What are archives?

• Unique material

• Generated by an organisation, business or individual and preserved for long-term access

• An archive collection is identified as being created by a particular person, family, or organisation in the course of their activities

• Collections vary widely in size and content

Types of repository

Repository Type of archive material

National record office government

Local record office geographical – local businesses, estates, people, places, genealogical, diocesan, parish, maps

Universities, colleges history of the institution, researchers and research, land and buildings, local businesses, specialist areas

Specialist record office music, architecture, film, etc.

Business archive relate to the business activities – also people, land, buildings

Charity archive relate to the charity – people, land, buildings

Museum relate to their collecting area, often varied

Library relate to their collecting area, often varied
