Local Mind Service Development

What’s going on in your area

Without a doubt the challenges of recent times have placed substantial pressure on already stretched resources in local Mind groups.

With a backdrop of contracts being cut, cost savings to be made and a lack of clarity about how issues such as Personalisation and Clinical Commissioning will affect the longer term there would be every reason to suspect that we may be seeing some casualties.

However it would appear that in times of adversity there is a greater tendency to come together with

those sharing the same values and keep marching together. One CEO reminded me “anything that doesn’t break us makes us strong” .

The five Cumbrian local Mind groups have been meeting regularly with a renewed vigour to find meaningful ways to harness their strengths and ensure a

sustainable Mind presence in Cumbria. Recent projects have included a Mind In Cumbria web portal and there’s more activity

This four-year, government backed programme supports organisations run by and for disabled people.

There are 12 regional ambassadors available for advice, to link groups up or to provide some expert help for your group.

Summer Grants for local Minds

The local Mind groups in Cumbria were delighted to secure some significant funding through the £1m Prevention Fund being administered by Adult Social Care to undertake various Mental Health projects across the County.

All groups had some success and there is excitement that this will act as an opportunity to showcase some of the creative and responsive ways that are the trademark of the Community Sector.

Amongst the successful projects

are a social prescribing model ‘Connect’ which is currently running as a pilot in one GP surgery and will extend to a further one.

A countywide Suicide Prevention Training programme is a further project and also included is much needed funding to offer the Coping With Life Courses which were brought from Bromley Mind via this project last year. We look forward to following how the projects are evaluated, and create evidence of success for those who use them.

This new post has been created by Tyne-side Mind to look for opportunities to secure resources to extend services into their

extended areas of benefit. Helene has been in post for only 6 months and is already making a difference. She has helped to se-cure £35,000 from the PCT to extend the counselling service into South Tyneside.

Gavin heads up our new Community Portfolio Unit, which includes Ecominds as well as the NRF Service Development Project.

‘I am very excited about supporting Cath and Pam’s work across the North. I hope that over the coming months we can leverage the benefits of a national network of Minds at a local level in Cumbria and the North East, sharing best practice, learning from each other and building better services for people experiencing mental health problems”

Gavin joins Mind from a local pro-vider background, having worked for a mental health charity in London, dealing with Issues arising from

personalisation and a reduction in

funding. Prior to that he worked for a national charity involved in sport for development, linking with five

Northern Universities, so he is no stranger to these parts.

Although not eligible to apply for GSK Impact awards because they are a pharmaceutical

company (thanks to Stuart for reminding me of this!) there is interesting information about this year’s

winners, including a Scottish organisation, Healthy Valleys

Healthy Valleys is a charity in Lanarkshire delivering a range of community led health interventions to

improve the health and well-being of the people of rural South Lanarkshire

Check out their website and annual report for

information about their current services, including the development of a new catering social enterprise.

Maybe worth a visit?
