INTRODUCTION

This directory has 347 listings, representing 234 companies and individualswho produce industrial minerals in Florida and 7 companies who import

Sminerals from out-of-state. Any corrections or omissions should be brought toI the attention of the Florida Department of Natural Resources, Bureau ofSGeology for incorporation into future editions. The assistance of all producers

who cooperated, and the assistance of the U.S. Bureau of Mines is gratefullySacknowledged. The writer made a survey of the mineral industry of Florida inS1968 and received splendid cooperation from a great majority of the producers in

his efforts to compile data on the Industry. We invite the cooperation of all theproducers in order that our records may be complete. It is the belief of theBureau of Geology that an accurate annual Directory of Mineral Producers inFlorida, advantageously distributed, will not only be an item of considerablevalue to the mineral producers in the State, but will be an invaluable source of

| information to Industry in considering feasible plant locations where certainminerals are required for the manufacture of finished products.

Figures released by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, United States Department ofthe Interior indicate the value of mineral production in Florida in 1968 totaled$304.6 million, $5.2 million less than the record year of 1967, reversing theupward trend in value of production that began in 1962. In 1968, significantvalue increases in most of the mineral commodities were noted, especially those

Srelated to the building industry, which in 1968 reached a record level. The overalldecline in value of mineral production is directly attributable to an 8 percentdecrease in the value of phosphate rock, the State's most valuable mineralcommodity.

For the 75th consecutive year, Florida led the Nation in phosphate rockoutput, total marketable production increased 3 percent over that of 1967,setting a record high. Florida also ranked first in the production of fuller's earthand zircon, second in ilmenite, and was the only producer of staurolite.Nonmetals accounted for 95 percent of the State's total mineral productionvalue, compared with 94 percent in 1967. Principal nonmetals produced, listedin order of value, were phosphate rock, stone, cement, clays, and sand andgravel. Quantity and value of portland and masonry cement shipments bothincreased 14 percent and 16 percent respectively. Total clay output increased 7percent, and value 1 percent. Sand and gravel output was 7.7 million tons valuedat $7.9 million in 1968; production increased 12 percent in tonnage and 23percent in value. Total stone (all limestone) output, excluding dimensionlimestone was 36.7 million tons valued at $46.6 million, setting a record forstone output and value in 1968, as shown in figure 1. Oystershell was dredgedand crushed by five companies in five counties on State leases. Total output was

1.1 million tons valued at $1.9 million, a decrease of 15 percent in tonnage and5 percent in value below 1967. Metals accounted for only 3 percent of theState's total mineral production value. Crude petroleum production from theState's two oilfields decreased 6 percent below that of 1967. Peat productionand value increased considerably compared with 1967.

One of the largest non-commercial producers of minerals in the State is theFlorida State Road Department through its six Districts located throughout theState, but tonnage or yardage is nor recorded, so the amounts of variousminerals used in road construction is not known; however, the Third Districtestimated it used approximately 165,000 Cu. Yds. of Sand-Clay, 155,000 Cu.Yds. of Shell and 200,000 Cu. Yds. of Limerock in addition to borrow material, commercial stabilizing material and local stabilizing materials in the past year. This, multiplied by the six Districts located throughout the State will give someidea of the tremendous amounts of various minerals utilized by the State RoadDepartment each year that is not reported. Thirty-four Counties, five Cities, theU.S. Forest Service, the Seminole Indian Reservation and the U.S. SugarCompany also produce either clay, sand, gravel, limestone, shell or marl fromlands they own or lease to build or repair roads, school grounds and streets, butno record is kept of the quantities in most instances and therefore, theproduction is not reported.

This directory lists each producer under the heading of the mineralcommodity he produces. The County and approximate location of operationswithin the County are also given. The reference numbers correspond with thenumbers on the location map representing the mineral under which the produceris listed. The indexes list Counties and producers alphabetically.
