Dominance
Dominance, such as left or right handedness, can occur between two parts of a physically living whole.
Dominance is perfectly normal and natural.
Dominance is part of the human condition, and all human beings experience its consequences everyday.

The Triune Brain
The neurologist Paul MacLean has proposed that our skull holds not one brain, but three, each representing a distinct evolutionary stratum that has formed upon the older layer before it, like an archaeological site. He calls it the "triune brain." MacLean, now the director of the Laboratory of Brain Evolution and Behaviour in Poolesville, Maryland, says that three brains operate like "three interconnected biological computers, [each] with its own special intelligence, its own subjectivity, its own sense of time and space and its own memory". He refers to these three brains as the neocortex or neo-mammalian brain, the limbic or paleo-mammalian system, and the reptilian brain, the brainstem and cerebellum (see next diagram). Each of the three brains is connected by nerves to the other two, but each seems to operate as its own brain system with distinct capacities.

A mind map or mindmap is a pictorial representation of how a central concept is linked to other concepts and issues. It is similar to a semantic network or cognitive map but there are no formal restrictions on the kinds of links used. Most often the map involves colour or monochrome images, words, and lines. The elements are arranged intuitively according to the importance of the concepts and they are organized into groupings, branches, or areas.
In other words, a mind map is a multicolored and image centered radial diagramme that represents semantic or other connections between portions of learned material. The uniform graphic formulation of the semantic structure of information on the way to gathering knowledge may help reconsolidation of memories. It is advertised as a way of increasing motivation to work on a task. For example, the map can graphically illustrate the structure of government institutions in a state. A mind map well-structured and well-established can be subject to review (e.g. with spaced repetition).

Natural Architecture
95 per cent of people experience major problems in such areas as thinking, memory, concentration,
motivation, organisation of ideas, decision-making and planning.
Here we introduce you to Radiant Thinking and Mind Mapping, demonstrating how each is a natural
offshoot of the brains fundamental structure and how each can improve dramatically your mental
performance.

Amazing Brain
It was after studying the brain cell that Sir Charles Sherrington, considered by many to be the grandfather of
neurophysiology, was moved to make the following poetic statement:
“The human brain is an enchanted loom where millions of flashing shuttles weave a dissolving pattern, always
a meaningful pattern, though never an abiding one, a shifting harmony of sub patterns. It is as if the Milky Way
entered upon some cosmic dance”
In each human brain there are an estimated one million brain cells.

Great Brains
Those considered to be “great brains” in the field of art, science, politics, literature, the military, business and
education have all used notes to help them think.
For those of you who have been criticised for making “messy notes” or “doodling” what follows in this
programme will provide consolation and vindication.

Brains in Quandary
There are inherent weaknesses of note making or taking systems currently used all over the world. By
analysing the effectiveness of various styles of note making/taking we can begin to evolve a system that
works with our brains rather than against them.
It is important, at the outset, to make a clear distinction between note making and note taking. Note making
means organising your own thoughts often in a creative, innovative way. Note taking means summarising
someone else’s thoughts as expressed in a book, article or lecture.

Radiant ThinkingRadiant thinking is a major evolutionary step in the understanding, accessing and nurturing of the human
brain.
Information processing is what happens in your brain when you taste a ripe pear, smell flowers, listen to
music, watch a stream, touch a loved one, or simply reminisce.
The answer to both is simple and amazingly complex.
Each bit of information entering your brain, every sensation, memory or thought (incorporating every word,
number, code, food, fragrance, line, colour, image, beat, note and texture) can be represented as a central
sphere from which radiate tens, hundreds, thousands, millions of hooks that information hangs on.

The Way Ahead
Defining the natural expression of radiant thinking: the Mind Map, the next evolution in human thought.
The Mind Map is an expression of radiant thinking and is therefore a natural function of the human mind, it is
a powerful graphic technique which provides a universal key to unlocking the potential of the brain. The Mind
Map can be applied to every aspect of life where improved learning and clearer thinking will enhance human
performance. The Mind Map has four essential characteristics.
A) The subject of attention is crystallised in a central image.
B) The main themes of the subject radiate from the central image as branches.
C) Branches comprise a key image or key word printed on an associated line. Topics of lesser importance are
also represented as branches attached to higher level branches.
D) The branches form a connected nodal structure.

Brainstorming Words
Brainstorming words explore in depth your brain’s radiant thinking processing system. Through a number
of brainstorming exercises you will discover the vast potential of your associative machinery as well as
gaining an insight into your own and other people’s uniqueness as individuals. Exercises will help you
with new brainstorming techniques, in particular you will gain a deeper understanding of communication
and how we can avoid misunderstanding each other.

Brainstorming Images
Here we will discuss recent brain research which has astounded experts around the world. In 1970 Scientific American magazine
published the result of a fascinating experiment carried out by Ralph Haber. Haber had shown his subjects a series of 2560 slides
representing one image once every ten seconds. It took approximately seven hours for the subjects to view all the slides, but this
viewing time was divided in separate sessions over a period of several days. An hour after the last slide had been shown the
subjects were tested for recognition. Each person was shown 2560 pairs of slides, in which one slide came from the series they
had seen while the other came from a similar set which they had not seen. On average, the accuracy of their recognition was
between 85% and 95%.
Having confirmed the unrivalled accuracy of the brain as a receiving, holding and recalling mechanism, Haber also carried out a
second experiment to check the brain’s ability to recognise its speed. In this experiment one slide was shown every second. The
results were identical, indicating that not only does the brain have an extraordinary capacity to imprint and recall, but that it can
do so, with no loss of accuracy, at incredibly high speeds.

Brainstorming to Mind Mapping
This section continues the process we have looked at previously with the happiness exercise. Moving on
from the Mini Mind Map stage, this section takes you to the threshold of full mind mapping by showing you
how to expand any mini mind map to any size you want.
Now try out a happiness mini mind map, place happiness in the centre with a circle around it and expand
using words that represent happiness to you.

Mind Mapping
This section introduces you to techniques for ordering and structuring your thinking and the “journey
through the mind of a mind mapper” enabling you to see the process of mind mapping “from the inside”.
The full power of the mind map is realised by having a central image instead of a central word and by using
an image wherever appropriate rather than words. Combining the two cortical skills of words and images
multiplies your intellectual power, especially when you create your own images.

Mind Mapping
Structure
With any concept there are general laws to be applied. This section will guide you towards being able to
increase massively your mental precision, creativity, power and freedom. Once you have understood and
absorbed the basic mind map laws you will be able to develop more rapidly your own personal mind mapping
style.
The mind map laws are intended to increase, rather than restrict, your mental freedom. In this context, it is
important not to confuse order with rigidity or freedom with chaos (remember yellow and green in brain
dominance).

Developing a Personal Style
Mind Maps provide the ideal opportunity to improve your hand/eye coordination and to develop and define
your visual skills. With a little more practice, the image-making skills you have already developed can be
used to take your mind maps into the realms of art. Such mind maps enable your brain to express its own
artistic and creative personality. In developing your own personal style it is especially useful to apply the
guiding principles or image, colour, dimensions and spacing.
