Mossuril Film Festival,Mossuril. 01/08/2014

A new annual film event in Nampula Province, the Mossuril Film Festival (MFF), opens its doors to the public on Thursday August 7th with an inauguration ceremony and the screening of Brazilian film Wolf at the Door in the district's only cinema.

The festival, sponsored by the national film institute, Vodacom and other national and international sponsors, hopes the four days of cinema in World Heritage-listed Ilha de Mocambique and adjacent Mossuril Bay will contribute to building a film culture and strengthen tourism in the region.

The project was part crowd-funded on online platform Indiegogo by more than 35 individuals in eight countries.

"A festival can help lift a district, I have seen it in Brazil," said national film institute (INAC) director Djalma Lourenco on a visit to the festival's headquarters on July 22, where the head of Mozambique's audiovisual sector offered his organisation's formal support to the festival.

Director Lourenco will be a guest honour of at the opening ceremony and INAC donated a technical kit to the festival.MFF was founded by German NGO Breaking the Ice and

Mossuril-based organisation Teran Foundation and has so far restored an abandoned building as a head office and cultural centre in the coastal district of Mossuril, opposite Ilha de Mocambique, as well as offering marketing, design and administration training to six local secondary students.

"We hope to develop the space into a media lab after the festival to offer basic audiovisual training to local students," says Lisa St Aubin de Teran, founder of Teran Foundation and a British novelist living in Mossuril. Alex Macbeth, a media consultant and this year's festival director - as well as Teran's son - says the idea would be for the media lab to become sustainable by producing short clips for local businesses and NGOs. Torsten Sewing, Director of Breaking the Ice, sees this year's festival as a launch platform for media to contribute to economic development in the region.

The festival will be split over four days and two districts, with 14 films set to screen in all. The venues on Ilha are the Old Fort and Ruby Guesthouse while in more rural Mossuril, films will be shown in a former cinema as well as open-air in the district's main square. The programme, sponsored by Festival do Rio, INAC and Susan Wrubel - a US producer - presents an eclectic mix of Brazilian, Mozambican and British films. Brazilian film Wolf at the Door, directed by Renato Terra, will open the festival.

Ken Loach's The Wind that Shakes the Barley, Mozambican film Last Flight of the Flamingo and a plethora of other Brazilian and domestic films are also programmed to screen at the festival. Besides screening films, the festival will host exhibitions and art workshops for children.

Vodacom's mobile stage is set to be the centrepiece of the opening and closing night party on August 7th and August 10th in Mossuril.
