Historical Background Short History of Faenza between end 18th cent-
beginning 19th cent
• 1797: Faenza passed from Pope rule to Napoleon’s one(until 1814). French troops arrived in Faenza in 1796 and took up residence in 1797.
• In this period many local noble families supported the new Jacobite ideals and were the new governors of the city. These families( one of them was Milzetti) built their palaces as expression of their power and importance.
• They called to work famous artists, architects, so that Faenza became an important centre of Neoclassicism in Italy.
• Palazzo Milzetti is one of the richest and most significant Neoclassical buildings in Italy as it includes architecture, decoration and furniture

Short History of Milzetti Palace
Short History of Milzetti Palace
• 1792:Count Nicola Milzetti decided to restore his palace damaged in the earthquake of 1781. He called the famous architect Giuseppe Pistocchi to renovate the façade.
• 1795: Count Nicola died. His son Francesco inherited the palace.He made fortune in the period of Napoleon rule and wanted to transform this palace into a sumptuous residence.
• 1800: Nicola called another important architect, Antonio Antolini to continue the work of the interior of the palace.
• 1802: decorations of the interior made by the famous painters Felice Giani and Gaetano Bertolani, the stucco workers Antonio Trentanove and the brothers Ballanti Graziani.
• These artists decorated all the rooms of the palace and created the furniture ( consoles, mirrors, chandeliers and doors).
• 1805 : the work was completed but it cost a lot of money. • 1808: Milzetti was forced to sell the palace because of debts.

Designed: by Antonio Antolini Function: centre of the palace for receiving guests during dances, celebrations and
banquets, symbol of the importance of Milzetti’s family. Symbols : Masonic ideas : three-part Palladian window refers to the divine triangle Illuminist ideas: the light dominant element of the room Description: Corinthian columns in the corners gives the room an octagonal shape Serlio style windows (called “Serliane”) Walls decorated with stucco bas-reliefs Umbrella-vault with the painting of Apollo riding the chariot of the sun At the base of the vault: 16 lunettes representing the 12 signs of zodiac and the 4

Apollo riding the chariot of sun description of the fresco
• Apollo on his golden chariot is wearing a red cloack moved from the wind. He holds in one hand the reins and in the other the lyre. Around his head rays light up the sky.
• In front of the chariot there are 4 excited horses and 4 winged women hug them. The women are wearing white, red, green, blue clothes. Above them another woman has a star on her head and flowers in her hands. She is the personification of the sunrise(aurora).
• Around the chariot there are many puttos : one with a torch , 2 in front of the chariot and 3 are dancing under the chariot.
• In the background: human figures with trumpets • All the scene is dynamic • Colours: darker in the external part and lighter in the internal one,
almost white around Apollo’s head.

• Milzetti Palace was decorated by Felice Giani inspired by the paintings found in Ercolano. All the rooms are decorated with stories and figures from Greek and Roman Mythology.
