

Well, there is another option. Equator is a UK fi rst – a 0% alcohol, calories and sugar beer-style drink. We took a pair of twins and set them a challenge: to get in the best shape of their lives in just two months and enjoy themselves while they do so. Graham, in the red, will drink beer as normal. His brother Jon, in the blue, will drink Equator. Both will do the same gym routine with the same trainer and follow identical nutrition plans.

Only one will win. It’s all in the balance.

BROTHERS IN ARMSJon and Graham are busy men in very different ways. Jon, a project manager for an engineering fi rm, does a nine-to-fi ve and has a social life that will probably sound familiar: “I have a few drinks two or three times during the week, then enjoy a lively Friday and Saturday.” His brother Graham is a chef, so has the stress of unsociable hours to deal with, not to mention the drinking culture associated with the restaurant industry. “I take my job very seriousy but I like to relax with a few beers on my day off. I want Jon to do well... I just want to do better.”

MH is challenging a pair of twins to get into great shape in eight weeks. We want to find out whether new beer-style drink Equator could be the key to a fit body and a healthy social life

JONATHAN BRADBURY, 29“I really want to fi nd out how to fi t the gym around my work and social life and whether cutting out alcohol will help me stick to my workouts.”

GRAHAM BRADBURY, 29“This is a lifestyle change for me. I want my results to last longer than eight weeks. I’ll still have a few drinks but I want to lose my belly, too.”

EVI ROOTS IS A GREAT BEAR OF A MAN. All dreadlocks and hangover at 10:30 on a Monday morning he’s still glowing from last night’s performance at the Brixton Academy in front of 5,000 people. “They introduced me and the crowd went wild,” he says, smiling at the memory. “It was electric. It’s just nice to know I’m still appreciated.”

More than that, Roots’ career is experiencing its third or fourth shot in the arm thanks to his appearance on Dragons’ Den. But this time Levi Roots, Mobo Music Awards Best Reggae Performer Nominee in 1998, founder of the highly influential roots group Matic16 (named after the M16 - this was Brixton in the 1980s after all), was coming back as an entrepreneur.

“I was headhunted,” he laughs when I ask him how on earth he ended up on Dragons’ Den. He’d gone along to a real food market in London to try and drum up some business for his Reggae Reggae Sauce – a spicy barbecue

REGGAE STEADY COOK

Levi Roots shot to fame when he wowed the Dragons’ Den audience with his Reggae Reggae Sauce song. But, as he tells Hugo Greenhalgh, it’s not his first brush with fame in a life that has already encompassed James Brown, Nelson Mandela and one very tasty sauce

IF YOU CAN’T WRITE A POP SONG

IN 10 MINUTES IT’S NOT A GOOD POP

SONG

Greg wears suit and shirt by Susannah Hall; shoes by Carré Ducker

The New Romantics were a fleeting but influential group of bands that revitalised music and fashion in the face of the dour days of punk.

Hugo Greenhalgh catches up with one of the key figures of the age now head of a multi-

million pound tech company...

t’s a hoary old question, but at times it does pay off to ask, “Whatever happens to old pop stars once they fade from sight and glory?” Not the old troupers, the Elton Johns or Rolling Stones still touring, or the middle-aged pretenders Boy George (of whom more later) and George Michael buoyed by regular scandals and sporadic work, but those whose success was fleeting but significant.

Perhaps a qualification should be made before I reveal the name of the band: if you are aged under 30 stop reading now for you will have no idea of the brief butterfly glory that was the post-punk, avant-garde band Haysi Fantayzee.

Made up of Paul Caplin, Kate Garner and Jeremy Healy the band held the music world in thrall during the glorious/appalling* years in the early 1980s when the Blitz Kids held court. “Our contemporaries were Spandau Ballet and Steve Strange,” laughs Caplin when we meet for lunch in London. “It was all rather pompous stuff.”

I’d bumped into Caplin a few weeks earlier at a country house spa deep in the Cotswolds. We’d met over late-night drinks, both coming to the conclusion that the spa was appalling. I’d asked what line of work Caplin was in. “I run a tech firm,” he’d answered. So far so normal: Caplin Systems has developed a real-time web facility that has been developed to provide many asset managers with real-time online trading facilities. But as the whiskey flowed Caplin’s past as one of the key figures in the New Romantic movement had come spilling out, sequins, rouge, Marilyn and all.

With a background in mathematics and a high profile in today’s IT world, Caplin is perhaps not your archetypal ex-pop star. But back in 1979 he dropped out of a Maths PhD at Cambridge to play keyboards in a band called Animal Magnet.

They had one major hit: Welcome to the Monkey House, a rather good piece of electro synth with a chorus that goes: “I’m going to be rich tonight. I’m going to be huge. I’d like to be rich tonight. I’m going to be na-na-na-na, etc...”

“It was very trendy at the time,” claims Caplin. “These were the very early days of the New Romantic movement,
