• Missionaries converted many local daimyo to Christianity

• Japan’s ruler believed European Missionaries looked down on traditional Japanese culture & religion (Shintoism & Buddhism) & eventually missionaries are banned & Christians are persecuted

• First contact by Portuguese in 1543

• Japanese were eager to trade with Portuguese who brought clocks, eyeglasses, tobacco, & firearms (muskets & cannons)
