I wish I could say that the words I have allowed to come out of my mouth were always kind words, and words that were uplifting, but they were not. Still that does not excuse my behavior and the results or pain and hurt they caused. Yes, I have had to ask for forgiveness, yet once the words are spoken, the pain and hurt cannot be changed. Most often our words are a result of an attempt to get our way or persuade others to our point of view. James ends the passage with the words, “Show by your good life that your works are done with gentleness born of wisdom.” Actions may speak louder than words, but words are a window into the soul. What do your words reveal about the spirit within you? That devotion ended with a “Thought for the day.” “Today I will show God’s love by speaking words of encouragement.” Lord, forgive me for the things I have said, grant me the wisdom and strength to think before I speak, and to speak words that would reveal to others the love of Christ. Amen.

Pastor's Corner ~ Rev. Eric Lane

Greetings in the name of Jesus Christ our risen Savior.

“Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me.” Remember this little

rhyme as a child. Well the truth is that words do hurt. They destroy relationships and build walls

between people and sadly the words we choose are powerful.

The other day I was reading the devotion in the “Upper Room” and the focus passage of

scripture was James3:3-13 (NRSV). I wonder what was happening in the church when these

words were written.

“If we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we guide their whole bodies. Or

look at ships: though they are so large that it takes strong winds to drive them, yet they are

guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs. So also, the tongue is a

small member, yet it boasts of great exploits.

How great a forest is set ablaze by a small fire! And the tongue is a fire. The tongue is placed

among our members as a world of iniquity; it stains the whole body, sets on fire the cycle of

nature, and is itself set on fire by hell. For every species of beast and bird, of reptile and sea

creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by the human species, but no one can tame the

tongue—a restless evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless the Lord and Father, and with it

we curse those who are made in the likeness of God. From the same mouth come blessing and

cursing. My brothers and sisters, this ought not to be so. Does a spring pour forth from the same

opening both fresh and brackish water? Can a fig tree, my brothers and sisters, yield olives, or a

grapevine fig? No more can salt water yield fresh.

Who is wise and understanding among you? Show by your good life that your works are done

with gentleness born of wisdom.”

We at times pass off the things we do and say as being human, as if we have no control over our

actions. But yet we do have control over our actions and as Christians we even have a power

greater than those in the world. That is the power of the Advocate or Holy Spirit, which Jesus

describes as the Spirit of truth that abides in us, the Spirit of self-control.

Another saying that I remember from one of my teachers. When I became angry she would tell

me to stop, separate myself from the situation, find a place to breathe and to count to ten before I

reacted.

I wish I could say that I have always reacted like that, but I haven’t. I wish I could say that the

words I have allowed to come out of my mouth were always kind words, and words that were

uplifting, but they were not.

Still that does not excuse my behavior and the results or pain and hurt they caused. Yes, I have

had to ask for forgiveness, yet once the words are spoken, the pain and hurt cannot be changed.

Most often our words are a result of an attempt to get our way or persuade others to our point of

view. James ends the passage with the words, “Show by your good life that your works are done

with gentleness born of wisdom.”

Actions may speak louder than words, but words are a window into the soul. What do your

words reveal about the spirit within you?

That devotion ended with a “Thought for the day.” “Today I will show God’s love by speaking

words of encouragement.”

Lord, forgive me for the things I have said, grant me the wisdom and strength to think before I

speak, and to speak words that would reveal to others the love of Christ. Amen.

Our September Salad Supper was a huge success with 17

members and 10 guests present. After a delicious dinner

of salads and desserts, guest speaker Barbara Funderburk

kept the attention of all present with her with and sense of

humor in presenting her program entitled “God’s

Pharmacy”. Barbara began by saying life began in the

garden and then continued using fruit, vegetables and nuts

as examples as to how these resemble organs of the body.

Tomatoes (when cut in half, resembles the 4 chambers of

the heart); carrots (an excellent source of carotene good

for the eyes); grapes (lungs, when cut resemble air ducts);

celery (salt that the body needs); kidney bean (shaped like

the kidneys); and sweet potato (shaped like the pancreas).

Also, a big thank you to Joyce Fowler and Jodie Fowler-

Lemmonds for the decorations and favors.

Please keeps your donation of food for Backpack

Mission News

Are you ready to “Throw In The Towel?” October is Throw In The Towel month for Operation Reach Out! How many extra towels do we need? How many beds to we use “those” sheets on? By cleaning out your closets and filling our collection box you can help so many! Operation Reach Out uses towels and washcloths in our shower room; we help families who have been burned out or are moving into a home for this first time with towels, washcloths, bedding and blankets. All those extra things that clutter our closet are a blessing to those in our community! A collection box will be located in the breezeway and Family Life Center beginning October 1st!

With the recent flood and devastation from Hurricane Florence, many are asking “what can I do to help.” Operation Reach Out is a collection point for Buckets of Love. We are collecting 5 gallon buckets filled with needed cleaning supplies. You can access UMCOR’s list of relief items as well as the following items: Cleaning solutions, large bottles of dish detergent, scouring pads, rubber gloves, paper towels, toilet paper, cleaning rags or towels. These items may be dropped off at 1308 Miller Street, Monday thru Friday 9-2. Pastor Eric and other first response teams will be assisting in delivery of the items.

As we start preparing for our Thanksgiving Feast, we ask that you start praying for this mission event and look around your community. Are there neighbors who are lonely, shut in or without family? If you know of those in our community that we can ask to our table, please email Cara Steele at [email protected] or let the church office know.

you to know that October is Pastor

Appreciation Month.

basket in the breezeway and the FLC

lobby for cards, notes, or small token gifts

for our pastor. Thank you.

October is the month that the Nominations committee

comes together and prayerfully begins to find those who

will serve on committees. No one likes to think about

serving on a committee because it means that they have

to attend a meeting.

But serving is a way we give back and a way to continue

to grow the kingdom.

Finance- Checks and balance of our financial records,

and looks for ways to educate, and grow stewardship in

the church. Works with committees to develop a budget.

Trustees- oversee the maintenance of the facilities

Staff- Pastor-Parish- Relations – supports the pastor and

staff to develop spiritual growth, functions as the Human

Resource.

Nurture (broken down into 2 groups)

a. Family ministries- plans and organizes events

such as: church wide picnics, Heritage Sunday,

promotion Sunday, Graduation Sunday, and other

family events.

b. Children’s ministries- plans and organizes

Vacation Bible School, Easter celebration,

Halloween festival, Christmas festival.

Parsonage- Oversee the well-being of the parsonage to

see that things are kept in good working condition and

that the parsonage family needs are met.

Nominations- prayerfully discern those who desire to

serve and seek to place those in the areas that they may

use their gifts and talents.

Missions- look for ways to engage the church and those

in the church in mission work locally, nationally and

internationally.

Witness- seeks ways that the church can become a

witness within the community. Connecting people to

people.

This is a brief summary of the committees within the

church. Where do you feel that God can use you?

Dinner Circles

You may remember that in the summer, guest

speaker Rev. Laura Hamrick, delivered a thought-

provoking challenge to us to reach out to those

around us – especially those who come through

our doors at MSUMC – by practicing what she

called “Life at the Table.” As she pointed out in

her message, people are lonely, starving for

meaningful connection with others, and come

looking for this when they visit a church.

Some of us have friends and family here at the

church, but many who are drawn here to visit at

our worship services do not. We can begin to

meet this challenge with intentional hospitality:

Dinner Circles. Here’s a description of what this

might look like:

Dinner Circles are a way for people to get to

know each other by enjoying a meal in each

other's homes. Circles comprise six to nine

people, generally from four or five households.

Each household hosts a gathering, usually a

weekend dinner. The time and place depends on

the group—options include an afternoon picnic, a

Sunday brunch, or even a dessert buffet.

Generally, the host provides the main course and

beverages and assigns other parts of the meal to

other group members. There is no agenda for

these meetings. Get to know one another and

enjoy good conversation. A rotation of four or

five households lasts about six months—one

gathering per household, paced four to six weeks

apart.

A long-term member says, “What I appreciate is

the Christian fellowship: the opportunity to be

part of the church while outside the church

building—enjoying laughter in comfortable

settings, exploring interesting (and at times

provocative) topics, making new friends, and

eating great food, strengthening those ties that

bind us.”

Interested? Watch for information in the coming

weeks about how you might participate in a

Dinner Circles this year at MSUMC.

very generous gift from Lynne Wallace.

Thank you – many more hours of quilting.

To the members of Mineral Springs United

Methodist Church,

Thank you so much for thinking of our kids and

our school with your generous gifts of school

supplies. We really appreciate receiving school

supplies because our kids use these on a daily

basis.

Parkwood High School is a great school and

our children are bright and eager to learn. In

this current economy, some of our parents are

unable to provide the very basic requirements

for school.

Thanks to you, we will be able to provide

supplies to those children.

Once again, we are grateful for your donation.
