• Educators complete an application to participate, which must include education, experience and personal interests.

• BCIU selects participants and matches them with business hosts best suited by backgrounds and interests.

• Participants coordinate with assigned business hosts to set mutually agreed upon times and dates to meet.

• Participants work at the assigned company for 4 days under the direction of a business mentor.

• Participants attend the iBb seminar to share experiences.

• I indicated on my BCIU application that I love to travel.• I was assigned to White Star Tours & Travel Center, 26 East Lancaster Avenue, Reading, PA.

• June 22, 2015 ‐Met with Andrew Cammarano to get a business overview and plan activities enabling me to learn about the company’s needed job skills and required abilities so that I may better prepare my students for the workforce.

• June 22, 2015 through June 25, 2015 ‐Met all White Star Tours employees, job shadowed, and assisted in job related activities.

Necessity is the Mother of Invention• The patriarch of White Star Tours, Mr. Gus Kraras, immigrated from 

Greece in the 20’s and worked diligently, resulting in his purchase of a small hotel in Wildwood, NJ.

• Mr. Gus Kraras continued to expand and eventually owned several hotels and restaurants in Wildwood NJ, including the White Star Hotel.

• In the 1970’s, Mr. Kraras and his family discovered a way to fill those hotels and restaurants during the less busy, off‐season.

• Bus Tour Packages to Wildwood were arranged by the Kraras family primarily for seniors from the Berks County area. 

• The Tour Packages were so successful that people in nearby counties began traveling with the Kraras tours.

• Now Tour Packages are arranged with groups from all over the country and include not only Wildwood, NJ, but also, many other wonderful destinations.

• White Star creates a very detailed, timed itinerary for every traveler.• White Star sends Group Leaders itineraries, name tags, luggage tags, 

and small gifts for each traveler.• White Star communicates with Group Leaders throughout the trip to 

ensure all are enjoying every aspect of the vacation.• White Star employees answer calls 24 hours a day, 7 days a week if 

group leaders and travelers have any questions.• After the trip, group leaders are formally thanked and asked to 

complete a trip evaluation form to ensure that all travelers were happy and truly enjoyed the trip.

• White Star Tours is more than a very successful and reputable business, it is a family. I, too, was made to feel as part of that family during my internship.

Greatest Challenge and How it is being Addressed

• Keeping customers happy and coming back while continuing to expand to meet the needs and wants of the “savvy senior.”

• Anybody can book a trip by themselves using many online resources. Each of the staff members specialize in certain areas. White Star employees are experts on hotels, restaurants, and attractions so that they may arrange tours that are fun and memorable, yet remain cost effective.
